Title: surnames which cause embarrassment...
Post by: Sassy on June 23, 2015, 12:14:51 AM
I have been talking to one of my brothers key workers for a few weeks now... Today, I found out he had been lying about his surname.
When I called his own office no one knew him but I found out he had not been using his true surname.

Alcock is his real surname... I think he expected us or other to take the Mick but to be honest it isn't that inportant...Why hide it, it causes confusion. Should change it, if he doesn't like it...

It is al(l) cock and bull to me.. ;D

I knew a lady who, after she got married, insisted that she no longer be called Pat and revert to her full first name of Patricia.
Why? -
She married a bloke called Hiscock!

A young lady I knew when a teen ager was christened Ophelia - not really a problem there you might think, except that her family name was Balls.

It is amazing how little thought some parents put into their choice of names.

There were a couple of names that have stuck in my memory from school, one was the surname Batty - although the chap involved coped with it very well.

The other name wasn't embarrasing as such; but a lovely, unusual name to say - Clackworthy.

I've come across a few good ones with work.

Badcock - funnily enough his wife didn't take his name.
Glasscock - you could always see him coming.
Sleigh - yes, his first name was Bob.

I worked some years back with a chap called Pratt  (two t's), which wasn't too bad in those days, but the inexplicable thing was, his parents had named him Patrick  -  Pat Pratt.  It's cruel!

Just seen this advertisement from a surgeon, who pursues something called 'minimally invasive surgery' to treat problems with the small intestine and colon(amongst others).

http://www.mastercenter-northtexas.com/

His name is Robert Sewell. I wonder if he ever signs his letters sent to his patients as R. Sewell. ;D

One name on our war memorial at school: James Parrot Seed.  Every new kid was taken to see it.

Cruel?

I don't know; maybe it is just thoughtlessness.

My ex and I nearly named our son Gareth Brian - our surname begins with an "H" - until some kind lady pointed out that his initials would be    G B H!

I often wonder how Pat felt, or feels.

That is embarrassing.  Who'd want people to think they are related to the ex shadow chancellor.

Or any politician for that matter!

Sir Thomas Beecham was rehearsing with an orchestra, and asked for the name of one of the players.

"Ball? How singular!"

A thread from the dead!
I once read of a Nazi in Hitler's inner circle with the grimly appropriate name of Major Hell.

That's correct, I had forgotten who it was, and now I remember.
