Lammas has been going for a while here - the first cereal was cut a week or so back. :)

It corresponds to the Celtic pagan festival of Lughnasadh. Whether Lammas evolved out of the earlier festival, who knows, but it seems Lammas is one of those festivals where folk religion blurred the lines between the old pagan ways and Christian ideas. No doubt the church found it expedient to do so.

You don't know what you are talking about. Christianity is about 150 yrs old among the plains Cree. No, we had that real paganism thingy going on. We lived in a constant state of fear and hate and superstition and warfare until the message of Jesus came and the Mounties forced us to end our killing the Blackfoot, the Bloods, the Peigans, the Crow, and those nasty Sioux.
The only Christian heritage I can claim is from the church my father brought me to when he and mom took me in.

Not sure about this thread.
I mean, ok, yes "Lammas" has a Christian etymology. And Christmas trees have a pagan origin (it seems). So what? And Thrud with your fairy joke posted twice because it didn't get a laugh the first time.
I mean.. really?
Can't someone of a certain faith tradition say "Happy Lammas" or "Happy anything" to his fellow travellers without jibing and pisstaking getting thrown in?
Don't get me wrong, there's a place for jibing and pisstaking - we all do it, Matt no less than anyone else - but I'm just not sure this was the right place. Seems a bit ungracious. Not sure, but it just feels wrong to me.
