Doesn't it appear on Google searches?
-
Ah but what you don't know is that there are thousands of new members, but they belong to the secret bit of the forum only open, in posting terms, to the elite members like myself, and not to the plebs! ;D ;D
-
^^^^ that's why no one is interested in joining this forum.
-
Maybe because they see us all as a bunch of losers who keep going round in circles. :)
-
perhaps someone could write a program that posts the same old arguments again and again so that we can all go off and do something more productive?

Both my garden and my hubby would appreciate that! :)

I suppose it couldn't be god's judgment?

Simple - too many WUMs and Trolls - naming no names of course!
Mote beam eye - Thrud!
-
Some people I invited to join the forum were put off by the unpleasantness of one or two of the 'Christians'. One did actually join but left when one of the posters, in particular, really did their head in because they are so confrontational and unpleasant.
-
I suppose it couldn't be god's judgment?

Of course! I had quite forgotten that.

You're a relative newcomer but you don't appear to have been put off by that.
I guess you felt that you fitted right in.

See my post on the "lack of moderation" thread!

Your resolve didn't last long:
I shall, henceforth follow the advice that I have been given, by another poster, and treat you as if you and your posts do not exist
About 2 and a half minutes!
;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Maybe because these are not really the 'Religions & Ethics ' boards. These are 'Atheists' boards with religious people being the 'defendants'.
Some people did join I remember but were driven out by some atheists (Prof W in particular) with their aggressive and insulting responses.
-
Low blow.
Prof W isn't in residence to defend himself.
-

I agree with that alright! LOL!
-
If people are insulting other members and being aggressive to other members and this is resulting in members leaving the board isn't this something that should be addressed by the moderators?
-

Yes...of course. But they don't always do the appropriate thing. Some people here are more equal than others, I have noticed.

Why? Where has he gone? He posted recently.

OK. He isn't around much.

Maybe...but he is around alright. Check the Christians board.

Depends on their arse licking proficiency.
If you call one particular mod "my lady" you can get away with anything.

Leo is probably right.

I wonder if it is because of all this twitter stuff? On the other two forums I go to new members are few. Perhaps there is just a natural lull in forum discussion on the internet. We who got to know each other on the BBC board share a strong inclination to keep in touch with old friends, and I for one do not want to miss what good writers say, so even if there are only one or two topics that I choose to post on, I do not want to leave! It's a pity bluehillside seems to have gone?
-
Could it be anything to do with the fact that many people feel uncomfortable discussing religion regardless of their faith positions.
-
It's a pity bluehillside seems to have gone?
And after the mods went to the trouble of disabling Karma again to stop his panties from bunching too.
-
I miss the glory days when we were the subject of discussions and presentations in Welsh Working Men's clubs

Post of the week......Right on the money.

And the PoTW prize was a trip to the Bahamas.
-
I think a big reason is because it is such a nightmare ball ache to register here now. I re-registered last year and I had to go through the facebook page for them to understand that I was trying to register and that I wasn't one of the hundreds of bots they dealt with every week.

Ah yes, I remember the week we won it jointly and Senga the cocktail waitress at The Bahamas Lounge in Billericay was rushed off her feet.

You probably have a point. I reckon Gordon checks and blocks somewhere between twenty and thirty spammers a day. It's so easy to end up on a blacklist at somewhere like spamhaus - if you've ever had an opt-in mailing list on a blog for example. Sometimes we spot one that looks legit and then turns out to be a bot.

Post of the week......Right on the money.
Anybody looking in here will soon realise that there is little scope for debate: it's just atheists condemning, with little or no realistic give and take. In short the place is sterile, and all but moribund.

I regtret that what you say is, to a large extent, correct.
OK, I rarely look at the vast majority of topics, Christianity, Islam, Jewish, sports, have little or no attraction and alot of threads descend into prove it/disprove it spirals or exchanges in quote-mining.
The restricted numbers on these boards result in far too many threads becoming repeats of dozens of other threads with the same protagonists going over the same old ground.
It is a great pity that so many of the old Beeb R and E population are no longer around or contactable.
-
So..........The forum feels like '' A conversation had''?
-
The younger people are all into the various social media sites. This forum relies on older people, with little new to say. As well as that, there isn't time to be on here much if you are into Twitter, etc.
-
Could it be that in some weird way we actually enjoy each others' company?

OK.
When are you gonna leave.
So the rest of us can have a decent conversation about the fallacies between the original texts of Paulane theology, and how Mark and Matthew contradict his version of salvation and how Paul dictated Christianity to his followers as portrayed in his Greek centric letters in complete contrast to the writers of the later 'gospel'?

Your post exactly shows why nobody joins up here anymore.

Anyone else care to enlighten them??

I don't think anybody cares.

I think that the attitudes of some self-described christians on this forum differ little from those found in medieval times when heresies were being rooted out and heretics put to death. They treat atheism as some kind of heresy instead of just being a rational alternative to credulity.
Slaughter the lot. God will recognise his own.
-
It's a two way street though, HH. We have a sprinkling of atheists who greet every post from a believer with sniggers and comments about being loopy and the old imaginary friend cliche. That isn't debate, it's like spending a evening with Jimmy Carr.
-
Dear Rhiannon,
Well said ;)
On the subject of new members, can I ask how old is this forum, I can only compare it to the old Beeb, how long did it take before it had lots of members and of course the Beeb had a name which people could flock to.
Were any of our forum around in the early days of the beeb forum.
Gonnagle.
-
That's just the internet, isn't it? You are always going to get insults and back-biting.
I've noticed with other forums that they often shrink, and become reduced to a core set of members, who become familiar to each other, a kind of clique phenomenon. Maybe it's inevitable.
The Ship of Fools has a big membership, about 18, 000, but if you read it regularly, you will also find certain members crop up all the time. I used to read Rational Skepticism, which followed the demise of Dawkins' forum, and it has also shrunk to a clique, (and Dawkins' one had 60, 000 members).
Gonners is right, the Beeb attracted people because of its name.
Let's face it also - religion can become very boring.
-
This place is a bedrock of peace and decorum compared to Mumsnet.
As I said, I think we keep posting because generally we like each other. Either that or we have co-dependency issues.
-
It's not either/or!
-
:D
-
Dear Rhiannon,
I post on this forum because we have some terrific minds on here, I still have this wacky idea ( before I invade Poland ) of somehow harnessing those minds, the internet is a great medium for communication.
Gonnagle.
-
Yes, I've learned a huge amount of stuff here and still do. Not necessarily about religion, but I've been sent off to look at scientific things I didn't really have much interest in and various art and artists of all kinds I'd never heard of. I've laughed often and I've cried for more than one of our posters. And every now and then a conversation will spark up and through the bandwidth there's a real connection, and I think, wow, we get each other.

I think that religion becomes boring because opinions are so entrenched - no-one will budge an inch from "I'm right, my belief is right, and everybody else and every other belief is wrong/crap/stupid/deluded/ etc!

The Beeb religious forum had the same sort of debates as this forum, but if I remember rightly the moderation was more strict.
-
Dear Floo,
Sorry, I am asking about numbers, in the early days were number of members small, I could ask this question of Wigs, Leonard, Susan, Shaker, Bashers.
Just wondering if membership of this forum simply needs time or do we need to think about how to increase numbers.
Gonnagle.
-
At a rate of 3 new members per year this board is not replacing those who have left.
-

As one of the many who transferred across from the BBC forum I think the issue may be a lack of profile for this forum.
Because of the closure of the BBC forum we had a fairly sizeable ready made block of members so the forum could take off without any 'marketing' so to speak. But if you weren't on the old BBC forum I'm not sure how easily you might stumble across this forum. And if very few new people come across it, of course there will be very few new members.
I'm not sure if there is any way of working out whether the forum has many 'lurkers' i.e. people who just view the threads, but aren't members and don't post. My gut feeling (nothing to base this on) is probably very few regular lurkers. Of course the easiest way to increase membership and posters is to get lurkers to delurk, but this isn't going to work if there aren't any!
I am also unsure how attractive this forum would look to a random new person. As has been mentioned by others, there are lots of similar threads, and plenty of threads are actually only really interesting if you know the 'personalities' of the posters, which takes time. Otherwise I think plenty of threads might look like an old boys and girls club of people talking to other people they have known (online) for many years - a kind of 'in-joke' impenetrable to a newby.
-
It is pretty much of an clique or club here. The point of the BBC message boards is that they were effectively a "platform" where views could expressed and discussed with a wide audience. part of a national dialogue that did not exist elsewhere. I don't think a "private" forum can meet those expectations. A critical mass of participants with a wide range of information and knowledge is needed.
Eg. Take the "Muslim board" discussion. On the BBC forum there were a large numbers of Muslims present to explain, defend or just discuss Islam and Islamic precepts. In depth discussions could be had, but here the "burden" has fallen on at most a couple of members - so the discussions are bound to be repetitive and, ultimately, un-informative.
The "Eastern religions" board has fallen into disuse altogether.
-

As far as I remember there seemed to be many different posters, only a relatively small number of whom ended up on this forum. I don't think the Beeb gave the exact number of members though.
-
I would like to post something on the topic for going off topic thread, but that has been ruined by the stupid posts put in usually by Vlad or BA.

Probably because I re-activated the thread they decided to scupper it because they have nothing better to do with their sad little lives! ::)

Stupid is in the eye of the beholder.

If people are insulting other members and being aggressive to other members and this is resulting in members leaving the board isn't this something that should be addressed by the moderators?
Would that be with the wand of partial or impartiality? Or both?
I think we know interest in the internet is a dying thing...
Social media like twitter and face book take up so much of peoples time.
Personally, maybe the fact that a lot of believers were driven away means the atheists have very few people who can be bothered to answer the same old, same old.
Then again some we use to post with still post on other forums.. Including people like Andrew, Victoria Plum and Greg... :D
-
And technology moves on too.
The format of this board doesn't make it particularly accessible for those using a phone. It's barely useable on a tablet.

I was on there in the very early days, and as I recollect, there were a good many members, though there tended to be a hard-core of regular posters, some of whom eventually reached here, some via the old, original NGL, which I was also a member of. Some of those old Beeb posters found their way here, and so the athests among them are now well past the tenth anniversary of their wasted posts!! :)

Also please note I even took the trouble to spell 'Christians' correctly and even capitalise it.

Yes, Pagans go round in circles, depending, of course, which ritual they are doing, some don't need going round in circles.
-
That's right, some don't need to, those ones were born dizzy. What a bonus!
-
Why are there so few new members?
Could it possibly be that anyone from outside the forum perusing the various threads on the forum will find that thread after thread consists of the same opinions and sentiments repeated again and again and again - put simply, because there are so few posters the forum has become boring, deadly boring?
Virtually every siingle thread, regardless of the subject of the OP, winds up becoming an argy-bargy between the non-Christians and the Christians, the prove it and the prove otherwise, interminable reams of posts saying things that have been said a myriad times before.
Not only that but by reading an OP the responses from the various members can be predicted almost word for word; read an OP, think of a poster, and you can usually predict exactly what is going to be said by that poster, we know each other too well.
As I said the forum has, from lack of variety become boring, it has stagnated, and I, as much as any here, have contributed to that stagnation.
-

Same here. Our two camps are entrenched in our own ideas and cannot help but repeat ourselves.
I used to hope that silent readers would be influenced one way or the other, but I am becoming more and more convinced that there ain't no such people!
All we are doing is banging our heads on opposite sides of the same brick wall. ;D
-
I don't think the mods are accepting new members.
Or the registrations are getting lost in the system.

I don't really see it as 2 camps - it's messier than that. I post more than 50% of stuff on non religious topics and when it comes to the political threads there is every shade under the sun. Even on religion, I agree in many ways more with Jim and Gonnagle than lots of those who regard religion as an evil. If there is a poster here that I haven't had a disagreement, or indeed supported in some way, with I would be surprised.
Yes there is an issue about repetition but it is more on a set of relatively small issues, homosexuality, evolution (which I try to avoid as it's not really an argument), objective morality - but the other stuff can throw up interesting discussions. I would encourage others to set up topics that interest them - perhaps too few of us try to expand the areas of discussion.
As to getting more members, I know boards with many thousands of members and there is no real difference to the cyclical repetition in some subjects. It's, as has already been noted, about the brand and we ain't one. We are merely a small collection of waifs and strays from the BBC boards thrown together with a couple of additions, on a small raft of the interweb to bicker and cajole through cybertime. In the end I don't see anything wrong with that.

I thought we were a dysfunctional group of co-dependent nutters but there you go.

Yes, you are right, and I was referring to only the small section which is religion versus evolution. I should have made that clear.
-
Yes, you are right, and I was referring to only the small section which is religion versus evolution. I should have made that clear.
And I'm not sure that there is actually a 'religion v evolution' dichotomy. I realsie that there are those on both sides of the debate who like to make out that there is, as it helps to stabilise their particular preconceptions, but then there those in the middle for whom that dicotomy simply doesn't exist.
-
If you can't see the permanent and irreconcilable schism between a methodology based on empiricism, methodological naturalism, observation, experiment, hypothesis-testing and theory formation and one based on the polar opposite of all those, then you can't see much at all.
-

I'd agree there isn't a simple religion vs evolution split, but what is the 'middle' position?
-
Theistic evolution, I guess. Also known as having your cake and eating it too. Also known as doublethink.

Oh dear, Hope, do I have to spell it out? I was referring to those who consider evolution true and deism not true ... and vice versa, of course.
-
The repetitive nature of this forum is not unique, as some have said. If you look at an atheist forum, such as RationalSkepticism, the same topics come up again and again, and there is a noticeable drop-out of people, who presumably get bored.
It's just the internet, innit? If you want variety, Heinz. We could change the name to 'Naked Ins and Outs, Dogging, Bottoms etc'.

VP still posts on this forum under another name.
I wondered about that... But I know she would have let me know if posting here as she posts on one of my forums.
Though we post on others together too.
I guess that it would be a recent thing so to speak if here.
OR someone who has now left.
Her last post was on July 20th.
Contacted her. Just waiting for reply. Will let you know. Can you pm me the user name here. thanks Looked through members list seen nothing for that date.
Keturah isn't Victoria and she last posted 23 rd July so not sure who it can be.

I don't think the mods are accepting new members.
Or the registrations are getting lost in the system.
A friend of mine applied ages ago but nothing ever came of it.
Moderator:
Tell them to apply again Julie, and PM me with the Username they intend to use and I'll look out for it.
On an average day we get registrations from between 60 - 80 spammers (sometimes more) that we have to wade through, so it is possible that we could have missed a genuine one.
How do you tell that an applicant is a spammer? Perhaps your methods are too prejudice and exclude genuine newcomers.

Several points here.
1. The Forum software has functions that check for 'duplicates' in the new registrations, and these are always spammers (you can only have a designated e-mail account per registration). Today, for example I have rejected several applications from 'SPEEDAMER' with different e-mail addresses, and I see another waiting already.
2. We use utilities that allow IP and e-mail details in applications to be checked against those used by known spammers. This takes time every day, although there are some that are 'regulars' and can just be rejected.
3. There are obvious clues in the usernames and e-mail addresses submitted, where certain variations are likely spammers - many originate from Moldova and Ukraine.
4. There is the sheer volume - today I have already checked and rejected over 30 spammer registrations, as I look right now there are 22 waiting to be checked, and once I clear those I'd say at least another 25-30 will be submitted this evening. Most mornings when I check there are at least 15-20 to start the day with.
It takes time each and every day to keep on top of spammers, and is one aspect of keeping the place going that members don't ever see - and since you rarely see these spammers actually getting through and posting their invitations to porn sites or interesting Russian clothing I'd say we are on top of the situation.
Given this volume it is possible we could reject a genuine application - so if you have encouraged someone to join please let us know something via PM (say the e-mail address they will use) and we'll look out for it amongst the constant stream of spammers.

Bloody hell, I didn't realise this. When you say you check them do you mean a programme does; couldn't all this be automated in some way. Some sites you have to reproduce some muddles letters and numbers, if you want to join some site, to check you're not a machine.

Christ, that's a lot of (potential) spammers :o

I know - shocking isn't it.
To do it properly they need to be checked individually using one of the spam-checker utilities (I mostly use 'Stop Forum Spam'). There are some that can quickly be rejected (for example, those using the names 'Andrew' and 'Robert' are invariably spammers). The Forum software doesn't have the anti-bot handing (where you have to enter something to prove you ar there), so checking is required.
As I say some can be quickly rejected (even that requires flagging them for rejection) but others need to be checked.

I haven't either. It's very confusing. I usually look at the signatures etc. to gauge who it might be or the number of times they have posted. They should be forced to put a WAKA.... so people can keep track.
