I wonder how many only found out the revelation on the thread about Chuck Berry by Googling?
I never knew about the above things but I am not sure how it takes away from his death as a musician and artist.
We need to remember that Jerry Lee Lewis married a 13 year old girl as the laws in some American states allowed this.
His career ended over night. Never charged with anything but literally his career ended in England over night.
Everything, as far as I am aware has changed now in the USA. In some countries girls as young as 9 years of age are married to much older men. We as a nation clearly have double standards... our charities ask us to support them to stop those girls dying.
Then they allow those men and child brides into this country. It is my belief if something illegal here that they should be arrested if they break our laws by bringing that child bride with them and having sexual relations.
If we could not accommodate the actions of those things in the 60's we are surely not going to accommodate them today.
What I find extremely difficult is a friend of mine is married to a man who comes to visit her and the children they have a couple of times a year. He lands at different airports and he has already taken his two children to his own country for visits.
His daughter became very poorly on one of those visits and there was talk he would take her over to his country to choose a husband when she was 9 years old. I found it very disturbing as she is a British Citizen and protected by English law.
Why is he not allowed to remain in this country? Why does he use different airports and why hasn't her British mother informed the authorities. When he was here for Christmas the children were not allowed to celebrate the holiday and did not get any toys because he was here.
I am truly concerned about such things. If a mother allows her children to travel alone with their Father and he is looking for husbands at such a young age, surely it is time for the authorities to step in?

Berry was a pervert so that is what defines him, imo! >:(

So does the define Jerry Lee Lewis whose marriage was legal in some states of America?
Who made the laws who made these men perverts? Why are we still entertaining people from countries who are having sex with 9 year olds and getting them pregnant and then their country asks us to pay to save them?
Surely there has to be international laws preventing those who do these things can be arrested on our soil if they do it here.
Jerry Lee Lewis wasn't arrested. We need to protect ALL children on our soil and the law should allow for our Country to detain the child bride of such men and prevent them returning till adulthood if they want to return.

I was not aware that Jerry Lee Lewis's career ended overnight. I thought that it had stumbled a little but he has been a successful performer in the USA for decades.
Why doesn't Sassy get equally upset about an unmarried young woman of a similar age who became pregnant about two thousand years agosomewhere in the Middle East?

Goodness, Gracious I am finding it hard to believe that you are not aware of this song - but if it is truly the case then perhaps you have been residing in an alternate universe I am unaware of. Apologies.

You've never been to Guernsey, then. When I first went to Jersey I commented that it was like England was 20 years ago. I was told that I should go to Guernsey - it's like Jersey was 20 years ago ... ::)

Yeah but isn't Floo in Wales now?
Although I suppose some wag could argue that Wales is like England was 20 years ago ;)

What a ghastly noise! :o I don't like music especially pop, but will tolerate classical as my husband enjoys it.

Sheltered, that is hilarious. Growing up after the war in an island, which had been occupied by the Germans, it was hardly sheltered. Times without number I have nearly lost my life due to getting myself into a very dangerous situations, or having them imposed on me. Like when I was two and my crazy young uncles, who were supposed to be babysitting me, decided to take me with them when they were going to do a very stupid and dangerous diving stunt! >:( They had me sitting on a rock at the top of a steep cliff, from where dived into the sea below. They told me not to move from the rock as I would have undoubtedly have joined them! My mother would have skinned them alive if she had known, saying, "What would people think if she had been killed." One of my mother's major concerns was what people were thinking! ::)

I'd read about Chuck Berry's earlier activities a while ago and wished I hadn't known but already mentioned that on his RIP thread.
Re Jerry Lee, he was from an area where kids did marry very young. Think of the C&W singer Loretta Lynn (Coalminer's Daugter) who married at 14 and had four kids by 19. From what I know it was legal to marry in Ireland at 14 until recently. So Jerry Lee didn't do anything wrong by the rules of the times he lived in but it was frowned upon over here and seems wrong now. Jerry Lee did at least love and marry her, by all accounts she always loved him back.
Elvis brought his wife Priscilla over to Gracelands to live when she was only 14/15 and they married when she was 21.
Pop and rock singers & musicians used to doexactly what they wanted. Bill Wyman had a long time girlfriend who was 13 when they first got together. Sick. The law did nothing! They used to boast about their udnerage girls & had no conscience about them.Even Bowie apparently. Nowadays the 'stars' are better behaved.
I separate Chuck Berry's behaviour from his great talent but still wish I hadn't known.

There;s a blast from past. Never seen it but taken note forwhen it is next on TV (my TV is working again, praise be, everything went wrong a few days ago inc. computer).
Floo probably does take pleaseure from things, just different things & she's quite fun from what I;ve seen. I have met people who hardly even knew anything about Elvis or Beatles even though they were kids at the time. Seems odd but it happens. My parents remember Vera Lynn& Glen Miller with affection but they did manage to move on.
However......let's get back to Chuck and his ilk & "Is/are there doubl standards in this country?" ::) . I'd think not, just some are disappointed and bewildered but there's nothing new under the sun, a sentence someone famous once said in an old book........

Why do I have to enjoy music? My lack of enjoyment of it doesn't make me mentally ill, as you appear to be implying, than you are for creating so many threads, the rationale behind which I still don't get!

I don't think you have to like music or that you are mentally ill. Just as I don't think that someone with dyslexia is mentally ill. I suspect that you hear things differently to most people because from your description it sounds like the music causes you pain.
Last time you asked about the threads, I explained and you said you understood. Has that changed?

For anyone who's interested here's the age of marriage in the US according to each state.

Pop music certainly does my head in that is for sure. It is strange really, as my Father was very musical, he even went on a tour of the States in 1961 with choir. My sisters and my daughters are also very musical. My mother and I missed out on it.

Is there some popular music that are worse than others?

Thanks for the info about marriageable age in various states of US, ad-orientum.
I looked up Ireland (used to be 14 with parental consent),but can't find upto date information.
Was 15 years and three months in France years ago.

I like both kinds of music , country AND western.

Just interested if it might be something physical about your hearing.

I'm guessing its something irrational , like my intense dislike to James Cordon. I mute my TV and look away when THAT advert comes on and I've never even met him .

My hearing isn't good in my old age, but it was fine in my youth.
Some posters on forums think I am weird! Yes I say what I think and make no apology for that. I don't suck up to people or pay compliments I don't mean, as I suspect some posters do.
However, funnily enough people who know me in real life, instead of the unreal virtual cyber-world, seem to rate me. I do my best to help others if I can, not that I need any accolades for that at all, I am just being me.
I am fortunate enough to have wonderful children, I enjoy my hobbies, particularly my artwork, which people seem to like. It gives me a lot of pleasure to create a picture, for free, just to make someone happy.
I have never tried to fit in or belong to the crowd, I have always stood apart from it, as that is how I am.
Anyway that is me, far from perfection, but as long as I am good enough, that is all that counts.

The point about your hearing isn't about whether you can hear but how you hear it. Your description makes it sound like you are hearing sonething different to most people like someone who is colour blind. And again someone being colourblind isn't a comnent on them

About time we left floo alone, she's not hurting us. We come in different shapes, colours & sizes, thats what makes the human race intersting.
None has owt to do with Chuck Berry.

Talking of colour blindness, which appears to be more common in men, it is red/green which gives them problems. If a woman is colour blind she has difficulty with a range of colours, so I believe. According to my father his great grandmother had great difficulty distinguishing a range of different colours, they all appeared to be the same to her, poor woman. :(
Blimey this thread has gone way off topic, probably my fault! :-[

Nah, I think that was probably mine. I find the idea of not liking music very difficult to comprehend. Anyhoo good to know that you are enjoying life .
Back on track, it seems odd to me that the various issues during Berry's life were not more well known.

It does not appear to be very common, but there is a condition called anhedonia - which is related to a dislike of pleasure. It exists in a number of states including sexual anhedonia. One version is called specific musical anhedonia . People with this condition just don't get music - it has little or no meaning for them. I have a friend for whom this is the case. I suspect that Floo is simply someone with this condition.

sexual anhedonia, my ex-wife developed that soon after we were married
-
As for colour blindness - well, colour anomalous vision would be a better description.
The source of red-green anomaly is the X chromosome and it is transmitted to children by their mothers. Females have two X chromosomes and it is rare that a woman will possess two chromosomes carrying this deficit. Men, possessing only one X chromosome, lack this protection and the incidence of the anomaly is therefore greater than in women.
To the best of my knowledge, anhedonia is not sex linked.

Not old enough for the GERMANS surely. My mother was nearly 5 years old when war broke out.
She was nearly 11 when it ended. If alive she would be 83 this year. You surely are not in your late 70's early 80's??? Or do you mean you were born on an island which had been inhabited by the Germans before you were born?
I hate to tell you this but the war affected more than your Island and did so for many years after.
-
Must have affected Chuck Berry then as he was 90.
-

I have also met some people who lived on Guernsey at the time the Germans were there ( one was a small child at the time.) and I think a lot of the people there were half starved, because it was what he seemed to remember.
I think it being an island and being occupied meant it wasn't so easy to smuggle food in.
Not sure what aspect would have affected Floo, but I guess its impact on the adults around her would have made an impression.
I got the impression that the people on Guernsey had a hard time of it, more so than many on the uk mainland.
-
The Channel Islands - during the German occupation were effectively a prison camp. Islanders could be - and were - executed for matters we would consider trivial (for instance keeping pigeons). The occupying Germans ensured their own comfort first - they commandeered houses, food, equipment. Following the Normandy landings, the British policy was to starve the Germans into submission. It was the islanders (mostly women, children and the elderly) who bore the brunt.
Your comments, Sassy, are crass and uncharitable. You have no conception of what life was like for five years for islanders - the final irony being that they were eventually liberated the day after WW2 ended, following which the German soldiers continued - under British command - to be used for law enforcement.
-
I thought they were well known too but the reaction on here seems to be indicative that they weren't.
I knew about it and think it was fairly well known but only if you looked into Chuck Berry's history which most people don't.It's making small headlines now because he has died and if people seem to gloss over it, it is because sexual excesses of all types & drugs were the norm for musicians of his era, including many of our own. We'll hear more about those when they die! Chuck Berry was no worse and maybe a lot better than others, some charges against him were flimsy (don't care about the financial ones), others plain weird. Think of those we know on whom he had the most musical influence & it's plain they haven't been paragons of virtue. Nobody caredthat much years ago, they were expected to be bad boys, it's different now thank goodness.
