Doubly absurd given a thread of Professor Davey's posted earlier today on General Discussion:

Quote
The complementary Scottish Social Attitudes survey shows an even greater proportion of the population (58%) indicating that they have no religion - again the highest level ever recorded in the survey.

It strikes me that as the influence of religion in and over the populace dwindles year on year there's a redoubling of effort from some quarters to make an ever-shrinking thing retain the same amount of influence.

I don't even know what blasphemy is.

Doubt anyone does in terms of how the law might be applied now. That it is effectively merely symbolic is all the note reason to get rid of it.

How silly, especially as Scotland seems to be ahead of the rest of UK in other areas!

Mmm, I think rumours of Scotland's forward thinking are greatly exaggerated. We do well on having gay political leaders but mostly nothing special.

As were claims that Scotland had effectively expunged the Conservative party in that realm.

Yes, there may well be as link between the remaining sectarianism and the current relative resurgence of the Tories.

I'd say that's a cert.
Mind you, the connection between the OO and Christianity escapes me.

As far as the blasphemy law goes, it was debated in the CofS General Assembly back in 1987.
The overwhelming majority of commissioners backed its' abolition, and petitioned Westminster accordingly.
It isn't an issue in the Kirk, or the RC church, as far as I know.
Dunno about the rest.

My understanding is the RC church is still opposed to abolition.

Fairy nuff.....interesting that they agree with the Wee Frees on something, at least!
