Apparently, he was offered command of a later mission, but declined the opportunity to walk on the Moon to give another the chance. His modesty did him credit.

There is a excellent BBC Podcast (available on the BBC sounds app) called '13 Seconds to the Moon' which gives a detailed account of the Apollo 11 (first series) and Apollo 13 (second series) missions and includes interviews with many of those directly involved, and are well worth a listen.

Episode 7 of the first series is about Michael Collins.
