Unless they have dementia it is their choice, so leave them to it.

Is there a point you should take away a parents rights if they are in their right mind to know what they want?
I hae underlined what I believe to be the relevant point of the O.  If someone is in their right mind, then they should not be being forced to change, however old they are - especially if good neighbours are watching out for them.

Just because a person is old doesn't mean that they have lost their marbles, some have of course. My Father had all of his right until the day he died, whereas my Mother had been gradually losing it for quite a while.

In the case of my Father he made all his own decisions, like checking himself into a nursing home to get away from Mother as she was driving him completely nuts. My siblings and I insisted our mother went into a home when it became quite clear she wasn't looking after herself properly. We ensured she went into an excellent one that provided for all her needs. She didn't wish to go into the home, but as we owned her apartment she had no option. I threatened to petition the court to certify her if she didn't go in voluntarily, of course she never forgave me for that but no matter, at least it relieved  my poor youngest sister of having to look out for her. If all that sounds mean I don't apologise for my feelings for Mother there was no love lost between us that is for sure, good job it never bothered me as I was used to it.

Well, for once we agree.
