And I thought the CofE moved slowly.

The only thing the story finally proves is that the Pope really does wear a big hat.

I must admit I didn't know there was a big problem. Of course I know some of the history, schism and all that, but there doesn't appear to have been much of a problem that I know of. The Orthodox people I've met on forums believe they were the originals! Like any others, they differ between themselves - Russian, Greek, Eastern. The Russians believe the Russian royal family, Romanovs, are saints and venerate them.
At my old school, which was Catholic, some Orthodox clergy came and said Mass in the chapel. It was after my time but I was told about it and everyone was enthralled with the drama, quite a change from the usual Catholic 20mins-half an hour do! Catholics are taught that they may receive the sacraments at an Orthodox church - but I was told quite firmly, on forums, that Orthodox may not be very happy about that! So the way I see it, Catholics respect Orthodoxy and the Orthodox consider Catholics to be a sawn off second rate version :D. All seems silly to me but I don't practice anything.
Sorry if all this, or some of it, has been said but I couldn't open the link.

I don't know about the orthodox lot, but the Catholic church wants to spend its time getting rid of the paedophile priest problem it has had for so long!
-
There is no reconciliation. That can only happen once Rome completely and utterly repents of all its errors. First Rome must confess the orthodox faith.
-
It was nice to see the fancy dress. I fear the eastern guy overdid it a bit and the Pope was a tad insipid.

Come on, Gonners, you can see as well as anybody else what a farcical parade of finery these religious moguls wear, just to impress and maintain the gullible in awe.

Building bridges and extending the hand of friendship as ever, ad_o ... ::)

Oh my, our resident Christianity hater is calling out a Christian on bridge building. Only a fool would walk across a bridge he's built.

I gather that architects and engineers do it regularly.

You know ad-o thinks you've been led astray by the devil?

You know ad-o thinks you've been led astray by the devil?
He seems to think that of anybody who isn't ad_o, frankly.
-

I strongly doubt that ad-o thought of it himself ... he's just parroting what he's been fooled into believing. :)

Dialogue is fine but at the end of the day there are serious isdues thst need to be resolved first. Rome needs to repent of its errors first. The Patriarch will have made it clear as well. Rome doesn't even confess the same creed. How can there ve communion if they do not even confess the same faith?

No hope for the likes of you. Really no hope at all.
That phrase about two bald men squabbling over a comb springs to mind.
Still, while sentient creatures (humans amongst them) suffer horrifically, and millions go without food decent or un-decent, and little kiddies don't have clean water to drink without cholera-laden human shit in it, and families scrape together an existence scrabbling through the giant trash hills of Indian cities, you can worry yourself to sleep about whether the Father proceeds from the Son or the Son proceeds from the Father and other really, really, really important stuff about whether the church you used to think a couple of years ago was the final, absolute and unchangeable truth of God's revelation to humanity or whether the other church that claims exactly the same is this month, and consider it a good day of your life well spent. It's nice to be happy.

"Wants to" or "needs to?" I fail to see what your statement, said in your axiomatical way, has to do with the reconciliation of Catholicism and Orthodoxy, floo.
-

Needs to.
The wanting seems to be somewhat lacking.

You do realise this makes as much sense as arguing over the number of angels that can dance on a pinhead?

Not the same at all.

Not the same at all.
I didn't say they were the same. I said that they make as much sense. One argument got left in the Middle Ages where it belongs and the other didn't, but should have.
-
Not the same at all.
Explain why not.

Gosh...If the Pope can shake hands with the archipatriperson then perhaps the day isn't far away when I can open my big loving arms to a certain distinguished freethinking ethologist and give him the biggest Kiss..........Not you Shaker, your not my type.

Not that I'm an ethologist, but thank goodness for that.

Just heard that Richard Dawkins is unwell after taking a stroke I believe.
Genuinely sorry to hear that.

Interesting that Frank chooses Cyril, rather than Bart, presumably because Cyril is seen as the one who holds the real power.
I cannot see there being any full reunion, for all sorts of reasons, both of faith, and political. There is for example no Orthodox concept of purgatory. Also the various other Orthodox churches are independent of Roosia, they don't have to do what Cyril tells them to, just as they did not have to do what Rome told them to in 1054. Still, as Churchill said, jaw jaw is better than war war.

Because assigning two sources to the Godhead is essentially the same as saying there is two Gods. It's a major heresy. There is only one source of the Godhead, the Father, from whom the Son is eternally begotten and the Holy Spirit proceeds.
Then there is the role of the bishop of Rome as defined by the First Vatican Council, who is a tyrant.

So your dogma is the 'truth'? ;D

He believes it to be - people generally don't say "I believe X , but X is false."
However, a belief is all it is, of course. And as we know, subject to change at any moment ;)

Why can't people acknowledge that however much they believe something to be true, it is only a belief if there is no evidence to back it up?
I firmly believe that the Biblical deity is a human invention. However, I acknowledge there is a very remote chance it could exist! :o

It makes some people very very uneasy, for some reason. To acknowledge that something is a belief is to open door just a crack to the possibiity of being mistaken, and in religion that really doesn't go over at all well, usually. Believers such as Owlswing who freely admit that their beliefs are simply that have not been tremendously well represented in history. Arrogating to yourself the right to censor, persecute, torture and kill others for having different beliefs to your own is to claim infallibility - it's to claim possession of the absolute truth.
-
Mmmm we all participate in decisions which are only opinion, i.e. morals where we talk about truths, and in terms of social norms we are forced to act as if we believe things are truths. To be honest, I see a lot of the use or misuse of agnostic language to be a sort of learned sop to avoid a burden of proof.
On an intellectual level, I accept the possibilities of many things I have no belief in, but in a day to day approach, and use of language, I approach them as truths.
-
Oh Rhi, as a moderator you should not attempt to stir things up between posters. Of course an Orthodox, a Roman Catholic, and a Baptist, agree that each has been led astray and we also can agree on the main and most vital areas of the Gospel.

That is something with which I concur and would go further because sometimes evidence can be disproved or different evidence produced (it's not always worth getting into a tizz about it). However there will always be some who are intransigent in their beliefs and we might as well save our breath.

Floo,
That is a hilarious question coming from you. With your talent for porky pies and all.
British pork is the best!

Unfortunately those are the ones that need our help and are difficult to ignore.
