Is it a love poem, a ceremonial piece, or should it be read as an allegory for the relationship between Christ and the Church?

You've missed out the idea that it is an allegory for the relationship between God and the Chosen People - Israel.

Rose, that link takes us to a Greek New Testament listing!!  It's worth noting that the Lord was displeased with his behaving in this way.  See 1 Kings 11: 9ff
