This is a good article covering the impact algorithms have on what we see on social media, and how that effectively means that what appears to be free speech ends up being controlled.

To be fair, it's just that we look at these issues more closely than we did with things like print and video media. Or perhaps we were more willing to accept that we were making a conscious choice in what paper to but, whereas here it's done for us.
