Hi everyone,
Many people in the US are now celebrating Indigenous Peoples Day instead of Christopher Columbus Day (Monday).
http://us.cnn.com/2015/10/09/living/columbus-day-feat/index.html
*****************************
This Monday, instead of celebrating Christopher Columbus, some cities and schools are honoring the people he encountered in the New World and their descendents.
More jurisdictions this year are recognizing the second Monday in October as Indigenous People's Day, building on efforts to shift the holiday's focus away from the Italian explorer without officially replacing it on the calendar.
Either way, supporters of the resolution are satisfied with the symbolic nature of the occasion. For them, it's an acknowledgment not only of Native American history but also modern indigenous culture.
"This (resolution) not only represents that we have been here for 10,000 years or longer ... more importantly it recognizes that we are still here and that we are alive," Arlene Kashata, a Traverse City resident and member of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians, told the Traverse City Record-Eagle. "That we are a culture that is giving and contributing to this community."
******************************
Good idea!
Cheers.

Again with the thinly veiled insult to the West!
You really don't give up do you.
Ans, by the way - honoring should be spelt honoUring.

The arrival of the Spanish is nothing to celebrate. And if matty knew any history he would see that. Here is a fella that blows a fuse because some stupid kids picked up some bits of whatever at an old concentration camp yet appears to give a pass to the slaughter and genocide done to first people of the Americas at the hands of Spain. One good thing came from the Spanish, they brought us the domesticated horse. It was a real buzz kill hunting buffalo on our hand and knees. And about Columbus, actually the Vikings were in Newfoundland long before Columbus got to this side of the world. I would not care to live anywhere in the former Spanish Americas from Mexico south. It's a mess.

A lot of Americans now think Columbus Day is an embarrassment that should be done away with. Apart from the disaster for the natives, he didn't even discover the bit of America they live in.

Wasn't there two migrations of people over the Bering Straights, or land bridge before the, sort of miss named, indians actually settled so even the, so called indian, natives actually entered the Americas as Chinese immigrants?
According to mitochondrial research and this would equally apply to the Canadian native population, so before they emigrated to the Americas they would probably of started their practice of chopping things down on Bamboo.

Just exactly what have you got against people using Google yo check facts before they post?
I know you have no need of it because the only sources of information you use are the bible, the rubbish spouted by other christians and what you perceive as witty insults, but some here do like to know that what they post has its basis in fact not imagination or fiction.

Tony has all the "information" he needs programmed into him by the Bible. He's not the least bit interested in facts.

A lot of people of lots of nationalities now think, mainly as a result of the various candidates for the US presidency, that the entire US is an embarrassment.

Obama is the most intelligent president the US has had for many years ... I feel sorry for anybody trying to replace him.

I feel sorry for the entire nation if they elect ether Trump or Bush! I also fear for the survival of humanity.
I can just imagine either of these two moving into the Oval Office and the first thing they do is press the big red button with the words "I wonder what this does?

Yes I did Google, having known about the Chinese connection but how many of us would know how to spell, mitochondrial, without looking it up?
I'm, if not the worlds worst speller I wouldn't be far from the bottom of the list, I'm 73 now and it has never changed, never varied, sometimes I can't even get near enough for spell check to help, sometimes where obviously I know the first letter of a word I have to get the dictionary and a piece of card and go through the lot from the start until I get the word I'm looking for It's that bad.
So if anyone looks at my posts, be amazed at how few spelling mistakes there are in my scribbling, rather than being amazed at the odd howler I make from time to time, of which I will always unfortunately continue to do.

Knowing your facts puts him at a disadvantage and sometimes makes him look like an idiot. It's just not fair.

Sorry ippy - my comment about googling was addressed to BA who seems to clasify using google as being as deadly a sin as incest and antitheism.

Could you be wrong about the existence of your God?
Could you admit that you are wrong and that there is no god?

Oh, you've got that template out again! What's your problem? I don't answer at your behest to anything. As I've tried to get across in my recent post, you people are vile in your attempts to undermine the beliefs of theists - it's odd, and very, very unpleasant. So, take a hike.

Try giving your own opinions, rather than pick the brains of others. But then, I suppose, when your brain is inadequate, you have no choice.

So you admit you dare not answer this s simple question.
You must never again suggest that others are not open to changing their mind as some sort it f rebuke, when you yourself have a of of fixed closed mind.

This is at least the third time you have employed this very odd line of questioning. I answered it the first time, and I have no intention of going along again with your puerile attempts to score points. Go to bed, it's very late for someone your age. Anyway, your inane question is totally off topic. Do you understand that? :)

I am glad that the indigenous 'Indians' are now being given their due place in America. I am not sure about Australia and its indigenous people. The world has been Europe centric and dominated by Europeans for too long.....although this domination has probably resulted in the unification of the world. That's probably God's plan ( :D).
