I may not agree with them - I don't - but I'm uneasy at the thought of them being banned. OK, JW's wear out doorknockers and dent the market for black puddings, but this is way over the top. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-39304984

I can't say that worries me too much as I detest that ghastly cult. I am much more concerned about Russia's attitude to gays.

The point about freedom is it is as important, if not more, to defend the freedom of those you disagree with as much as possible, not just those you agree with. Your attitude provide support to oppression and indirectly validates the Russian govts' attack on homosexuality.

So you'd be perfectly happy with Russia imprisoning those who disageree with them, then?
Really?
I'm no fan of the Russelites - but, seriously, floo, are you really happy that Russia might imprison them?

Considering how much physical harm and death that cult can cause by forbidding blood transfusions, I think prison might be a good idea if it causes a death, although a bit extreme I suppose just for believing in the JW garbage. Maybe the UK should think of imprisoning JWs if they cause the death of a minor, or a vulnerable person, by refusing a blood transfusion.

In the UK blood will be given, based on case law.

- Dunno what the 'UK' position is, but in Scotland a ruling from the local procuratior fiscal will ensure that any child is treated - legal stuff can then follow. But seriously; you'd be happy imprisoning someone for their belief just because you don't agree with it? What if some was imprisoned for atheism - as certain religion dominated cultures of several varietes have tried in the past?

It's a matter of principle, I believe some people have them.

I'm shooting from the hip/lip today, collateral damage is inevitable!

True, but by the time the court has ruled over the issue the damage could have been done. :o For anyone who doesn't know why I have such a jaundiced opinion of JWs, in 1986, when our darling adopted Down's Syndrome son was 16 months old, he needed a blood transfusion to save his life. A day or so later a couple over JWs knocked on our door and I challenged them about their stance on blood transfusion. They told me our lad would have been better off dead than receiving blood from another person! >:(
-
What has that got to do with imprisoning a sect in Russia, please, floo?

The JWs do not believe that someone is damned, if they are given blood without consent, as in case of child or unconscious.
Going back to anchorman's op, suppressing any type of movements makes martyrs. Whats the pointof that. I don't likethe JW religion but am glad we live in a free country and have choices regarding religious belief. The Witnesses were persecuted in Russia and under Hitler.
I read somewhere that Islam is growing in russia but a lot of it is cover. Young Russian women seek rich husbands in America, some of whom come from Muslim backgrounds, go figure.
-
For goodness sake!
I have relatives who are JW's, no way do I support Russia's stance on it.
Yes they are totally pacifist and believe in simplistic things, but I wouldn't ban them.
Russia isn't a tolerant place for difference, any difference.
I'm glad my relatives don't live there, because no one deserves that.
After all the main objection seems to be they won't vote or support politics and won't fight in a war.
If they don't want to, they shouldn't have to. It's all about control, control of the average person.
The Russian authorities can't dictate to them, what they think they should think.
It's all about power.
Either people conform or end up down some salt mine, horrible!
I prefer the JWs to the Russian authorities.

My understanding, which may not be accurate, is that hospitals have established ways of making vulnerable children wards of court and so can readily act in a child's best interest. I agree that whatever a sect's failings may be, persecuting that sect is a despicable act.
With reference to the treatment meted out to JWs by the third reich ...
Russell may have been the instigator of the JWs but the sect we know today was really the creation of J F Rutherford - one of the nastiest people ever to walk this planet. It is ironic that he was a great admirer of Adolf Hitler and acquired an apartment in Germany so that he could witness Hitler's oratory at first hand. The compliment was not returned ...
-
Don't get me started on the pyramidiocy and counter pyramidiocy which seemed to be the foundation of the sect, or the corruption, misapropriation of assets which peppered Rutherford's dictatorship....Beth Sarim and Elijah's cadillac come to mind....or the cavalier rewrite of the Bible to make it say something it certainly didn't say - and the vile treatment of the 'disfellowshipped' in the group. That being said, persecution of a group which doesn't conform to a state's idea of a faith or non faith position is against the United Nations Charter. (Mind you, the JW's believe that the U.N. is an instrument of Sat an anyway....)

Jim
I'm not a fan of the JWs, either but I also think it's a sign of the times.... which has always been and continues on today:
Matthew 10:22 You will be hated by everyone because of My name. But the one who endures to the end will be delivered.

No the JW's were shoved in the gas ovens alongside the Jews.
The holocaust was also theirs.

Harrowby Hall didn't say they weren't, so I don't understand your use of 'No' above

I was agreeing with the last part of his post.
As in No, the Nazis ( or Hitler)didn't return the complement.

It's all part and parcel of the same problem.

Yes. Intolerance of anything different and the politics of control.
( NS : I use both yes an no to agree with a post ;) )
