I suspect the phrasing of the study may be more circumspect than the report.

There is a considerable body of evidence that chimpanzees can acquire "human" language by means of sign language.

The best known example is Washoe, a female chimp who, at an early age, was "adopted" by a researcher and her family and taught American Sign Language. She acquired over 500 words and could converse with her family, She could even talk about feelings and be empathetic.
