How should we react to this? Joy at their wish to be married in church or because they landed one, Holloway-like, on the church?

I reacted by wanting to know more - I suspect that there wasn't any real choice to getting married in church at the time though.

Have you ever heard of these two?

Interesting that they are not that well known, and seem not to be thought of a lesbian role models, despite (or perhaps because of) the fact they were accepted in their local community & lived a quiet life.

Well the Spanish couple don't appear well known either or thought of as role models for the vast majority of the time since.

A couple of elderly women teachers at the school I attended in the 60s shared a home together. The pupils, including myself, wondered if they had a lesbian relationship, as they seemed unusually friendly.

Is that in anyway due the feminist movement who until recently were against or questioned the institution of marriage?

People are very friendly if they share a house for years and unmarried women have been doing that forever, they're not always lesbians.
Both stories are very interesting.

The ladies of Llangollen are a bit closer to home, so could be expected to be a little better known. FTR I read about them in a seventies book entitled "World Famous Rebels". I wonder what the ladies would have thought about being included in a book with Lenin?

I didn't say they were, it was just something about them that seemed more than just friendship. Not that it matters nowadays, but then they would have been sacked, which is terrible.

I've been looking up the ladies of Llangollen and now I long to see it. Llangollen looks like a very pretty market town, has some decent hotels. Maybe a long weekend.

Its ok, but it gets extremely busy and parking can be an absolute nightmare!

Thanks LR. It was just a thought, the ladies' house has piqued my interest.
