Tone deaf. Says fuck off to the SDLP..

And that is all he should have said. Or, at least, repeated that same phrase ad infinitum.

Why do you think it is "tone deaf"? Do you think the majority of Labour supporters and people who could be persuaded to vote Labour want Northern Ireland to rejoin Ireland and Keir Starmer should be pandering to them? Do you think Keir Starmer has calculated (or guessed) that he would get more votes if he supported keeping the Union intact? Is it impossible that he has analysed the situation and decided that NI and the rest of the Union are better off if they stick together?

Because it alienates the SDLP,. Because it alienates a substantial part of his own party, and not just the part he alrwady has. Because even with the vacuous betrayal of the Unionists by Johnson and the Tories, Labour won't pick up many Tory votes because the polls indicate that English voters don't give a fuck.

If that's his analysis, he needs to do more analyising. His branch in Scotland is tied in knots over the constitution, hopelerssly split over the future. If he tries to impose some doctrine of unity on the cracking shell of his Scottish branch, he risks it fragmenting. Mind you; not involving himself is a mistake the Scottish Labour leadership (what's left of it) has been making over the last three and a bit years. Damned if he does.......

And saying he would support NI becoming part of the Republic of Ireland would similarly alienate a substantial part of his own party. So the 'political' thing would be to simply sit on the fence. But he hasn't done that - maybe it is because he genuinely wants NI to remain part of the UK.

Given the sectarian drivel in that part of Ulster known as NI, I wouldn't blame them for having nothing to do with them.

Whether NI stays in the UK is none of the Republic's business, either. If NI eventually leaves, then it may choose to enter discussions with the Republic about reunification, and that's when it becomes the Republic's business.

Steve is correct. The issues of whether NI should be allowed to leave the UK and whether they should be allowed to join the Republic of Ireland are different issues. The GFA seems to support that saying "...Northern Ireland in its entirety remains part of the United Kingdom and shall not cease to be so without the consent of a majority of the people of Northern Ireland voting in a poll held for the purposes of this section in accordance with Schedule 1"
