This is the bit where we all hide under desks and makeshift shelters made out of doors, isn't it?

Why oh why does this little tweet from Stephen King last year keep popping into my head:
Say, here's an idea! Let's turn America's nukes over to a bad-tempered asshole with no knowledge of foreign policy. What could go wrong?
-
May be it will work, may be what seems to be an even handed warning from China might work. And I think we have to be careful here on the Blane being Trump and America. The inability to do anything to make Nth Korea move from a path of lunatic pariahhood is central here.
-
I hope Trump doesn't do anything stupid, and China reins in N. Korea.
-
I think the real issue here is who allowed N. Korea to develop nukes and why hasn't it been dealt with earlier. It is only now that people are thinking this may be a problem, now that it is pretty much too late.
-
Totally agree that this should have been dealt with before. But in the here and now we have a president who can't keep his hands to himself and on current evidence can't keep his bombs to himself either. That is a real danger imo.

If it is possible then I think all the missile sites in North Korea should be hit before they can react.
That way they cannot launch a nuclear missile.
Then the whole of their air force should also be destroyed.

It seems that in order for the rest of the world to take action against North Korea, that country would first have to attack another country or do something that resulted in people being killed; unfortunately that is the only way military action is justifiable. N. Korea doesn't appear to want to use its weapons except in defence, so I can't see anything significant being done.
-

How is demonstrating that Japan is within range of supposedly nuclear-armed ballistic missiles defensive?

Ok it's provocative, but is it aggressive?
-
Japan, for (what I would have thought are) obvious reasons maintains a Self Defence Force that is only one fifth the size of North Korea's army. Japan has no long range bombers or attack-based aircraft carriers. Japan's constitution renounces the right to initiate attack in international confrontation.
Under these circumstances North Korea's behaviour can only be considered aggressive.
-
North Korea seems determined to provoke a major confrontation with the US, are they crazy or what?
-
You could argue that it's fairly rational. The US keeps threatening them, and they know that other countries have a nuclear deterrence. In other words, if you bomb us, we will retaliate. Of course, it could all go wrong, esp. in relation to S. Korea.

Hopefully N Korea will take note as both China and Russia have voted for sanctions against that country.
-
It could go two ways: firstly, if North Korea behaves like Isis when they got hold of the Iraqui military's weaponry and started killing people, then Russia and China would get involved as well as the USA and eventually defeat N. Korea (can't see the US doing it without other countries helping).
Or, North Korea holds off and agrees to disarm. Let's hope it's the latter.

China needs to take drastic action over NK and draw a line in the sand, before Trump does something really crazy!
-
I don't think there are only two options. Another one is that N. K. keeps testing bombs, and nobody does anything, well, barring sanctions. Everybody is worried about the retaliation, not against the US, but S. Korea, as no doubt N.K. has a ton of weaponry aimed across the border. The first bomb to fall on N.K. may provoke this, all along the border and aimed at Seoul also.
This has unforeseen consequences - another Korean war, China intervening, because they don't want US bases against their frontier, millions of refugees, and so on. It's true that Trump is crazy, but his generals will be warning him.
-
All it takes is another one of those 'tests' to go haywire, and a missile - even with a dummy warhead - to land on Japanese territory.
And apparently NK are planning a few more launches in the next few days....

Yes, there could be a war by accident. But apart from that, I think the stand-off will continue. Nobody dares to risk attacking first, as the consequences could be so awful, e.g. another Korean war, with millions of refugees. NK actually doesn't need a nuclear deterrent, as it already has a conventional one. I guess winding up Trump is fun.

Let's hope the US military strategists have studied Sun Tzu's 'The Art of War'.

So they can work out the manual?
'Congratulations on choosing the BigDick H Bomb with integral launch system. Please read all instructions carefully before use...'

Hope they've shown Trump where N. Korea is on the map. It's that little bit, above that other little bit, that's our friend. Aw hell, let's just bomb them all.

I was just hoping they had sufficient brains to be able to read.

No word of a lie, on the news on the radio they explained that South Korea is the closest country to North Korea. No shit.

Only one of. China and Russia are just as close to the North, also having land borders with it.

North Korea does not have a land border with Russia. Google maps and Apple maps both have the border running down the middle of a river.

I think that counts as a land border.

It's not on land is it.

It is not a sea coast, therefore it is land. The river bed not the river surface is where the border lies.

China apparently doesn't want N. Korea to have a nuclear capability.
I read up a bit about the Korean war this morning. Prior to 1945, Korea was ruled by Japan. Then it was split in two by Russia and America. Apparently North Korea attempted to unify Korea by force in 1950, with China and Russia's backing. But UN troops, mainly American, helped defend South Korea. But it seems there was never any signed treaty between the north and the south after that.
The split between the two countries is a by-product of the Cold War, and the difference between the them is one is communist, one is not. With Communism in decline, it seems any unified Korea would be more likely to be non-communist.
Maybe for now the best outcome would be for North Korea to recognize South Korea and work towards a more peaceful relationship. As for nuclear capability, I'm not sure why China wouldn't want them to have it. Perhaps it would enable North Korea to maintain its independence?
-
Spud
I'm not sure that I would describe North Korea as "communist". I would say that it is a hereditary feudal dictatorship masquerading as communist.
-

The sea has a bed too.
Apple maps and Google maps disagree about where the border is. Google maps has a border going down the middle of a river that is probably a couple of miles wide. Apple maps seems to count the river as part of the sea.
-
I wasn't aware that either Google or Apple were the recognised authorities in determining national borders.
I have looked at Google Earth. The boundary follows the river bed as far as Khasan. The river does not appear to be estuarial at that point.
