Another religionist official, an Ausie one this time, I wonder where the catholic establishment will try to move him to, none to easy to cover this one up, I wouldn't think.

Reading this, and noting my own reaction to it, I wonder how easy it will be for a trial to be fair. The cover up on sexual abuse means that words and denials ring hollow.

. This underlines my wondering about the possibility of a fair trial as you have assumed he is guilty.

Agree with this.

Number 3 in the hierarchy of the Catholic Church has been charged with historical sex abuse in Australia.
It is very much to his credit that he intends to return and face up to the charges.
This is a court case to watch with interest.

That's a change N S, usually unless the grammar is beyond reproach by the minutest degree you profess to not understand and now something simple and you're reading in your own interpretation.
Just an observation, I really don't mind and of course you're entitled to make whatever observation you like.

Moderator Note I've merged three topics on this into one, and in order to make clear the topic edited ippy's title to include Cardinal Pell.

referring to a cover up assumes guilt.

Like I said you're entitled to take my words in any way you wish.

If this guy is guilty of the multiple sexual abuse charges against him, I hope they lock him up and throw away the key. >:(

He is hierarchy!
Like NS I hope he gets a fair hearing.

If god exists and is looking down at what is done in its name maybe it gets off on the acts of sexual perverts!

Which may well not include Cardinal Pell

But on the other hand it might, we shall see.

Yes, that is understood by the concept of 'may not'.

No it isn't. Australia has been asking him to come back and answer questions about these crimes for years. Until the formal charges were made, he had been adamantly refusing to do so.

Does anyone know of any case, of this nature, involving a member of the Catholic church where they have been found not guilty? only I can't think of any.
I saw in the media where they say he's the Catholic's top man in Australia, I would think the authorities involved would necessarily have to be very sure of their facts before taking on such a high official of this church and then charging him.

At the same time, it is important to recall that Cardinal Pell has openly and repeatedly condemned as immoral and intolerable the acts of abuse committed against minors
At the same time it's important to recall that the guilty almost always say this sort of thing.
At the same time, it is important to recall that those who leap in with various counter-arguments be made cognisant of the (recent) history/back-story of the Catholic Church with regard to the rape of children and its cover-up and institutional corruption. If this seems like prejudice ... well: don't let your minions rape children and then cover it up, all over the planet for decades, and there probably won't be so much antipathy. Just a thought.
Whether Pell is guilty of raping children I don't know and don't know how I could know. Would I be surprised, if true? Absolutely not in the slightest. Whether Pell is guilty of being a disgusting waste of resources entirely aside from raping children, in my estimation, hell yes.
Memory temporarily fails but I think it was in The God Delusion where Dawkins said that he hates the Catholic Church but hates unfairness more.
He has the advantage of me there: knowing what we know now I don't think unfairness to the Catholic Church is even possible.
