I was just thinking that given what's happening it would be good to have a PM in place and in charge, and then I thought of Johnson, and groaned. This is major tough diplomacy.

And still the protests continue and have a greater effect - there's not much that the UK govt can do but anything that they might is going to be easily ignored by the Chinese as we have too much else going on.

Watching the live pictures, just incredibly tense.
-
And still it continues - my wife is due to be there for 10 days next month and I have to admit to feeling a tad worried about it.
-
If this had happened a couple of months ago then it may well have been enough but it feels as if it is too late - the problem of the remaining demands is the free election one.

And China's 70th anniversary marked with more protests.

This is very sad. Note I wouldn't play the video if you're likely to be upset, they edit it so you don't quite see the shooting but it's about as good as showing it.

The situation goes on an on, sooner or later China is likely to step in and no doubt make it even worse.

I don't think they have sent troops in yet, have they?

False dichotomy

Meaning?
That China 'stepping in' is not a dichotomy between not doing anything and sending in troops.

From people on the ground, there is ongoing technology blocks, the police presence is added to by Chinese police and there is infiltration of various protest groups by Chinese secret police.

Students being brought back. And my wife was due to be there in a couple of weeks but it is looking like her company will hold off sending people.

On a personal level that must be a huge relief.

It's odd, I wouldn't really have been worried as it's easy to avoid the protests but at the same time the question is what happens next. We're due there Feb/Mar for a couple of days holiday en route elsewhere.

The slow ratcheting up of the confrontations is quite scary. It gets harder to see how either side stops. Beginning to get worried for our friends there for the first time. While there are ongoing protests in Paris, which are little reported on, tyey have settled into a tempo unlike here.

Hong Kong is certainly not a good place in which to live these days. Some years ago my youngest uncle and family lived there, he is a doctor, now retired. They must be very relieved they are now back in Switzerland.

I hope so, but I doubt it.

I'm a bit more optimistic. The change gives the democracy protestors a win, and also an out for the Chinese authorities. There's a bit of breathing space created for both sides, and that was definitely needed. Lam's statement is pretty good. That doesn't rule out that everything being back where it was in a few months but it could well break the cycle they were in.

I expect if there is no improvement the next stage will be the creation of an anti democracy 'training centre'.... https://tinyurl.com/tb3ymc8

I would doubt that - note I'm not ruling out a crack down on those leading the democracy protests at some stage but HK is a very different situation for China as opposed to the Uighurs.
-
I'm certain the Chinese government will be reviewing how they're going continue turning the screw probably with a bit more subtly in the future and doubtless will still carry on with the process.

Not sure how this law will play out. It places the HK situation firmly in the midst of the trade talks between U.S. and China.

Technically, with the content of the legislation not published yet and formal unveiling tomorrow we might all be jumping the gun a little bit... but I fear that it's not going to be encouraging at all.

Already having an effect, but good for UK govt.

I have no problem with them coming to the UK as long as they are expected to self-isolate for at least two weeks, and tested to see if they have the virus.

They are not all just about to get on a plane. We are not getting 3 million people next week. This is currently a symbolic gesture but a rather excellent one by the govt.

It'll be interesting to see how the pro-Democracy protesters apply for their UK passports from the prisons the Chinese authorities have waiting for them... :(

Well I hope there will be some people already applying who aren't in jail, but yes, the arrests today are quite scary.
And I will give a big fuck off to many international companies currently indulging in a whole we really think Black Lives Matter announcement who are kowtowing to the Chinese govt here, and yes HSBC, particularly looking at you.

Sadly, I think you are right! The Chinese Govt attitude seems to be "You don't like what we are doing? WTF are you going to do about it?
