Interesting article. I do hope he will do well in the Australian and that every aspect of health care will have been thought of.

Thank goodness Andy and family have all fully recovered. I hope that will give them a good level of immunity and that there will be no residual health effects in the future.
Also good to see thatEvans won that tournament.
-
Yes, it was a big win for Evans, his first ATP tournament. Surprised to see that Auger Aliassime has not won one yet and that his loss to Evans was the 7th final he has lost.
Russia wins ATP Cup easily and Medvedev is the player in form for the Australian on a 14 match winning streak.
The lack of year end tournaments for the women make form pretty impossible to tell much about form, but a good finals win for Barty in her first tournament in a year. Andreescu through in 1st round after her first match in 15 months.
-
Very exciting 1st round match coming up between Shapovalov and Sinner. Sinner has won his past 2 tournaments.
-
Konta pulls out of her match through injury, Watson through, and Francesca Jones out - though Jones qualifying at all is a great story.
Norrie beats Evans who looked tired after his tournament win. Nice to see a win for Kokkinakis after long period of injury.
Double bagel win for Barty, after her tournament win at weekend, and the pressure on her to win her home Grand Slam is growing.
Excellent match as hoped yesterday between Shapovalov and Sinner, with Shapovalov taking it in the 5th set.
-
Murray wins his first round match in Biella, beating Marterer in 3 sets
-
Andreescu, Kvitova, and Venus Williams out. From the report of Williams playing on with a further injury to finish a match, one has to suspect that this is her last Australian Open.

Great match between Osaka and Muguruza.

-
Murray easily beaten in final in Biella.
I caught that on the radio during the night, but I'm sorry he was beaten easily!
-
And Karatsev into the semi final. Have to admit had not heard of him before this week.
Easy win for Osaka.
-
Serena played great match against Halep setting up great looking semi final against Osaka.
Djokovic beats Zverev in 4 sets. Unless the injury Djokovic has been playing with gets worse, difficult to see Karatsev getting any further.
-
A shock seeing Barty knocked out from a set and a break up. The wait for an Australian singles winner of the Australian Open continues.
Medvedev's win over Rublev moves him up to 3 in the rankings. If he wins the tournament he would be ranked second.
-
What a match from Tsitsipas and Nadal!. Coming back from 2 sets down against Nadal has apparently only ever been done twice.
-
Osaka beats Williams in straight sets, and reading the news conference you have to wonder if it's Williams last Australian Open
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/tennis/56108395
-
Salisbury and Ram make final of men's doubles, knocking out Soares and Jamie Murray, but Salisbury knocked out in mixed doubles semi final.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/tennis/56114777
-
Medvedev beats Tsitsipas in straight sets. This a seriously impressive winning streak from Medvedev as it has because of it taking place across the ATP finals and ATP Cup meant that he's played a lot of top ten players. I make it 12 of the 20 match winning streak has been over top ten opponents.
-
And Osaka wins her 4th Slam, she's looking as if a very large number is possible.
-
In the end a bit of a damp squib of a men's final. Medvedev lost focus after a tough first set. 18 Slams for Djokovic and will shortly pass Federer's record for weeks at No1.
-
Barty beaten in Adelaide tournament.
-
Missed that Murray was beaten fairly easily by Gerasimov in Montpellier.

Was it a case of experience over energy, do you think? Or did they appear to be fairly equally matched?
Federer was not at his best but given it's his first match oj over a year not surprising. I thought Evans did well but also didn't play as well as I've seen him. Very difficult to conclude much from it.
-
Federer loses in 3 sets to Basilashvili. Not seen the match. Basilashvili is a good player but hasn't been on form of late.
-
Karatsev beats Evans in Dubai

-
Good win for Norrie in Acapulco over Fognini
-
Norrie goes out in Acapulco, losing to Koepfer.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/tennis/56453624
-
Big win for Karatsev in Dubai as he continues his great start to the year. Standing at 5 in the ATP Race currently, and up 89 places in the rankings since start of year.
Unlike Dubai, where the unseeded Karatsev beat the qualifier Harris in the final, Acapulco had the top 2 seeds Tsitsipas and Zverev in the final, with Zverev winning.

I am sorry to read that. I wonder how he deals with these setbacks? With a positive attitude, or well, that's life attitude, or with a lot of anxiety?
-
Good win for Norrie over Dimitrov in Miami
-
Medvedev knocked out by Bautista Agut. Sinner into the semi finals and up to 24 in the provisional rankings.
Osaka knocked out by Sakkari, meaning Barty will remain No 1
-
Barty and Andreescu into women's final. Great to see Andreescu back from injury and playing well.
In the men's semi finals, even with the absence of so many top and well known players, a line up of Bautista Agut, Rublev, Hurkacz and Sinner would be novel.
Evans and Neale Skupski into the final of the men's doubles in their first tournament. Since Jamie Murray split with Neale Skupski, Skupski has beaten Murray and Soares twice, once with Evans, and once with his brother Ken. He's guaranteed his highest ever doubles ranking after the tournament and will be higher ranked than Murray
-
Men's final in Miami will be between Sinner and Hurkacz. Sinner has been an advancing star for some time, and along with the even younger Musetti, is part of an Italian contingent that could well win team competitions in the next few years. Hurkacz had seem a bit becalmed in the low 30s rankings in the last couple of years so this is a big step up.
-
Hurkacz wins - anyone betting on that at the start would be doing well.
Barty wins with Andreescu retiring hurt. Really worrying that it's yet another injury for Andreescu.
-
Evans playing tomorrow as the no1 seed in the Sardinia Open. Tough draw with the young Italian Musetti.

that is very good, isn't it. I heard it on the PM programme. At least Evans has a nice easy name to remember!
-
that is very good, isn't it. I heard it on the PM programme. At least Evans has a nice easy name to remember!
It's by some distance his best. He's provisionally up to no 27 with this which is one below his highest ranking. He's now nearly 31 which once would have been old. He's done much better and is much more consistent since his drugs ban.
He also won his doubles match with Neale Skupski beating the 3rd seeds Dodig and Polasek after this match so a good day.
Also lower down the rankings a good win for Liam Broady over Nakashima moves him up to provisional 137, 15 up on his highest ranking.
Later we get the UK in the Billie Jean Cup, Fed Cup as was, against Mexico. No Konta.
-
And Evans beats Goffin to make the semi final
-
Evans and Neale Skupski into semi finals in the doubles!
UK 2-0 up in Billie Jean Cup v Mexico, wins for Boulter and Watson
-
And Rublev beats Nadal.
Tsitsipas v Evans
Rublev v Ruud
If anyone had predicted that before the start, get them to tell you the lottery numbers.
-

:D Nice to hear Evans mentioned two days running on the PM programme too.
-
Tsitsipas and Rublev win to bring a semblance of normality back. Evans playing in the doubles semi final now.
-
Rublev's win means he will at least move up to Number 7 in the rankings, a new career high, and if he wins the final wpuld move up to 6.
Federer now drops to 8, and Zverev would fall to 7.
-
And Evans and Neale Skupski are into the final putting out the top seeds Cabal and Farah
-
Boulter seals UK's win over Mexico in the Billie Jean Cup
-
Evans and Skupski lose in a Champions tiebreak
-
And Tsitsipas wins in straight sets
-
Good win for Norrie over Kachanov, the 12th seed, in Barcelona
-
Another good win for Evans in the doubles in Barcelona ; he's now up to 52 in the doubles ranking.
I see Jamie Murray is in an odd doubles pairing this week in Barcelona with Ivan Dodig. I presume they are a scratch pair with Soares, Murray's current normal partner out, and something similar perhaps with Polasek, Dodig's partner.

The changes and ups and downs because of the covid 19 have certainly shaken the tennis world during the last twelve months.
I am astonished given everything that they have managed to hold anything like as many tournaments that they have. Yesterday France had over 40,000 cases of Covid and yet they've just held a tournament in Monte Carlo.
-
Evans loses to Moutet. Nadal through but drops a set to the qualifier Ivashka. Fognini disqualified.
Murray and Dodig win their doubles.
-
Norrie beats Goffin. Nadal through in 3 sets again.
Evans and Skupski beaten by top seeds Cabal and Farah. Ram and Salisbury (Uk's current top ranked doubles player) beat Murray and Dodig.
-
Nadal and Tsitsipas into final
-
Djokovic beaten by Karatsev.
Barty and Sabalenka into final in Porsche
Ram and Salisbury out

Do you think it looks as if Jokovic has come to more or less the end of his successes?
-
Do you think it looks as if Jokovic has come to more or less the end of his successes?
That would he a bit harsh given he won the Australian Open as his 19th Slam title only a couple of months ago, is ranked No1 , and has recently taken the record of most weeks at No1 for men.
At his best, he is still the best player on the tour, it maybe though that he is less often at his best but it may just be that in this odd time his motivation is less consistent.
Karatsev though is the tennis story of the year so far. Ranked 115 at the start of the year, now ranked 27, and in terms of year to date points 5th.
-
NS
thank you for interesting reply.
-
Nadal beats Tsitsipas in 3 very tight sets, and moves back to No 2 ranking
Barty wins at the Porsche tournament.
-
Djokovic pulls out of Madrid
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/tennis/56914910
-
Win for Norrie in Estoril and win for Konta for in Madrid
-
Big win for Norrie over Garin the second seed. He will now play Cilic who beat Anderson. Anderson retired which given his injury problems will be a worry.
In the BMW Open Ivashka, a qualifier, puts out top seed Zverev.
-
Norrie into final in Estoril, Konta knocked out in Madrid
-
Norrie lost very close final, and now he's onto Madrid.
Evans wins first round in Madrid against Chardy.
Jamie Murray back playing with Soares but knocked out in first round.
-
Norrie pulled out in Madrid with blisters
-
Zverev beats Nadal in straight sets and is in semi final. Ruud having another good tournament.
Barty consolidating her no 1 position and into final

I heard a word or two about that on FiveLive yesterday evening.
I wonder if the players have found the unpredictability of the on/off matches and the changes in the routines have made life more interesting and given them a greater incentive to train etc.
-

I would suspect it's affected different players in different ways. It certainly seems to have helped players like Karatsev Evans, and Sabalenka (now ranked no 4 after beating Barty in Madrid).
Evans did, however, get knocked out in Rome this morning, and it sounds like he was way below the standard he has been playing. Also Ruud who has been doing well pulled out injured.
Medvedev is back to no 2 in the rankings, with Nadal dropping points last week. He's not defending any points this week so a win would put him close to Djokovic.
-
Norrie wins in Rome. Andy Murray to play in the doubles
-
Konta easily beaten in Rome by Ostapenko
-
And Osaka loses. Not looking good on clay. Makes Barty a goid chance to remain No 1 throughout the years if she wins the French.
Later on, Serena plays her 1,000th singles match, and her first match since losing to Osaka at the Australian.
-
And Serena loses to Podoroska. Not entirely a surprise given the lay off and Podoroska got to semi final of the French last year.
-
Andy Murray and Liam Broady through in doubles, as are Salisbury and Ram.
Halep out injured.
-
Karatsev beats Medvedev to continue his great year, and means Medvedev will still be over 1000 points behind Djokovic.
-
And a win for Nadal over Sinner moves Nadal up to 9 in the ATP race over Sinner who is now 10.
-
And we have another Djokovic v Nadal Masters final. Even if Nadal wins he will be ranked No3 after this.
In the women's we have Swiatek v Karolina Pliskova, Swiatek looking good for defending her French title. Barty retired injured.
And Joe Salisbury in the men's doubles final.
Andy Murray has pulled out of Geneva and the French.
-
Ram and Salisbury lose.
Swiatek wins, double bagelling Pliskova
-
That's amazing that Nadal and Jokavic are still at the top of the tennis game.
P.S. May I ask if you would be kind enough to find out when I started asking about crossword help? As the current topic is 'Part 2' I think it is about four yars ago. Just when you have time of course - no rush - just curious to know

Nadal wins in 3 sets.
-
Norrie beats Moutet in Lyon. Federer due to play tomorrow in Geneva.
Serena wins in Emilia-Romagna Open
-
Federer knocked out by Andujar. Serena knocked out by Siniakova. Feels one of those days when the times they are a changing.
-
Big win for Norrie over Thiem in straight sets. Moves him up to 15 in the ATP Race.
Gauff into semi in Parma moves up to 27 in the provisional WTA Rankings.
-
Norrie into semi finals in Lyon.
Musetti also into semi finals. So Italy's youngsters continue to move up the rankings, though Sinner knocked out.
Gauff into final in Parma.
-
Norrie into the final in Lyon with a crushing win over Kachanov. He will play Tsitsipas who beat Musetti in 3 sets.
Gauff wins in Parma.
-
Tsitsipas beats Norrie in straight sets.
-
Osaka withdraws from the French because of the issue about press conferences. I think it's difficult to say that mental health is taken seriously if this is just seen as Osaka being problematic.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/tennis/57311128
-
So just Norrie left in the Singles from the UK.
Rublev and Thiem out in the Men's.
Kvitova out injured after a freak injury, suffered somewhat ironically given the Osaka situation, doing press duties.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/tennis/57319108

Just to note nice to see Monfils win. He's had a torrid time since tennis returned.

Looking at the ATP rankings, Medvedev has a decent chance of getting to the number 1 ranking in the next few weeks, and could even do it at the French. I doubt outside of tennis fans, very many could name him from a photograph.
-
And Serena out. Down to 2 top ten seeds in the women's draw
-
NS, I hope that watching the tennis has been a bit of a distraction from your unwelcome medical news.
I turned on Five Live Fridayevening and listened to the fourth set of men's semifinal, then turned off. turned back on a bit later and since the match had obviously finished, I assumed Jokavic had won.
I have just listened to the end of the Final's first set tie break, so will wait for a while before turning on again.
-
Thank you, Susan Doris. For once I didn't see too much of the end of the French as we had a packed weekend away
I see Djokovic has mentioned the possibility of the Golden Slam which would I think make him the easiest argument in the male game for being the GOAT. It feels incredibly unlikely still.
Great win by Draper over Sinner yesterday.
-
Excellent win from Evans. Murray up next, tough match against Paire.
-
And it's a very odd match, crowd have gone flat as Paire is playing almost disinterestedly, but it's not easy to play against as it feels like a practice session. Paire is doing a lot of very good drop shots which is giving Murray's hips and groin a good work out.
-
Paire just not playing for this. He's just given a point to Murray that was called out, but was in. He and Kyrgios are similar in being outrageously talented but not having the strongest mental approach. I do wonder if there might be some idea of him having some of the money being taken away as a fine, which would be a shame.
Murray wins 6-3 6-2
Berettini - the number 1 seed next
-
Excellent win from Evans. Murray up next, tough match against Paire.
I heard Murray's name mentioned briefly but I forgot to find out more. Interesting to hear that Evans is continuing to do well.
-
Draper and Norrie playing this afternoon at Queen', lots of British interest in the doubles. Quite fun yesterday to hear John Lloyd jokingly complain about no longer being the last British person to win the mixed doubles at the French Open with Joe Salisbury winning last week.
Intriguing match at Halle with Federer playing Auger Aliassime
-
De Minaur looking good, could do well this week and Wimbledon
-
Win for Norrie over Karatsev. Played well but Karatsev had a fall that seemed to give him a problem but Norrie was already up a set and a break.
-
Federer loses in 3 sets to Auger Aliassime.
-
Draper wins. The memories of Andy Murray's emergence at Queen's are triggered.
-
Good day for British men in the singles at Queen's, bad day in the doubles with only Norrie progressing, and that on a match where Salisbury was on the other side.
-

Interesting article.
-
Evans wins, Murray loses. Berrettini played well but unusually high number of unforced errors from Murray. Moved well but looks unsurprisingly rusty.
-
And Osaka not playing Wimbledon. There is going to be huge pressure on her if she plays in the Olympics

-
The rain halting the tennis at at Queen's so BBC showing King Kong (original version)
-
Berrettini, De Minaur, and Norrie through. Evans and Draper out
-
Really enjoying the Berrettini vs De Minaur match
-
Norrie into final. Great performance. Possible chance of being seeded at Wimbledon
-
Good run for Watson at Birmingham to reach the semi final and losing to Jabeur is no shame.
-
Berrettini beats Norrie in 3 sets. Great week of tennis. I do love Queen's as a tournament.
-
Watched a few matches at Eastbourne. Can see another surprise happening in the women's singles at Wimbledon.
-
Andy Murray selected for the Olympics. Can see the logic in the singles given he is the defending champion but struggling to see why he is selected above his brother in the doubles.

Djokovic breaks

And breaks again
-
Djokovic wins 2nd set
-
3rd set Djokovic who is turning this into a tennis lesson.
-
And Djokovic wins. Good performance by Draper. And it will give him a bit of an aura on the ITF and Challenger circuit as there will rarely be any other players there who can say they have taken a set off Djokovic, never mind on Centre Court.

That was interesting - reading the e-mails all together was like having a condensed commentary. Well done, that Draper chap!
-
Tiafoe beats 3rd seed in the men's, Tsitsipas. Great performance.

And Stephens puts the 2 time women's champion and 10th seed, Kvitova out in straight sets. Kvitova looked flat. Stephens is a former US Open champion but has been put of form for sometime.

And Venus Williams wins at the age of 41
-
Federer 2 sets to 1 down against Mannarino
-
If Federer loses here, I suspect it will be his last match at Wimbledon
If he wins, and he's just broken Mannarino it will be a great fightback
-
Mannarino back after ugly looking slip but moving very gingerly
-
2 sets all.
-
And Mannarino too injured to carry on.
-
Serena retires with injury. Is that the last time we see her at Wimbledon?
-
Big win for Kyrgios over Humbert who won Halle last week
-
De Minaur looking good, could do well this week and Wimbledon
Well this didn't age well with De Minaur knocked out in 1st round at Wimbledon. Knocked out by Sebastian Korda who is having a great breakthrough season. Son of Petr Korda who won the Australian Open, and brother to Nelly Korda who has just won the US Women's PGA golf major.
-
Not been great tourney for the young Italians with both Sinner and Musetti knocked out first round. I will note that Alcaraz, a young Spaniard is through and looking good.
But if you combined Musetti and Sinner's ages ypu would be 3 years under Venus Williams' age, and she's been knocked out today by Jabeur. As with Serena, it may be the last time we see here at Wimbledon. Indeed I think that's pretty well certain. Sad changing of the guard.
-
And Murray gets back to 2 sets all.
-
And he wins. But cannot see him beating Shapovalov next
-
I turned on FiveLive and listened to a bit of the third set, then turned off. turned on again later and it was 2-0 in the fifth set, so I had to listen to the end.
-
Watching what I presume is near the finish in Federer vs Gasquet, with what looks like a certain Federer win. Must be a good chance this is the last of Gasquet at Wimbledon. What a beautiful backhand he has!
-
Huge win for Radacanu. Three British men in 3rd round. Looking forward to Norrie vs Federer
-
Loving the Jabeur v Muguruza match
-
I'm just wondering whether I'll be able to listen all the way through the Andy Murray match this evening! I'd like him to win of course, but if he does not, I think it will not be too agonising as he did so well to get here!
-
Evans out. Korda emerging as a bit of a star.
-
Murray out in straight sets, and that doesn't seem a surprise.
-
Murray out in straight sets, and that doesn't seem a surprise.
He was up against a very strong player but considering his circumstances - the artificial hip - has done wonders to get this far in the competition.
-
Murray out in straight sets, and that doesn't seem a surprise.
The result could not have been otherwise really, but no matter, Murray has not made a fool of himself; on the contrary, I think he has probably earned some new fans too.
However, I had to turn over to the football occasionally because there was a silly female commentator who really spoilt it for me, gabbling on about what he should or shouldn't doo and not shutting up when the pplayers were serving. I got the impression that even Russell Fuler (it was him, wasn't it?) was beginning to get annoyed with her. Far too keen on the sound of her own voice and probably forgetting that people listening to Five Live might well be doing so because they cannot watch TV at the same time. *frown*

She. Emma Radacanu, 18, wildcard entry, beat Sorana Cirstea to get into the 4th round.
Ah, yes, thank you. She is the one who only took her A-levels recently, is she? Well done indeed.
-
And Federer beats Norrie in 4 sets. First couple of sets thought Norrie was slightly off his game. Sonego up next for Federer.
-
4 walkovers in the Mixed Doubles. I get why Williams and Kyrgios pulled out, Kyrgips's injury that meant he pulled out while playing Auger Alissime, but it's a large number on one day
-
Radacanu retires injured
-
I don't follow much tennis, but there do seem to be a higher number of retirements than usual, this year. Is it the condition of the courts, I know there were some comments earlier in the tournament, or are there competitors who haven't had the usual run of events coming into Wimbledon to get up to match fitness? Or just happenstance?
O.

It's difficult to tell. Some like Konta may be affected by Track and Trace. There was a bit at the start where the grass seemed to have an effect but that is less apparent now. The match practise thing depends on who but we also lost a week between the French and Wimbledon as a gap, and that makes the change from clay to grass harder. There's also an impact of ranking points still having some extra protection because of Covid that means most players are less likely to worry about pulling out.
ETA Radacanu's withdrawal was because of breathing difficulties, so it would seem to he very specific, though there are many possible causes.
-
6 players new to the quarter finals in the men's with some good young players in Shapovalov, Auger Aliassime. Good to see those players who promised previously Berrettini, Khachanov, and Hurkacz and a bit of a surprise in Fucsovics. And yet, and yet Federer and particularly Djokovic.
-
The nonsense spouted by Piers Morgan and Kevin Pietersen about Raducanu was deeply unpleasant.
Odd that in what has been seen as an incredibly open tournament in the women's that we have the top 2 seeds, Barty and Sabalenka, a two time Wimbledon champion, Kerber, and a former world number 1, Pliskova
-
Djokovic into his 41st Slam semi final. Still don't think he's played his best here yet.

Djokovic into his 41st Slam semi final. Still don't think he's played his best here yet.

Hurkacz takes first set against Federer
-
Federer breaks 2nd game 2nd set.

Hurkacz breaks back 7th game 2nd set

Into 2nd set tiebreak

Which Hurkacz wins. Federer just looking a bit off though unfortunate to slip in the tie break
-
Which Hurkacz wins. Federer just looking a bit off though unfortunate to slip in the tie break
Thank you for the running commentary - I'm turning off computer now, but will turn on Five Live instead!
-
Hurkacz breaks in second game 3rd set. Federer's forehand has been a bit off all the way through the tournament. This is as bad as it's been. There is s very strong possibility that we are watching his las match at Wimbledon now.
-
And Hurkacz breaks again. I saw Connors fightback from 2 sets 5-1 down against Pernfors but Connors wasn't 39 coming back from major surgery.
-
5-0 Hurkacz. I fear this is the end of Federer at Wimbledon as do tye crowd. Thanks for all the memories
-
That's it. 6-0.
-
I do wonder if we might even hear of Federer retiring today or tomorrow. He's always very considered but losing that last set 6-0 must hurt. It's never happened to him at Wimbledon.
-
I do wonder if Federer might announce retirement on Monday after final. Berettinni into semi final.
-
I remember years ago there used to be a series of events for the 'oldies', the sort of veterans circuit! Does this still happen - when covid 19 is not around to spoil everything?

Yes, the 'Legends' competitions still occur in nornal times.
-
Berrettini beats Hurkacz. In 4 sets. Hurkacz went walkabout from the middle of the first set to the start of the third.
-
Djokovic takes first set despite Shapovalov being the best player for most of the set.
-
Shapovalov's back hand is a thing of beauty.
-
And yet the nerves get to him and a double fault to give up the break.
-
And Djokovic takes 2nd set. Still don't think he's playing his best.
-
And he takes the 3rd .
-
And he takes the 3rd .
I heard the final score on FiveLive but it was obviously very close.
-
I heard the final score on FiveLive but it was obviously very close.
As was mentioned in the commentary, Djokovic can win by just doing enough. He played the big pints better than he played on average, Shapovalov played them worse than he played on average.
-
Two interesting and intriguing finals rather than great.
In both there were very few times where both players played their best at the same time. In both, the underdog fought back from a nervous start. In both the favourite did enough to win.
Djokovic is a player I admire rather than love but he keeps delivering. Hitting the same number as Federer and Nadal in slams, he looks like he will then move the number on. A win at the US would be extraordinary.

I heard quite a lot of the last set and it seemsfair and right that Jokavic won

Andy Murray up against Auger Aliassime tomorrow. I fear the end of his 9 year reign as Olympic champion

Abd beaten by that tough competitor, thigh strain.

Norrie wins his first ATP title in Los Cabos
-
Murray and Salisbury into the quarter finals. Osaka out.
-
Big win for Broady over Hurkacz in the Olympics second round
-
Murray and Salisbury out. and Broady out as well. So no medals in tennis for UK. Nishikori is through to last 8, so maybe there is a fairytale for Japan in the men's.
ETA: Just had a look at the draw, and he's playing Djokovic next.

-
Easy win in Atlanta for Norrie over Kyrgios.

Djokovic out, beaten by Zverev from being a set and a break down. Plays Kachanov in final.

Only Konta left in the singles for the UK in the Canadian Open with a tough match against Svitolina later today.

In the Western and Southern Open, the four top seeds have made the men's semi finals, Medvedev, Tsitsipas, Zverev, and Rublev. While Djokovic has skipped this one, it feels as if thos may be a fairly common line up infuture, with Thiem if he returns from injury and depression, and Berrettini, Shapovaliv, Ruud, Hurkacz, and Sinner, the obvious other contenders. Can't see this being a period where there is a big 3 or 4 hoovering up all the slams. That doesn't mean, of course, that Djokovic won't complete the calendar slam but I suspect if he does he might find it harder to motivate himself - rather as he did after completing the Nole Slam.
Elsewhere Raducanu is into the semi final in Chicago.
-
Obviously plenty of interesting tennis going on. The sets of new top names are becoming a little more familiar now.
-
Zverev wins in Cincinnati, making him tye 2nd favourite to Djokovic for the US Open.
Raducanu loses in 3 sets to Tauson who is actually a month younger than Raducanu.
Murray wins easily in first round of Winston Salem, harder match against Tiafoe next.

As far as I can see, it looks as if Murray came back from 5-1 down in the second set? Anyway, it will be interesting to see how he does in the Us Open.
Well done to Evans.

And Serena Williams pulls out of the US Open.

Evans beaten by Gasquet. Venus Williams pulls out of US Open as well as Serena.
-
Tough draw for Murray against Tsitsipas. Norrie's draw also tough against the fast rising Spaniard Alcaraz who is in the semi finals at the Winston-Salem tournament today. Evans draw looks easier with Monteiro but he's not been on form on hard court swing.
Konta drawn with Mladenovic which would be tough anyway without the doubts around her fitness. Watson has a winnable match against Juvan.
Raducanu, Dart and Boulter all in the final round of qualifying today.

Murray out in 5 sets, but not a happy bunny.

I have read the article - Murray certainly seems to have a justified complaint and his opponent's words sound a bit weasely. Hmm

Raducanu and Evans only UK players left in singles.

This is an interesting fact:

I turned on FiveLive just in time to hear the last two points of Raducanu's win!
-
Another huge, and hugely impressive win for Raducanu. Up to a provisional 74 in the rankings. If she wins the quarter final, she will be the number one ranked UK woman.
-
Looking at the women's quarter finals and despite a number of top seeds, 2, 4, 5, 8, 11, being in, none of the women have won a slam before.
-
Not surprisingly in the men's, of those in the quarter finals, only Djokovic has won a slam. At the start of the tournament only Murray and Cilic were other Slam winners. Some intriguing match ups with a repeat of the Wimbledon final between Djokovic and Berrettini, a clash of the young in Auger Aliassime finding himself unusually the older player, against Alcaraz.
Amazing performances by Van de Zandschulp, who I watched play an excellent match against Berrettini at Wimbledon. He's having a great year.

Luckily, I turned on the radio just at the start and listened all the way through; definitely a very good mmatch and mostly good comentating, but annoying when they talk about irrelevant things during the first serve and so on. Do they think we are all watching as well as listening?!!

I listened to the whole match! Amazing! Russell Fuller and the female commentator from New York are brilliant - you don't miss a stroke - but Dave something and Naomi something, commentating from the Come Dancing studio, are extremelyk irritating because they seem to assume that those listening are also watching and they talk statistics etc over the serve and although they do describe maybe most of the shots, I'd really like to remind them firmly that some people listen because they cannot watch. *deep sigh*
I shall certainly be listening to the Final on Saturday.

I not sure if I heard this correctly - but I think they said on the radio that this was the first time a qualifier (male or female) had ever made it to the final of a gand slam tournament. Like, ever!! If that is correct that is quite an achievement regardless of whether or not she wins.

These people seem to think so:

So often these types of achievements are 'caveated' - but if she is genuinely the first, man or woman, to reach a final as a qualifier that is quite amazing.

I think they are wrong about the 3 victories stat, as I think the Chicago tournament where she reached the final is a WTA 125 tournament and so her victories there count but agree that the overall stat is correct and quite amazing.

Thanks, Trent. Emma is a lovely player to watch, incredible speed across the court and great defence techniques. Amazing, as people are saying, for one so young. What is exciting is she has years ahead of her and for us all to enjoy.

An amazing achievement by Emma Raducanu !

I think that’s BBC SPotY nailed on.

I think that’s BBC SPotY nailed on.

Indeed. But I hope that she does not abandon the rest of her time and youth to tennis. She is clearly intelligent - it would be good for her to ensure that her further intellectual development is not sacrificed to her sporting achievements. Perhaps, in a couple of years time, she could take a sabbatical from her sporting life at one of our fine universities.
-

I think that is unlikely. As a sport it does seem to consume the individuals. Once you're on the merry go round very difficult to get off.
-
I'm delighted that Emma Raducanu is a British player, but I cannot find the answer as to why she is British. Her father was born in Rumania and her mother in China and there is no indication that her father is a naturalised Briton. Am I right in assuming therefore that her birth in Canada automatically gives her British citizenship?
Just curious.
-
Why should you not accept that her parents settled in the UK and at the appropriate time decided to take British citizenship? if they considered that their futures would involve staying in the United Kingdom then acquiring British citizenship would be a natural coursr to follow.
As for Emma, she will have no recollection of her life in Canada and will be aculturated English. She is very fortunate to come from such a diverse background. She speaks at least three languages.
-
From Wikipedia:
"As a child, she participated in various sports and activities, including golf, karting, motocross, skiing, horse riding, tap dancing and ballet. She is a fan of Formula One.
Raducanu holds both British and Canadian citizenship. She speaks Mandarin, watches Taiwanese television shows and enjoys Romanian cuisine, courtesy of her Bucharest-based grandmother. "
I hope she can be symbol of unity rather than being 'claimed' by nationalities.
-

If she wants to be the best she can be at tennis, that is unrealistic.
And so what? She's got maybe 20 years of playing tennis if injury doesn't get her first. There will be plenty of time for intellectual development after that.
-

She's lived in Britain since she was two. I think that should be enough.

Okay, but if the international aspect is the one to emphasise, why the constant reference to her being a brit?!
I think it is wonderful that nowadays so many relationships are multi-cultural etc, and I am so glad I have visited so many countries for longish periods of time so that I can get am understanding of the way of life there, and, as JeremyP says, it doesn't make a difference to her sporting skill and her supreme talent for tennis, and to have several languages at your fingertips is to be mightily encouraged but I was just curious as to the reason for her nationality.
ETA: Nationality still tends to be taken from the father. Is he a Rumanian or a Briton? No, it doesn't matter, but why shouldn't I be slightly curious, especially with all the details of Emma's life being made public and being of much interest to all.
-
Okay, but if the international aspect is the one to emphasise, why the constant reference to her being a brit?!
Good question. She is not representing there UK in most of the tournaments she plays in. I think it's just that people use nationality as one criterion for deciding who to support.
and, as JeremyP says, it doesn't make a difference to her sporting skill
Actually, where you live can have a huge effect on your sporting skill. For example, if you live in the USA as a child, you are unlikely to become a great cricket player. A fair number of top UK rugby players learned their rugby in New Zealand. Where you live as a child determines what sports are available to you and the quality of the coaching available.
-

Why are you so concerned about this? Given the circumstances it seems likely that Emma'a parents have acquired British citizenship and in doing so ensured that their daughter did too.
-
Okay, but if the international aspect is the one to emphasise, why the constant reference to her being a brit?!
...
People always heap all their hope, fears, successes and failures onto those who they think (mostly incorrectly) are representing them - if she succeeds they succeed, if she fails it is sad but it's due to her own deficiencies or bad luck.
My spin class leader is the exact image of Raducanu except that she is about 10 years older and olde-english white - not brown. They both look similar to thousands of Indian girls/women too. Despite tens of thousands of years of dispersal around the world and a possible couple of thousand generations, humans are not very diverse.
Tennis players do not represent nations but for those waving national statistics ancestry is irrelevant and only the legal nationality counts. In fact we could easily, and correctly, state that both in the final were Canadians.
-

Raducanu has got dual citizenship, although, as she learned to play tennis in the UK, we have a slightly better spurious claim to her than Canada.
-
Why are you so concerned about this? Given the circumstances it seems likely that Emma'a parents have acquired British citizenship and in doing so ensured that their daughter did too.
I am not in the least "concerned" as you put it. I just like to know what's what and if I think of a question, I like to know the answer; the true answer, not some randomobfuscating or intending to be put off, one.
-

She is both UKish and Canadian in that she has dual citizenship. It's her claim. Anything beyond that concerninv 'spurious' sounds a bit Farage.
-
I must admit I find the notion of nationality to be far less important for individual sports. Sure we might get excited about Murray or Raducanu as they are a rare thing - british and successful. But beyond that I think we tend to like, or dislike, players on the basis of their type of play and their personality.
And actually on Raducanu I think there has been too much emphasis on the 'caveated' first british woman grand slam champion for 40+ years etc, when no caveat is needed. Realistically (and probably not exaggerating) Raducanu's achievement is the greatest rise from nowhere ever in tennis. Full stop. No need to caveat by nationality. No need to caveat by sex. Just the greatest - no other qualifier has even reached a final of a grand slam, let alone won it. And her WTA tour debut was in June. From what I can see she has only played in four proper WTA tour events.
-
She is both UKish and Canadian in that she has dual citizenship. It's her claim. Anything beyond that concerninv 'spurious' sounds a bit Farage.
She claims British and Canadian nationality and that is a true claim.
Our claim to her is spurious. We don't own her. Almost none of us contributed anything to her victory.
-
I must admit I find the notion of nationality to be far less important for individual sports.
Agreed.
First qualifier to win a major. That's all we need.

I've not seen any of the actual tennis, just the results, but it's good to see him getting back into something like his stride. I don't know if he'll hit the heights he once did, I get the impression from the interviews that he doesn't think he will, though he's going to try.
O.

I think he's being realistic in just not knowing. No one has comeback at the same standard in singles after this type of surgery. He's 34 which once upon a time was old in tennis terms. The matches I've watched since he returned including the first round in Moselle, he's been almost there. The highs are as high but they are less frequent, and the lows are more frequent. It looks to me as much mental as physical but that may be as much about match practice in both cases. The problem for Murray, and indeed Nadal and Djokovic, now is that their games are hugely based around fitness. Federer has lasted as long as he has at the top because it's a less brute force style. He's always looked to win points more quickly.

I'm not sure I've ever seen someone in sport make the rest of the best in the world look quite as mediocre as Federer in his prime - his ability to read the shot before it was made gave him so much time to get into the right position and it was just effortless. Even to an occasional tennis fan it was an opportunity to just glimpse something verging on superhuman.
O.

I love Federer's play but he's rarely managed to make Nadal look mediocre, and certainly never on clay where I think Nadal's claim to be the GOAT is unarguable.
For a sportsperson who made others look mediocre that would be Bolt for me.

So the qualification for the WTA finals on 10-17 Nov is nearly set. Barty has pulled out because of issues about quarantining for the Australian Open.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/tennis/59020784
That leaves the qualifiers as Sabalenka, Krejčíková, Plíšková, Sakkari, Świątek, Muguruza, and Badosa Gibert. There is a place up for grabs following Barty's withdrawal which will either to Jabeur, or Kontaveitt if Kontaveitt wins the tournament in Cluj this week.
The year end rankings will be distorted from this as the 2019 Asian swing tournament still remain in the rankings as they were cancelled both 2020, and 2021. This means we won't have WTA rankings that match the Race until this time next year.
Raducanu is playing in Cluj - not surprisingly given her Romanian father- and is also due to play in Linz next week. If she were to win both tournaments , she would finish the year's Race in 11th but her ranking would be 16th.
-
And Murray beats Hurkacz after two previous tough matches against him since his return. This also does Norrie a favour since Hurkacz is one of the players above him in the ATP Race to qualify for the Year End. The question for Norrie is can he take advantage which will be dependent on how he adjusts his outdoor form to indoors.

Exciting day in the ATP Race with Ruud, Sinner, and Norrie all chasing points in Vienna to be 2 out of 4 qualifiers, along with Hurkacz who was knocked out by Murray. It's most likely that it will be 2 of those 4 but the next in line is Auger-Aliassime who plays Norrie.

Norrie wins, but Evans and Murray out. With Karatsev knocked out, the Year end tournament last places are between Ruud, Sinner, Hurkacz, Norrie, and Auger Aliassime. Auger Aliassime would need to win the tournament to qualify. Hurkacz and Norrie need to get to at least the quarter finals to have a chance at qualification. If Ruud and Sinner win their next matches, then Hurkacz and Norrie would at least need to reach the semifinals.

I've been a bit remiss in covering the end of year events for a variety of reasons so this is a longer post with some thoughts about next year as well.
In the ATP Next Generation tournament, Alcaraz beat Korda in the final. It's been a great year for Alcaraz who looks likely to be the next big Spanish star. Of the other players, Musetti does not seem to have kicked on this year after already playing last year. Interesting to note that both Sinner and Auger Aliassime qualified but chose not to take part but to play in the Copenhagen tournament. With Sinner being an alternate for the ATP Finals, I think that made a lot of sense. For Auger Aliassime, I suspect the lure of ranking points was conclusive. I get why the Next Generation has a set up with first to 4 games winning a set, and that means no ranking points but I feel that it may lead to more players following Auger Aliassime in the future.
For the WTA Finals, Muguruza beat Kontaveit, who has been the standout of the late season, in the final. 5 of those who qualified were first time players in the Finals, mainly influenced by the cancellation last year due to Covid, and Barty not playing this year to make sure she can play the Australian Open. There's also so much movement and competitiveness in the women's rankings though. In any other year, Krejčíková's French Open win by a doubles specialist would have been the big upset, but then Raducanu won the US. The Australian will be fascinating with Barty seeking to be the first Australian woman to win it since 1977. Also will be interesting to see if Osaka returns and defends her title.
In the ATP Finals, Zverev beat Medvedev to win his second year end. Odd year for Zverev who looked mentally suspect up until the second set in the semi final in the Olympics against Djokovic, and since then has seemed a different playe, removing his double fault problem. I saw a picture of some of the contestants before the tournament and Djokovic at 6'2' looked short in comparison. There definitely is a move to players of 6'5' to 6'6' as the norm in the new generation.
The big question for next year for the men will be this the year that that new generation starts dominating slams. First up is the Australian which if Djokovic were to win would mean 21 Slams, a record, and a 10th Australian, and yet it's not even certain he will play because of vaccination rules.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/tennis/59356156
There is some tennis before the end of the year with Murray and Raducanu playing in Abu Dhabi in an exhibition event which is also meant to see the return of Nadal.

Elsewhere, of course, is the sad strange story of Peng Shuai

That was very interesting - there are too many names for me to follow but these last two years have certainly changed the routine of many players and rankings, etc.
-
I have to admit I had completely forgotten that the Davis Cup was starting yesterday. With Covid cancellation last year the changes, that started in 2019 didn't get a chance to bed in. Spain losing Alcaraz to Covid affects their chances, given they were already without Nadal and Bautista Agut
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/tennis/59422172

Looking at the David Cup teams, Russia look to be the big favourites. They have two in the top 5 in the rankings, no other team has 2 in the top twenty. While they don't have a specialist doubles pairing, not all teams do.
Other than them USA look a good team, Italy look strong, as do the UK. Any team with Djokovic stands a chance. Had Zverev played, then Germany would look good but he isn't. Note if Berrettini was fit, Italy would look even stronger.
-
Italy win both singles against US. Very very easy win for Sinner over Isner

UK into quarter finals in Davis Cup
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/tennis/59450633
Sounds good.
-
So the quarter finals in the Davis Cup are:
Russian Tennis Federation vs Sweden which looks like an easy win for the Russians
UK vs Germany should be won by the UK but Evans is looking vulnerable, if it comes down to the doubles both UK and Germany have 2 doubles specialists in team but neither is a normal partnership
Italy vs Croatia which you would expect the Italians to win both singles BUT Croatia have the number 1 ranked doubles team in the world in Mektić and Pavić so there is an element of extra pressure the singles
Serbia vs Kazakhstan and though Serbia qualified via the best runners up spot, they feel more likely to go through since Djokovic should get a win.
-
So Gojo, the world 279, has beaten Sonego, the world 27, putting Croatia 1-0 up against Italy, and given the doubles makes them favourites to make the semi finals.
-
So Sinner managed to beat Cilic in 3 sets, but Mektić and Pavić won as expected so Italy are out.
-
I hope the British team get to the semi-finals , if not the final.

If they get past Germany, then it is likely that the favourites, the Russian Tennis Federation, will be their opponents in the semi final.
