Barbie shows us that, if it is well written, it can be quite good.
If it's true to the game, it will be obvious where the story is going in the first ten minutes and then there will be four hours of grind in which all the joy is sucked out of the souls of everybody watching.

I'm not criticising the approach, though I think Barbie was much easier to see a way to a plot than Monopoly as playing with Barbie is about creating stories in a much more open way. The rules based aspect of Monpoly seems antithetical to that and the metaphors a bit limited but a maybe there's a way to make it work.
I agree with your characterisation of Monopoly.
