I had never heard of a free drink refill before.

I had never heard of a free drink refill before.
You get them mainly in fast food joints where the draw of the gimmick is deemed to outweigh the extra cost.

I first became aware of free refills the first time I went to America, where it was practically standard for diners to offer free coffee refills.
