I hope not, what do you think?
-
What a little ray of sunshine you are and no mistake! :o This forum is one of the better ones on the net and hopefully the activity will pick up.
-
Bearing in mind that we were originally on the BBC board for years, I think we are all a little more durable than you think, Walter!

I agree. This forum still has a reasonable turnover even if it is not as busy as it once was. However, another forum on which many of us have posted in the past does appear to have had its day.
-
I think that some recent moderating decisions - of which I make no criticism or comment and have no opinion - may have altered the balance of activity on this forum.

Good morning each , yes I too was on the BBC board for many years but when you look who's active , the numbers don't look good I think .
And because of my lifestyle I don't always have an internet connection, preventing me from participating as often as I might(which some of you may be happy about). Ill be here for a few days I think :P

Don't panic, I'm reasonably house trained Floo. :-*

To be fair to the board, this type of post has been appearing for three or so years. However, essentially you are right, it is and will decline, the messageboards are going out all over the internet. The larger ones will continue for sometime but this was always relatively small. At some stage it will become too quiet to continue, when I suggest we hold a small wake and say farewell to the ripples of opinion that have created it. It will have had the good innings but it will cease to be. Dust to dust, the bytes bit the dust.

I think you are right about a good forum closing once its sell by date has passed. It is so sad, imo, when a once lively forum stays open after it has been abandoned by most of the members and there is only a post once in a blue moon, like a couple of forums I can think of.

To be fair your uncalled-for unfounded argumentative reply style does not help in many cases and may put off some people from even bothering .

I think so that it goes with a bang we will at an appropriate point institute a daily capricious Ban of the Day determined by Gordon of the poster who has most annoyed him that day, this to continue until only Gordon is left at which point he virtually self immolates and bans himself.

Maybe we should run a book on which poster it will be that day! ;D

Hark, everyone, the spirit of Oscar Wilde has decided to visit the forum in the guise of the avatar, Walter! Let us prepare for a veritable cornucopic feast of sharp insights and original repartee!

to be honest Floo I read the board for about a year before joining with a specific goal in mind . that was achieved last month .

I've walked away from interesting debate on here because pedantry and point scoring has stifled what was a good discussion. It has got to the point where I tend not to bother so much. Increasingly this seems to be a place where we keep in touch with each other rather than discuss religion and ethics.
-
For my part, it'd be good if some honest to goodness theists joined who could set out plainly and cogently their arguments for others to discuss. I can't tell whether the theists who have joined have just been unable to do that, or whether theism itself really is devoid of content. Way back when (possibly on the old BBC Board) there was a a catholic priest called Father Patrick who made a good stab at it, but since then it's been pretty thin gruel.
Maybe someone could put up a postcard with this mb's address in their local theology college or something?

Mmm I think there is a problem that as ekim points out frequently that a rational and logical approach to theism, in general, is always going to he a bit of a false flag. When other Alan, Alien, was posting regularly the thing that I struggled to believe was that the flakey five were anything other than post hoc rationalizations for stuff that he believed because of personal experience. Again as I was mentioning elsewhere I think Hope was right that we tend to talk past each other on this. At least that is for the true for you theists. The true for me theists are effectively no different from you except that they might provide detail of what they believe and what experience lead them to that.
That shouldn't preclude discussion on other matters, though if someone cites holy writ on an ethical question, we are back to the different ideas of what is valid.
-
Sadly some of the more extreme theists who used to post on the forum brought the faith into disrepute with their unpleasant bigotry, especially towards gays. Some of them just loved to condemn all those who didn't see it their way to hell, which was horrible! >:( In the past I have invited a few people, including a theist, to join the forum but they were put off by those posters. Of course not all theist posters on R&E are of that ilk, but it is the ghastly ones who make the running, unfortunately. Many of them have been banned because of their behaviour, but the damage is done, I suspect.

honest to goodness theists , isn't that an oxymoron?

Maybe we could think of ideas to make the forum more appealing so people are desperate to join us. One idea of mine, having posted on forums for the over 50s, is that we have a special board for us ancient ones to air topics particularly applicable to our stage of life, just a thought.

effectively this is a special board of the over 50s. While there are a couple of young whippersnappers, we are look the junior branch of the local Tory party in age.

I think people have given up trying to have meaningful conversations with "theists" about anything, they just put their fingers in their ears and shout loudly "la la la".
I think theists too have given up talking to non theists, after all when did you last see anyone with a Jesus Saves sandwich board on a street corner or have one knock at your door unbidden.
It is a shame perhaps but these two tribes have no point of contact for meaning full conversation.
The only people I know who ever go to church do so only under pressure to attend weddings, funerals, etc. And then only for social reasons.
And as for Islam no - one discusses anything connected with belief with them out of fear of reprisal.
A shame maybe? buts that's the way it is heading.
Any attempt at compromise is pointless and doomed to failure.

Not all theists are pushy and opinionated. My three girls are moderate in their views, and definitely not Biblical literalists.
-
Floo
Ah yes but have you ever asked them to provide you with sensible evidence for the existence of God, Heaven, the power of prayer. Let alone more complicated things like why didn't God give his message to Aboriginal Australians etc.
-

It is not a topic we discuss, which is fair enough.

Ditto as regards my theist friends, relations and work colleagues. The idea that i am or should avoid people because they are theist just seems odd.
-
What evidence is available that would satisfy someone who does not believe? I've not heard any and wouldn't bother trying to convince someone else.
(john: "I think people have given up trying to have meaningful conversations with "theists" about anything, they just put their fingers in their ears and shout loudly "la la la"."
Quite.)
Doestn't stop religions ðics being interesting to talk and learn about.
Maybe God did give message to aboriginal Australians, they have their own beliefs and spirituality.
-
You see that is the sort of reply that makes discussion pointless.
"Maybe God did give message to aboriginal Australians, they have their own beliefs and spirituality."
Before Christian settlers arrived in Australia to what extent did the beliefs and practices of the Aborigine's resemble in anyway the message God gave to "the chosen people"?
You haven't thought it through, have you?

In which case following The Bible's teachings is pointless.

On the contrary I've thought it through quite deeply.
No I do not believe the faith of the Aborigines resembles the message from God to his 'chosen'. Nor do I believe that their faith is less valid,to them, for that. A pity early Christian missionaries did not have more respect for the beliefs of indigenous populations. Apart from religion, so much ancient culture was suppressed and obliterated all over the world. You don't have to be religious yourself to see that. actions performed in the name of Christianity has a lot to answer for in my opinion.

Me, I don't believe in it so the You is specious. As to the question perhaps the message is adaptive and the teachings are too based on their times. You seem to want to have an assumption of absolutism here, and while some Christians might agree with that, some wouldn't. Now you might argue that a god would be able to get everyone to think the same but then what's the point.
At base, though the issue is that you seen to want to ghettoise the religious as people not like you. That seems simply odd to me, and a tiny bit dangerous.

I think it's a consequence of being human. If you think you don't think sloppily, that be the first evidence you were.

I'm a scholar in Aboriginal beliefs and culture (I spent 23 minutes in the dedicated section of the museum of Brisbane last year ) and they are obviously far more deluded than any Christian I've met.
you can take that to the bank :o

For what? Their beliefs sustained them for long enough before the CHristians came and I've not heard they tried to force them on the invaders. It's not our business to mess with the faith of others or ridicule it,it has to grow, change and/or wither in its own way.
When I made Battenberg the colours ran.
Looks like the forum isn't quite on its last legs after all.

Disagree about not our business to less with the faith of others. Ifbsomeone wants to mistreat women or gays because of their faith, it is exactly my business. As to ridicule, why is faith an excuse to evade ridicule?

Hi Robinson,
There s the things like 'just' and 'unjust' and if something falls short of Gods standards then others will suffer because the world is made that way.
But in all God being real for the believers is not the same for the atheists.
We cannot live together as equals because atheism makes it impossible. I once had someone try to ridicule me and even speak at me in real life as if he was talking as God. What I noted was the real anxiety and the fact they were oblivious to their own disdain for God reflecting the attack onto myself. As human beings atheist reflect their own disdain about God onto anyone who believes in him, Whilst believers have to turn the other cheek and watch in silence as the atheist become all the things they accuse God of being.
We who are believers accept the world is a fallen world made so by Satan. They sometimes refuse to learn what the importance of God existing real means.
-

My Dad loved Batternberg, it was one of his favourite cakes, I am not keen on it.

Depends what you want to ridicule. I think it bad form to belittle the eucharist, at least in public, but will ridicule the way that normal human beings get divided into sheep and goats as to who can receive it.

Robbinson
I shall ridicule whomever I wish (as long as I'm out of arms length)
and as far as Battenberg production is concerned , the running of the colour is secondary to the taste , to a blind person .

"The very thing that is now called the Christian religion was not wanting amongst the ancients from the beginning of the human race, until Christ came in flesh, after which, the true religion, which already existed, began to be called Christian".
St. Augustine. He later retracted it.

I would challenge anyone who uses their religion as an excuse to oppress others, otherwise I respect the fact that we are free to choose to believe or not believe. Iappreciate the diversity of this world & hope I'm sensitive to others, wouldn't take the micky if they were unable to reciprocate.

No, I understand that the Eucharist isn't an idea to Christians, it is a sacrament representing an act of love and sacrifice. I do challenge the idea that the sacrifice was ever necessary and the associated ideas that come with that, but not the act itself. Belittling the most revered of the sacraments strikes me as being counterproductive as well as disrespectful. If you want to be heard, don't make your audience mad by shitting on what they love first.

And if you want to challenge authority, don't bow your head to it. Yes, it depends on your audience but why dishonestly misrepresent what you think? Should I not ridicule FGM, how about witch burning, I mean people thought that was really important?

As human beings atheist reflect their own disdain about God onto anyone who believes in him, Whilst believers have to turn the other cheek and watch in silence as the atheist become all the things they accuse God of being.
We who are believers accept the world is a fallen world made so by Satan. They sometimes refuse to learn what the importance of God existing real means.
If the deeds attributed to the Biblical god were true, it deserves disdain BIG TIME!

I don't want answers , why cant you just listen for a change instead of storming off to your precious pub . you think more of the pub than you do of me ,don't you ?
me, me, me, with you isn't it? I have needs, but we just ignore them!

I think that some recent moderating decisions - of which I make no criticism or comment and have no opinion - may have altered the balance of activity on this forum.
Yes I agree.
The question is, how do we either get those posters back or find new members with interesting POV to replace them?
-
Tell me more! have I missed something? :o
We no longer have Johnny canoe (pow wow), hope, brownie ......... people might have disagreed with their POV, but I miss them.
-
Just a suggestion but the mods could split this thread up. I've been reading threads here & believe some of the posts would fit quite well in the R&E section, then this one could get back to posts about whether the board is on its last legs.
-
I think so that it goes with a bang we will at an appropriate point institute a daily capricious Ban of the Day determined by Gordon of the poster who has most annoyed him that day, this to continue until only Gordon is left at which point he virtually self immolates and bans himself.
" you are the weakest link" Might do Anne Robinson out of a job 😉

"Familiarity breeds contempt."
Perhaps we've got too used to each other's stances, and ways of arguing.
We need something to stop it getting stale, new people probably.
Perhaps we are tending towards scrutinising each other, in a pedantic way now, ( splitting hairs ) we have been members so long.
I've noticed people get the huff, hence the Rhiannon Flounce 😉💐
-
It is like the twilight zone on here tonight. What have I missed with Walter and NS? Is it a joke thing?
I am waiting for he who cannot be named to make a surprise appearance.
Imagine Jack Nicholson from the shining and him doing..." I'm back".
Is it time for an AMNESTY>?

I hope not, what do you think?
Trying to learn Egyptology while debating with Jim has fried my brain a bit, so I haven't had much time for much else here. I might change my name to Preposterous the third.

Moderator:
For the avoidance of any doubt: there will be no amnesty and, as is invariably the case, the full details of permanent bans are not available to members: therefore uninformed speculation really is pointless.
So, can we move on please.

I agree. The Mods are killing this site!
-
On the contrary I've thought it through quite deeply.
Let's not get carried away. Some Mesoamerican civilisations were pretty nasty.

Dear Walter,
Well lets see, and in no particular order.
Sane, Wigs, Gordon, Blue, Squeak, Trent, Sass, Gonzo, Prof, Floo, Walter, Sriram, Rose, Jack, Jakswan, Robinson, Spud, Owlswing, Rhiannon, John, ippy, Jeremyp, Jim, Vlad, Humph, Harrowby, Seb, Alan B, Dicky, Tripp, 2Corrie, Maeght, Shaker.
That's 33 regulars and I might be missing some notables, so it's a no to your question.
But you have given me food for thought, I don't post on any other forum but I think I have one of those twitter account thingys, So Mods what's the best way to direct people to this forum?
Gonnagle.

Dear Sriram,
Would you like a wee shot at being a Moderator :o :o You won't like the job >:( you need a very tough skin, our Mods behind closed doors deal with a lot of shit, trust me I have been there and I was too much of a woss to handle it.

Dear Walter,
I forgot Torridon and old ado, that brings it up to 35, of course I could add Gabriella, a brilliant poster ( I do wish we had more Muslim members ) and, what about our very own NicholasMarks.
That makes 37 so far, which I think is not bad for a not to widely advertised forum, and lets not forget, quantity is only one aspect, what about quality, I have said it before but it is worth saying again, we have some fantastic minds on this forum!!
Gonnagle.

Whatever else one has to say about Nicholas Marks, he certainly livened up this forum. :D

You missed Outrider, ekim, Hope and Brownie (though both of them are banned). Lots of regulars on the Christian Board I think you have missed.
I wonder about Leonard too.....and horsethorn and Betty.

why mention banned posters ???
-
Sriram
Leonard was in his 90s, so, I say with regret, and hoping I'm mistaken, may no longer be with us. He had an amazingly sharp mind for a man of that age. I wish him all the best, wherever he may be.
Yes, some just seemed to stop posting: I miss Synonym; Drygthon's Toe and Feelin' Blue and Lapsed Atheist hasn't posted for a while.... although I may have missed him as I don't have time to look-in here as much as I used to.
-
Sweetpea,
Agree about Leonard, as we have posted elsewhere we made a number of behind the scenes to contact him, but none have bern successful. We've been trying to tempt back Alien with offer of a formal debate between him and someone who would be a new member on a subject of Christian doctrine. Of all of the posters we have lost Prof W is the one I miss most.

Yes..SweetPea. Maybe you're right about Leonard. I also miss Lapsed Atheist.....another mature poster. Of course, I am not sure about Oak King and merciful-evans. Sometimes people change their names...which also can be confusing.

Yes, it's a shame no detail can be found on Len.
Prof W was a character and I enjoyed some of the music he posted.

Now this is strange, because my memory is generally poor, but I remember merciful-evans saying he had joined the board to try and find-out more about the 'mystery of God'. He also posted that he had a specific date in mind as to when he would leave the forum, whether his questions had been answered of not... and he did.... his last 'farewell' post was on that very day. Why I remember that I really don't know, haha. I don't think he's returned under another name, though.

I cannot divulge that information unless you have signed the OFFICIAL SECRETS ACT . I fear I may have been followed .

whoa, Robinson
and I haven't known you long either but ill tell you this. From what I've read , I like you. A lot.
You inspire in me emotions I thought I had lost , feelings I thought were confined to history . My history. But , I'm embarrassed to say, you have awakened, so deeply , so profoundly my weakness, for ..... women . I am putty in their hands .
Please , if you have putty, use your hands to gently manipulate it into a shape that will bring pleasure to you each time you gently hold it , careful, its precious

From Sassy:

Oh of course - it all makes sense now: Northern Ireland, the Shias and the Sunnis, Palestine & Israel etc, it's all down to atheism!
Why didn't I spot this obvious truth sooner I wonder?

Why do you take things out of context. No wonder we have so many wars ALL CAUSED BY MEN,.
-
I got what you meant. It is people who cause those things.
-
I've walked away from interesting debate on here because pedantry and point scoring has stifled what was a good discussion. It has got to the point where I tend not to bother so much. Increasingly this seems to be a place where we keep in touch with each other rather than discuss religion and ethics.
Seconded
-
The truth is that if people do not know you personally they will attack you because they do not agree with your beliefs.
Those who have met up from here will have seen the person and so relate to them personally rather than just their beliefs
and treat each other respectfully. If they disagree then can post to say so.
But there are some who even having met a person if met only once will still choose to dislike or resent their beliefs.
I feel there is no point if holding something a person believes against them.
Whatever happens I think everyone airing their beliefs on this thread has been good.
:)

Won't the majority of those guests be automated bots or some such trying to gain access to sell us something we don't want to buy?

I think the guests are a mix of that and members not logged in the most online figure is not something that makes sense. I am not sure how the system calculates it but even if you take the entirety of the various bots that try to get a membership to spam us for one day it often doesn't come close to the most online.

I hope Shaker is ok he hasn't been on board since Feb 4th according to his profile.

So I note all of a sudden there are 47 guests! It's all s bit odd.

Isn't one of the problems that once everything has been said what is there to say.
-
I see we have a new member, but so far they haven't posted. I wonder why some people register but never post?
-
Perhaps they don't have much to say or just like reading what others post. Or think they will post tomorrow and tomorrow never comes.
Board seems reasonably active to me. I can't tell what it used to be like but seems OK right now.
Oh I joined an interfaith forum while back and have never posted!

The Oak King has dropped completely out of sight even to the Pagan Community in the real world.

I feel there is no point in holding something a person believes against them.
It is not the holding it against them that is the problem! It is telling them categorically and frequently that they are talking rubbish, that they are categorically wrong to believe what they do, that they are going to Hell for refusding to bel;ieve what YOU believe.
You Sass are one of the reasons that, having taken a break, I am leaving, because you never discuss - you never give any other reason why someone who does not believe like you is wrong except that you are right because the Bible says so amnd yuopu seem to think that you know more about my beliefs than I do, from "talking to a friend" rather than from personal experience!
If anyone gets to talk to them please give me very best wishes to Rhiannon and Shaker! They both have my e-mail should they wish to contract me.

Should you people take Christians so seriously that you get all insulted and all that?! Many atheists also talk rubbish and insult believers.
All these are memes fighting for their own survival. Part of Nature and evolutionary process. Take it lightly guys.
-
Good morning, just got up.
You are right sririam. Even Christians disagree loudly between themselves, occasionally laying down the law to eachother. Atheists pick on every tiny thing a Christian or non-Christian religious person says & won't let anything go. Accusations fly about. No point in getting cross especially when there are reasonable & good humoured posters of all types.

what puzzles me is why religious folk insist they are right , even when they can't even agree amongst themselves. Its madness.
Also , please give examples where atheists talk rubbish, I'm always up for a laugh!

To be honest, I think that picking a poster or posters whose approach you don't like as a big issue misses the point of the board. It is a form of special pleading. There are good and bad discussions on the board. I think we occasionally devolve too much into sides that argue past each other but those sides are at least fluid and not the same divisions across all threads. There are posters I enjoy posting with more than others, but why would that be surprising.

Well then you might just live to see the Second Coming. Maybe you will even be one of those present at that Judgement found in Matthew 25 - the one where there are no Christians present and where those who are there are found saying. 'When did we see you........'? I do hope you turn out to be one of the sheep! Life through eternity might be rather dull without you. :P :P

;D & you'll have to produce concrete evidence that he isn't, Dave.
It's not worth the hassle, whatever you say will be examined to minutiae and you'll be accused of having two cocks and a phallasy! Which you will then try to explain & it will go on ad infinitum.
(My twopennorth, Jesus said whoever ministers to others (sick, poor, imprisoned), ministers to him & so many do know Jesus without recognising it.)
