Dear Posters,
Instead of me waffling on about the subject why not a brief introduction into the world of Meditation from a real qualified Doctor, a beginners guide❤️

I enjoyed a Christian based meditation one where every breath you breathed out comprised the bad things you have done today, and every breath you breathed in comprised God's forgiving grace.

Dear Alan,
Nice my friend very nice, and the breathing is central to the Meditation I practice, Anapanasati, which simply means Anapana "inhale exhale" sati "the mind" being mindful of your breathing, your breathing is your focus,
I have not got that far to start bringing scripture into my Meditation but I will, I have only been practicing on and off for a year ( practice the key word ) I am simply content to reach a stage where I feel that my mind is empty of thought, but I am a firm believer that any kind of Meditation, simply sitting quietly being in the moment is good for you.
Namaste ( I bow to you )

I have practiced a form of Transcendental Meditation for many years.
I am aware that there is no real evidence of benefits regarding anxiety or health, so it is not something I promote or encourage in others, but it works for me. If nothing else it gives me a 20-minute period of calm and silence, which for me is beneficial by its very nature. I would claim it does much more than that but that is only my personal experience.

Dear Arun,
Your personal experience I think would be helpful❤️
A personal experience, I was laid up in hospital, fractured thigh I could not sleep, tried everything, reading, watching boring telly but then I remembered I had a 15 minute guided Meditation on my phone, after listening to it I was in a different frame of mind, what was I fretting about you have had sleepless nights before, next thing I remember was the Nurse waking me at 3 o'clock in the morning to check my blood pressure ( why the hell do they do that ). I now use it when I am restless and sleep eludes me ;)
Transcendental Meditation, from what I know of it a Mantra is involved, is the Mantra personal or is it something taught.

The mantra is personal to you and in the form I follow should not be shared with anyone.

Dear Arun,
Thank you.

Dear Gonnagle,
Scripture based meditation can be very enlightening and give unexpected results.
I was attending a retreat in which we were asked to read through a Bible passage, then go to a quiet place in the church and re live the Bible story, inviting the Holy Spirit to guide you into being one of the characters in the story. In my meditation I was a bystander waiting for Jesus to come along when I saw a camel being led past. Not only did I see the camel, but I smelt it! Never having smelt a camel before it was quite a unique experience.

Which leads me to a question - how do you know it really was a camel smell? :P

Dear Alan,
Beautiful, now I am no expert but I would say you were in a deep meditative state, when the sub conscious takes over, and I am very jealous, this deep meditative state, I think has only happened to me twice, once it was Christs St John of the cross, my favourite painting and it also hangs in one of my favourite places, nothing especially special about that but the other the weird one, wait for it, I thought I was looking at the inside of my head, I thought I saw my brain working.
And yes I know what your thinking, seek help Gonnagle :) but both times, hard to explain but the word curiosity, a why.

The smell got stronger as it approached, so I presumed it must have been either the camel or the person leading it - I opted for the camel!

I think the point was a that, if you've never smelled a real camel, how can you know that what you smelled was what a real camel smelled like?

Dear Ad,
Hello old friend I hope you are well ;) Yes meditation is very good aid in helping you into slumber land, I to suffered greatly as my mind at times would not shutup, and meditation practiced properly does just that, I think ( me ) that is one of its fundamental qualities.
It does have other uses, passing exams, helping you with stressful situations and for me having a wee chat with God, I really do think the Kingdom of God is within us.
But for me not only meditation but a routine, if I am working the next day, the telly goes off at 21.30 hrs, computer is turned off, phone, I pick my book up and before I know it my eyes are very heavy, but it took me about a month to get into that habit, it works for me ;)

Well, that's spoiled a very nice thread. Now we all have to be alert in case we are attacked by demons.
