Hi everyone,
Here is a shocking news report about the thousands of aboriginal women killed in Canada.....and their bodies dumped in the Red river. See the special report also.
http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-35590442
*************
The Canadian government has confirmed that the number of missing or murdered indigenous women in the country may be higher than the previously cited 1,200.
Ministers recently spoke to survivors across Canada to begin a government inquiry into the matter.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made a key campaign pledge to address this.
Canada's minister for the status of women suggested on Tuesday the accurate number of missing and murdered women could be as high as 4,000.
The ministers aim for the inquiry to "examine the causes of violence against Indigenous women and girls and leads to recommendations for concrete actions to prevent future violence", said Ms Bennett.

In the sparsely populated, rich and 'developed' world??!! >:(
Cheers.

No, not the rich and developed world.
This is happening to a section of society that is poor and vunerable.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-32228123
Unfortunately human nature doesn't change because some people in a society are relatively well off.
It's a mistake to think abuse violence etc goes away with wealth.
It obviously doesn't.
Plus we don't know which section of Canadian society is preying on them.
Johnny Canoe might be able to shed more light on it, when he sees your OP

Yes....I am sure JC will have lots to say...if he doesn't go off at a tangent about India, caste and so on. :D
What I am surprised about is that there are still such differences as indigenous people and the others. This is also true in the US where American Indians still live in 'reservations' and are known by tribal names.
I agree I don't know much about all this.... but at a time when relatively recent arrivals like blacks, hispanics and others are part of the mainstream, why aren't the 'American Indians'?
Why are they still known as 'indigenous people'?
-
In Canada the original people are known as the ''First Nations'', something they wanted (at the time), the idea being to give them status and, of course, some have been very successful in Canadian politics. However that doesn't stop many people from being prejudiced against them, exploiting and abusing them. The BBC report is quite awful, if 'non-FirstNation' women had gone missing there would have been far more of a hoohah and no stone unturned in the investigations.
The Native Americans in the USA get a raw deal, always have. As do the tribal people (known as Aboriginals) in Australia, some of the stories of children being taken from their mothers and given to white people for adoption are horrendous. There was little respect for their ancient customs and culture.
All makes me quite depressed.

Not to worry I will not go on about the treatment of women in your country Sriram.
But let's not be misleading. Thousands of women HAVE NOT been killed and their bodies dumped into the Red River. Yes thousands have been murdered and or gone missing. Over the decades, I would say since the white settling into the Prairies, my ancestors being moved onto reservations and Metis settlements, women have been more victimized than ever. I will start with how my kin, the Cree, and our main enemy, the Blackfoot confederacy, viewed women. Women were possessions to be sold, traded, beaten, shared and so on. When the white whiskey traders showed up out here, many a Cree iskwew was traded by their husbands for booze.
So we couldn't adjust and still haven't, to the modern ways. We were fighters and hunters. I have a video that I show of some Cree fellas going around the Samson Cree nation showing all the burnt out, government paid for homes. This reservation I have spent time on. It is how the video portrays it. Gang violence and murders, sexual abuse, drug abuse, all is contributing to the plight of native women on and off reserve. Most murders and deaths are at the hands of the native men. Did you realize that until very recently a native woman had zero matrimonial property rights. The government changed this and the first nation chiefs fought against this change of giving women equality.
I am afraid that this royal commission is going to ignore the truth and give the native men a pass. I believe this commission will be focused on blaming the Royal Canadian Mounted police, the government, and will be a weapon to demand more money with no accountability on how it is used by chiefs and councils.
There is blame to go to the police for not treating the disappearances and murder investigations as seriously as they would for a girl or lady from the suburbs of Calgary. There is a historical blame to the Brits, and French and then Canadian government for how they treated and dealt with my kin. BUT nothing will stop this if we don't look at the behaviour and abuse at the hands of us aboriginal men. What good will come of it if all that happens is the whites get the blame and the native men are passed over due to political correctness?
Many aboriginal women that leave the reservations and Metis settlements find themselves at the mercy of the hard drinking and drug abusing white scum in the cities. And they have been murdered by this scum. But the truth is most have been murdered and gone missing by the hands of native men.
I was enraged at the government and aboriginal agenda about 12 yrs ago. I got a phone call, it was a first nation employee of the federal government. The purpose of his call was that he had access to my adoption records and he spent an hour trying to persuade me that most likely, I was removed by force and not given up for adoption. There is no proof of this. I know my real name, I know about my Cree birth mom and her large family. All I know of my birth father was that he is French. I mean what the hell was that about. Why the federal government felt it had to try and turn my world upside down is beyond me. Well they didn't convince me and it would be a mistake on their part to ever try that again with me.

We were colonized by Europe, India was not. Keeping our identity is a must but it is a mess, how we have done that. We have become dependents of the government and have lost our self respect. There are successful aboriginal people and businesses but they are a tiny minority. We have a, you promised to take care of us, so hand over the money and bugger off, mentality.
Oh and I might add you are very late to the rodeo Sriram. This is not news here, (the treatment of aboriginal women, disappearance and murders) we have known this for decades.
So who the heck am I? A first generation Metis of Cree/French blood.

Tina Fontaine was an young native girl who was murdered by the scum I mentioned earlier. She was the one dumped into the Red River, not thousands.

OMW, was it necessary to say to Sriram "Not to worry....'' etc. He didn't post the op with any arrogance or to invite comparisons, he did so because he thought we might find it interesting. I have no idea what country he comes from and it is irrelevant.
Other than that, your posts are quite interesting.

Anything done of the nature described in the OP is obviously wrong, wrong, wrong, it's something only time will heal, let's hope we can all work together in the future because after all we are all related to each other, if you go back far enough.
The only thing that might trouble you Woody is that most Europeans are far better looking than the Crees and the fact you tell us that your natural father was French must be a help when you look into the mirror.
Seriously we have all done terrible things to each other at various times in all of our histories and these things in the end shouldn't be forgotten but at least forgiven, I thought Nelson Mandela and Gandhi set the model for the best results all round.

Brownie,
Yes it was right that I wrote, not to worry. Sriram mentioned that I might point a finger at India. So I stuck to what he brought up and gave my thoughts as a Metis. If you don't like the way I went about it, cry me a river.
Ippy,
Really, you think Europeans are better looking? You're a mess of a human being. And you didn't seem to get that there is plenty of blame to go around and I fear that this investigation will give the aboriginal men a pass. What was done in the passed is passed. The aboriginal communities will get nowhere if they remain dependent on the government. Now try and grow up ippy.

Interesting but sad OP, Sriram.

Thank you for such an interesting and insightful post. It's not often you'll see someone criticise their own people, in such a manner.

Thanks JC (I find it difficult to keep up with all the changes in User ID that some of you keep making).
The customs and lifestyles of the indigenous people is one thing....but the fact that they have not been integrated into the mainstream after all these centuries is what I find surprising.
After all, the total population of Canada even today is only around 35 million (that's just two cities in India...Mumbai and Kolkata). Its half of British population and it is a rich country with plenty of land and other resources. How can it be that these people are still on the fringes?
Same goes for the Native Americans in the US.
PS: What do you mean India was not colonized by Europe/UK? The East India Company...300 years of colonization....the Jewel in the Crown.....Gandhi....Indian freedom struggle....1947.....remember?!
-
Brownie,
JC (and some others too) has a history of going off at a tangent about India and its social problems every time I mention some social problem in the west. :D I like to rib him about that.
But he is a nice chap normally and I can hold a conversation with him without feeling as though I have walked into a garbage heap (which is more than I can say about some of the others).

Thanks Sriram and OMW. All in the past and I will keep schtum where I don't understand the dynamics of relationships on this forum.

What he said was
"The only thing that might trouble you Woody is that most Europeans are far better looking than the Crees and the fact you tell us that your natural father was ......."
He only said most Europeans are better looking........ The Cree didn't get the most, the Cree were all lumped together as unattractive.
They were just the Crees.

It's two way traffic Rose, he can hand it out so what does he expect, it wouldn't be my fault if he was ugly, at least having a European ancestor is a help, somebody has to tell him.
I can't think poor old Woody is deeply hurt, sitting in a dark corner crying his eyes out, he'll be there outside in a one of those Canadian forests somewhere in his check shirt with his plaid braces holding his big chopper in both hands so watch out Rose.

It might be a good idea Woody to put Rose's mind to rest, she seems to have been struck dumb. (The correct and English meaning of the word dumb, Woody, not the American misuse of that word).
