Use this to introduce yourself.
I'll start I'm an atheist, well more an extreme agnostic as I do not really know there is not a God or Deity. On the basis of mainstream religions I'm an anti-theist as well.
That is not as bad as a it sounds it just means if they were true it would not be something I would follow.
I'm also a liberal, so freedom of speech, freedom of expression and of course freedom of religion all very important values to me.
Always interested in trying to understand people and hearing the other sides position.
-
Hi jakswan,
I was an atheist for many years but became interested in meditation and Buddhism. From this perspective I can now see much of value in Christianity, though it is a rather idiosyncratic religion compared to Buddhism.
I'm probably not a 'proper' Christian but I attend a Christian meditation group and often go to church. I'm a great fan of Karen Armstrong.
-
I am 61, female, agnostic, homemaker, carer for my disabled husband, mother to five( three birth daughters and two adopted boys with special needs all adults) and granny to five.
I am also a digital artist, poet, writer and glitter stone creator.
-
Hi Jackswan
I'm one on the BBC site junkies and I'm glad you've started this. I kept the same User name and hopefully others will come over from there and continue in the same vein.
I'm an athiest, retiring later this year and I spend far too much time playing the banjo!

Literature (nearly got a degree), Like Beckett, Wordsworth, etc.
And ............motorbikes!

I'm a devout Christian - sorry if that sounds pretentious! Left the BBC Boards some months ago as there was far too much hassle, and I found myself rising to the bait too often.
I'm a teacher (history, RE, games), animal lover; cricket fanatic, and enjoy reading, music, computers, and lively discussion on any subject.
-
Hello everyone, used the BBC forums, it is annoying that they are closing.
I'm a Christian, though an agnostic to my pupils, yes I'm a teacher by the wrath of God!
I like music, especially old grunge, cats and history too, hence my username.
-
Hi everyone
I am Trentvoyager on the BBC board - so no change there. I'm an atheist (or maybe like jakswan an extreme agnostic :D )- but I think of a softer variety than some you may encounter.
Over on the BBC I tended to restrict myself to challenging some of the more monstrous views on gay people - due to restrictions on time available during the day it seemed sensible to limit myself. The beauty of forums like these is that you can post all night long if you wish.
I work in the NHS - am 55, happily partnered for over 30 years (I know you get less for murder!). The only thing that really, really upsets me is if you insult Dickens - well that and homophobia.
-
Must... resist... joining... more... forums...
fail.
This does look like it could be a good replacement - the layout is pretty close, but I'll be able to join in on an evening! No more sneaking five minutes at work to get my fix of intelligent debate!
Hi all, and thanks, jakswan.

Hi,
Evans here. Yes, yet another BBC refugee.
57 years of age. A musician and partner to Janet.
Religion: Though officially still browsing, am 99% atheist. I am not an antitheist, though find certain churches (institutions not individuals) offensive.
More importantly, I am a secularist (which maybe even more misunderstood than atheism).
Nice to be here.
Many thanks jakswan. :)

Hi all,
Just looked in to say hello and see what gives. No doubt things will liven up next week! :)

Hi Leonard no doubt they will. :D

I am 58, male, living in India. I have a wife and two grown up kids.
Nice to be here.
Thanks jakswan.
Cheers.

Another DP from the BBC.
(Well done jak for setting this up, hope it takes off.)

Hello, I am also from the BBC site, and happy to see this site setup.
I tend to read more than I post, but sometimes cannot resist.
I am an agnostic atheist.
-
Hi Everyone,
I'm also from the BBC board.
I don't belong to any religion but am not an Athiest.
I am married (27years) and have two now adult children ( Boys).
I enjoy exploring different religions and beliefs and have so far visited an Orthodox Synagogue, a Hindu Temple , a Mosque and a Gurdwara.
I also enjoy visiting churches when abroad and thought the ones in Malta were very impressive with beautiful marble floors.
I am also interested in Geology and have visited various places, including Mount Etna and Teide in Tenerife.
-
I am Abubakar, 54 years old married 4 kids, 2 grandkids work at various forms of security in Bristol.
I am an English Muslim convert/revert of some 20 years.
BBC poster soon to be ex-BBC poster.

Hello All
Feelin_blue here from the beeb CT site, popped in to say hi, and hope to post here too!
Nice format site this, and great to see so many familiars!
About me, I am, 51 years old, married nearly 30 years with 3 grown up kids. Was brought up RC but now have no faith in any gods, so I guess that makes me atheist.
I left work on redundancy 2 years ago, got my allotment quite swiftly after that, having been on the list for 2 years, and have never had time since then to go back to proper work! I class myself as a kept woman, but one who puts food on the table in a literal sense! (And without frequenting street corners!)
Nice to be here, see you all later xx
-
Dear Bashers,
You dog, where have you been, me and your favourite poster have been asking about you ( wee shakey)
Anyway nice to see you are still in the land of the living ;D now go get those atheists, CRY HAVOC AND UNLEASH THE DOGS OF WAR ( okay the rather sarcastic posting )
Gonnagle.

Hi everyone (most of whom I'm already familiar with from the BBC CT).
Not sure how much I'll be contributing yet - have to see how I'm fixed once the BBC boards have closed. Feels a bit more user-friendly than NGL at the moment though ;)
I'm a recently married 42 year old web designer/developer/graphic artist/illustrator living in East Yorkshire. I describe myself as an agnostic atheist, which I often find myself explaining to people (usually believers). I don't consider myself to be an anti-theist, but I am a liberal secularist as I believe that to be the best way for believer and non-believer to live together without one group encroaching unfairly on another. I have a particular problem with the non-inclusive and divisive dogma promoted by some religious groups from both the Christian and Islamic quarters.
Cheers - GM ;)

Morning....
You may know me as the sweary one from NGL/nglr and the infuriatingly obtuse one from the CTMB..... Fuknose what will happen on here... I might just become the quiet, reflective one!!

Hi jakswan
Another ex BBC poster, although not so well established as most others. I have been retired for many years (or should that be re-tyred). Have had practical experience with a number of belief systems but do not identify myself with any. I am inclined towards ignosticism i.e. find it difficult, or not worthwhile, to discuss a 'god' unless it is described first. Although my childhood was influenced by C of E, I have a preference for some Indian schools of thought and Taoist ideas.

Gonny, my friend. I hope you are well. I closed my account with the BBC - I got so frustrated, with the Mods, and certain posters (not Shaky!) I've been on the NGL Forum for a while, but had a hissy fit there too - what it is to be old and grumpy, eh? Hope to stick around here; it seems very promising, and it's open all hours. I have to say, I think it's a good thing the BBC Forum is closing. It was becoming very incestuous and often unpleasant. We can put the world to rights here!!
-
OOPS! Sorry GM, I was responding to Gonny and pressed all the wrong things - a bit out of practice.
-
Hi all....the beeb is all but gone, yet, I have so much left to say. I believe, implicitly, in the...wait for it...'accurate' teaching of Jesus Christ...as he taught it and lived it rather than the ritual methods in use today...which...in my opinion, is more iniquity than truth...never mind...hopefully you will learn much more about this as we go.
-
Hi everyone, good to see familiar names.
Sporadic poster here from BBC board under different guises.
I'm an agnostic atheist and have been since I was able to think for myself. I'm only a baby compared to the majority of you, at the tender age of 26, so be gentle to my foolhardy mind!
Hopefully I can contribute more to this forum since it's open after working hours!
Cheers.

Are y'oroight, tergather?
Hello everyone. I'm Alan as I was on the Christian Topic Message Board ("what was that?", asks someone on 28th June 2011). I think I had been posting there about 4 years. I am an evangelical Christian from Norfolk, having become a Christian (= got saved) at university. Am happily married with 3 grown up kids. I'm currently (as of June 2011) a third of my way through training to become a Reader in the Church of England.
Thank you so much, Jakswan, for setting up this message board. I had intended to try and get away from posting any more, but I'm still hooked. I'm pleased to "see" so many old faces from the CTMB.

Hi all. Just joined from the BBC boards. Only just joined there, mind, so you might not recognise me.
I am an evangelical Christian, and I am an ex-teacher and an ex-civil servant. I'm also, I suppose, ex-middle aged. I studied Theology at university (when not playing rugby and cricket) and have been studying it ever since. Some of you might label me a fundie, though I don't consider myself to be one. I can live with that. My Christian background is Welsh Calvinistic Methodist. I live in Wales, within a mile of where I was born, and in the area where I have lived all but three years of my life.
I hope to be able to follow discussions here and to join in when able but I'll confess ahead of time that I won't be able to be a regular contributor.
Thanks to whoever for setting this up.

Thanks for this, Jackswan,
I'd better make this official.
I'm another ex-CTMBer, though I've only been posting a few months.
I take my Christian Faith seriously, but I try not to take the Church - or life - too seriously.
Interests: Sci-fi/Fantasy, Archaeology, Egyptology, History, Folk music, and general fiction.

Ello all,
FPD straight from the BBC. Pagan, a lady of a certain age (Old enough to have been in love with Donny Osmond as a girl), and from Surrey.
I maybe able to post a little during the day, but will keep a check after work especially, which was something the Beeb didn't allow.
Looking forward to this fresh start on here.

I have to admit I wind people up with my comments sometimes. Not intentional _ but I am the short fuse on a large stick of dynamite. So let me start with an apology. If I annoy you then I have aplogised before hand. Please refer to these terms and conditions in future disputes.
I am Sorry. ;D

Hi everyone.
I have been a long time reader of the BBC boards but never posted on the religion ones. (Used to on the TV etc). When I become more comfortable I have a tendency to babble so the strict keep on topic or be deleted and banned attitude of the Beeb made me decide to stop posting on there. I did enjoy reading my favourite section, The Pagan board, and learned a great deal from the posters there.
So, with that in mind, I hope nobody minds me joining in ;D
-
Hi Everyone,
These boards are good.
My only worry would be that it could stagnate after the initial spurt. I mean to say, after some time, the number of new members coming in could be very less if any at all.... unlike the BBC boards where the general public could always take a peek at any time, lurk around and then join in.
I am not sure how to get around this problem however.
Cheers.

I am 56 years of age been married to my wife Sharon for 26 years/ I am heavily involved with my local church and sing in the chior. I am not a fundalistamist but I strongly believe we should follow what is written in the O.T., this puts me at odds with those who either are or support those who are homosexual.
In my spare time please define that some one I coach a sport. I cannot declare what the sport is due to some who do not accept my views on homosexuality threatening to report me to my sports Governing Body, Suffice to say I both Officiate and Coach in my chosen sport at National Level.

Greetings,
I'm a late thirties agnostic, atheist father of two - my children and I are all on the autistic spectrum somewhere (which, for those of you in the know, means that my wife is both a saint and mentally deranged for taking me on in the first place...)
I work in QA and Health and Safety (yes, even more vilified than Christians, atheists and, increasingly, lawyers...) for a multinational, and am based in rural Hampshire.

Hello everyone,
I'm 27 and an atheist from West yorkshire. I posted on BBC Religion boards for about three and half years, however due to the limited opening times on the boards I was unable to post as often as I liked.
My hobbies include watching sports in particular Football, Rugby League and American Football; I enjoy music listening mostly to alternative music with my favourite bands including System of a Down, Radiohead, Arcade Fire, Metallica, Smashing Pumpkins, the Smiths among others. I'm also interested in science and philosophy although I certainly wish I'd shown more interest in these subjects when I was younger. I also enjoy playing video games in my spare time
I'm also an occasional poster on Rational Skepticism and I have registered on nglreturns
Hopefully this board can generate a decent amount of debate like the old BBC messageboards did.
-
Greetings all! ;D
Like many of you, I too have drifted in with the flotsam & jetsam from the wreckage of that good ol' ship, HMS BBC Religion & Ethics. What was my BBC tag? Well, let's just say there's now a cool breeze refreshing this new forum! 8)
Professionally, I teach children aged 7-11 years, and yes: I freely share my faith with my students. When it comes to faith, I have been called many things over the years - not all complimentary by any means, but I am quite pachydermatous by nature - I like to describe myself as a Messianic Gentile because...
I am a disciple of the Jewish Messiah; I am a Gentile (born in England to non-believing parents).
I believe that the Bible is the written word of GOD, and within it, He said what He meant and meant what He said - no compromise, no concessions - and the Tanakh (O.T.) is as relevant today as it ever was. I believe that no one can come to the Father except via the one and only begotten Son, Yeshua haMashiach, who was born of a virgin, lived a perfect sinless life and freely gave His life as an atoning sacrifice - the Lamb of GOD who takes away the sin of the world, who died once and for all. This same Yeshua is revealed throughout Scripture from Genesis to Revelation. And as He instructed, one must be born-again in order to see and enter the Kingdom of heaven. Any person who rejects Him will die in their sins, the consequence of which is eternal (as Scripture details).
I believe that the modern-day state of Israel is a fulfilment of prophecy, and its immediate future is detailed in the writings of the Nevi'im (Old Testament prophets). The Church is not Israel, and has not replaced it: we Gentiles are grafted in. The so-called 'church' today is in so much of a mess, from the decaying CofE through the evangelical/pentecostal/baptist bunch - too many people have itching ears; the elect are being deceived. Gentlemen, it is time to repent and fill your lamps with oil. The One called the Sar Shalom - the Prince of peace - is coming back in power and glory! Be like the Bereans!
Well, that's my (short) introduction. ;) I'm also a guitarist of some 30 years standing, am mad keen on Land Rovers and (for reasons that I really cannot explain) support Leeds United. Oh yeah, I also believe that atheists are really agnostics in denial.

Name's Ayub, 23, Muslim, and I live in North West London.
Like most I'm also coming from the BBC MB, wasn't on there for as long as some of the others though (only around 1 month and a half), and usualy, but not always, stuck to the Muslim topic section.
I'm a Student so spend a lot of time procrastinating when I should be doing essays, and I kinda got hooked on the BBC MB as a way to do that and still feel like I wasn't totally wasting my time, since at least I got to discuss and hopefully dispell misconceived notions about Islam.
Thank you for setting this up Jakswan

Tuesday morning - and what a strange, flat feeling not to be able to go straight to the BBC CT board! So I came to this one, read new posts on page 4, clicked on page 5 .... 'Internet Explorer cannot display the page', back one, tried again, ditto, tried page 3, same thing, so back to page 4 and pressed 'Reply' and that worked. I'm pretty sure the problem is my computer and, probably, a glitch in my software too.
Anyway, I was wondering: how do I put my e-mail and web site addresses on the members list? I se(hear) there's a column for that. No rush for answer.
So now I'll post this and see if I land up on page 5!

Hi Susan
It's a 'popularity' meter. If someone likes your contributions they can click on the 'applaud' link just beneath your karma rating. If they don't, they can click on the 'smite' link right next to 'applaud'. Your Karma rating will then be adjusted accordingly.
Not to be taken too seriously, although I can see me wearing my 'Smites' as a badge of honour, much like a ne'er-do-well with his collection of ASBOs.

Next navigation-type question. I logged in and left it as 'forever' for time, but when I came back this afternoon, I had to log in again. What did I miss out?
I was talking to Dolphin tech Support this morning about having several internet windows open at the same time. They said, do Ctrl+1 to (or 2, or 3) to go from screen to screen, but it hasn't worked. I've e-mailed them again to find out what I'm issing out, and I know most people would use the mouse, but does anyone here use key strokes to do this?
I have never in fact used this before anyway. I've always done start>I (short cut to internet page) for each window I want, and very rarely have more than three open;and then the Dolphin Cursor usually attaches itself automatically, but it has been quite erratic about that recently and only attaches itself to the first window opened.
-
Hi Susan
What internet browsing software are you using? I use Firefox, but I know this and IE allow tabs rather than keep having to open new windows. Would this work better for you? I usually have about half dozen tabs open at a time, what with facebook, twitter, pharyngula, anything I am looking up, emails etc, but not sure how this would work for you with your screen reader.
Just thought it might be less cumbersome. :)
-
Hi,
Just popped in to say 'Hello' and that it is good to have somewhere to discuss post-BBC.
No surprises that I posted as cherryc on the CBM.
Not sure how often I will be able to contribute - or even if that is a good thing - timewise for me that is!
It might take a while to some of the different functions, but it seems relatively straightforward.
Think that's all for now.

I use IE8 - and all the Dolphin settings are compatible. I did try Firefox(when the BBC changed the way the message boards were set up and before they'd made the quotes in italics, but I'd really have needed to spend so much time learning that I gave up. One of he ngl members was very helpful about this actually.

Susan, if you have several windows open on your PC, you can swap between them in order using Alt plus TAB (ie hold down Alt and press TAB to move to the next window), and in reverse order using Alt plus Shift plus TAB. It may display a thumbnail list of your open windows if you keep Alt held down after the first Alt + TAB.
I've attached a screenshot, with the Alt Tab list highlighted. Hope attachments work!
This cycles through all your open windows, including folders and any other applications, but if you only have IE windows open may be the easiest way.
NB this presumes you are on a PC rather than a Mac!
Hope that helps

Thank you for your reply and the picture. Much appreciated. Yes, I can do Alt+Tab, but that's when I've done start>I each time. The Tech chap said that if I do Ctrl+T when I'm on an internet page, I can open another screen and then do Ctrl+1 or Ctrl+2 to alternate between them.

Hi Susan
I don't know, is my honest, but unhelpful answer. Presumably if you check the 'forever' box a cookie will be placed on your machine to tell the browser what your status should be when you return to the site. If you have strict security settings, then that might stop the cookie being set and you'll need to keep logging in. Other than that, I can't say what might be logging you out of the site. I see Horsethorn has stepped in with the window switching and I can't really add to what he's said.
Cheers for now - GM 8)

Hi Bert,

Did you come here from the Beeb?
-
Hi Susan,
Sorry scratch my last about opening and new window, you're trying to run tabbed browsing. If its not working for you, you need to check its enabled.
Click "Tools" in your browser and then "Internet Options". Click the "General" tab and then the "Settings" button. In the "Tabs" section there should be a checkbox called "Enable Tabbed Browsing". Check this and click ok. That should make CTRL + T work for you.
Hope that helps

Hi Charley here, all I have to say is................Lock and Load!!!! ;D
-
Well I was, then I wasn't, then I was, then I wasn't, then I was, then I wasn't......
Then I was, then I wasn't, then I was, then I wasn't....
but I have. Couldn't resist it in the end. It felt like there was something missing.
Thought I would keep the same moniker, and anyone who has read the Islam topic on the defunked Beeb boards will probably know my views on things.
I don't do organised, controlling religions very well, but don't take me too seriously though. Faceless forums are not good, and I believe if we were face to face over a cuppa it would all be different
Nice to see others here from the BBC fallout and I must say I like the look of the place, more user friendly and if I am seeing things right we can post images etc. Cool.
Let the games begin....

Hi, I'm Hope. I posted very occasionally on a variety of BBC message boards - not just Religion/Philosophy. Have been pointed in this direction by Flower, from a completely different site that has existed in several guises since before the start of this millennium. It was originally established as an off-shoot of Steve Chalke's Oasis organisation, and was - as a result - largely Christian. Over the years, it has maintained a Christian ethos, but sadly, we recently had to move away from a hosting group who had effectively forgotten that we existed, because they were doing a massive reorganisation of their systems. We started again - on this SMF software - only a few weeks ago, but have had lots of disruption and downtime (so don't be surprised if ... )
I am a 55-year old Christian who has worked (as an English and English to Speakers of Other Languages teacher) in the UK, India and Nepal - but I am currently volunteering for a Christian charity called Tools With A Mission (www.twam.co.uk). I enjoy a variety of pastimes, from heritage railways to reading, ornithology to philately, sport to gardening (though my active sports days are all but over as a result of a bad back and dodgy knees). I am an Englishman living (in exile?) in Wales, am married to an Australian who started life as a nurse but has retrained as a chiropodist, and we have two daughters in their 20s, the younger of whom is married and lives in Norfolk.
-
Hi, Hope,
It's good to see you joining the crowd here.
I don't remember meeting you on CTMB, so look forward to dialogue here.
You're bound to be an asset if Flower has recommended you!

Hi all,
Just thought I'd look in and sign up, marginally less bruised and battered as I am now by Wigginhall thumping me into second place in the CTMB beauty parade.
For those not familiar with my oeuvre, agnostic atheist (ie, 99.999% atheist but hey, you never know) formerly a city fat cat type now semi-retired (but don't tell Mrs b) and doing consultancy work as and when. Four children, three cars (I know, I know), lots of guitars (bad classical player but I try), too many bikes to mention and one ruinous Amazon book/cd ordering habit (while bemoaning the closure of bricks and mortar book and cd shops all the while).
Will that do for now?
All best.
-
Garry
Thank you for your advice. I read the second post before trying anything! I find that the 'enable tab' option is checked. What shall I do now?!
I had to sign in again today; anyone kno why? even though the 'forever' option was showing.

Are we only allowed to click on the 'modify' icon once? I was going to add the following to the previous post, i.e. as a second modification, but nothing happened.
I can't find how to put things on my profile. I tried 'modify profile' but the same page came up with no links or spaces to put things as far as I could see.
No rush for answer, as usual - have to go out now for a while.

You have to hover your mouse over 'Modify profile' and choose one of the options that appears - 'Forum profile' gets you to the page where you can amend stuff.

Hi Bluehillside
Is there a help page somewhere please to explain things like quote boxes?
there it is at the top next to HOME
But its eay to use the quote button on a post you want to reply to, this puts all the text in the reply you are doing, so you can delete any text not relevant to your reply.
or you can use
and
like we used to!
Or in your reply click on the Insert quote button on the post you are replying to:

just watch each time that you are typing outside the quote commands!

I would like to stress that I am not a wind up merchant ;D
It's nice to have a board to replace the Beeb. I missed it when it closed the England board (many moons ago - yep, I'm an addicted Beeb poster from way back when!) and only found out about the newest old one after watching The Big Questions. Anyone else see a pattern emerging lol
BTW - I laugh a fair bit and take very few things too seriously. Can we have a laugh smiley and a whistle smiley - I use those two a lot!

Hi everyone :) I'm Jane. I'm 36 and a teacher of primary school pupils. I live in a very lovely part of Essex but teach in a less lovely part.
I posted on the BBC for the first time last summer and was sad to see it go, so thanks Jakswan this looks like a really good format.
I call myself an atheist now, although I have a belief in something. At present I can't articulate to my own satisfaction what that is, but God won't do any more.
I am very much anti theist. I think religion damages and stunts people's growth, causes hate, misery and general intolerence and ignorance. Although the religious do make me laugh, so it's not all bad.... ;)

The lack of the BBC CT board has turned out to be quite painless really! Reminds me of the line in the song, 'I like to be in America', from 'West Side Story' - Everyone there will have moved here.'
Anyway, I have started on one of the two tasks I intend to pursue, i.e. in the time I'd have spent on CT,over the next six months - improving my web site! The other one is to listen to all of my CDs and decide which ones I will probably not want to listen to again.
Anybody else set themselves some new goals?

I must admit, I much prefer it here to the BBC message board. ;D

About me: well I'm an atheist, but in a 'mixed faith' marriage (my wife is a practising catholic). Interests, choral singing with my secular choir (we do loads of sacred stuff), all sorts of other music, football, good food and drink and general family stuff (3 fairly young kids). My line of business - well you can work that out from my username.

Secular choir - i.e. not linked to any religious organisation, open to people of any faith or none.
But often does the standard (and not so standard) repertoire of sacred classical choral music - Bach masses, Vivaldi gloria etc etc. About to do the Verdi requiem. But not atheist, although a concert or two ago one of our more christian members refused to sing one piece that she felt was 'anti-christian' - quite how I (and the rest of the choir) never worked out.

Dear Prof,
Vivaldi Gloria, Gloria in excelsis Deo, Glory to God in the Highest, can't argue with that ;D
Prof when you sing a song like the above, do you notice any change in you.
Reason I ask, a composer, famous composer, modern day composer, sorry can't remember the chaps name, he is an atheist,
I watched a documentary about sacred music and this chap said that he cannot write Christian music unless he thinks about God.

Singing brings an huge sense of well-being, but it doesn't matter to me whether the words are sacred or not. There are certain latin phrases that are very satisfying to sing - they sort of work, but that's all about the actual words, not what they mean - so were they in English rather than latin that level of satisfaction would be lost to me. Sure there'll be christians who feel differently, but that's just how it feels to me.

Hi I used to post on the BBC boards. Was in a big debate with Blue a few months ago which I meant to continue then my Mum became ill and subsequently died giving me other priorities. I logged in to the BBC boards on the last day it was open with 10 mins to go and no idea it was shutting down - wot a shocker! Anyway hi all I'm a broad non-traditional theist with pantheist leanings, although that depends a bit on definitions...
I don't draw from one particualar tradition - culturally christian background with a big respect for buddhism, i tend to mostly but not exclusivelty celebrate my spirituality through neo-paganism.

Actually, no, because Dolphin advised me right from the start that it is better to have IE set to 'ignore colours and fonts'. I have the magnification on nearly all the time and on my screen there is an area of about one-twelfth of the total window. Voice on all the time of course.
What is the background colour of the screen for you?

Dear Wigs,
Morning full member, yes it is a very beautiful painting, on so many levels, anyone who visits the Kelvingrove art museum stands and stares at this painting for ages, when I look at it I always think, what kind of mind, what was he thinking about, was he on drugs, or was he in fact filled with the Holy spirit.

Q: When you are looking at a thread with quotes and nested quotes, is there any difference in the font or colour between the quoted partsand the answers? It's quite tricky to work out, especially as, as far as I can se, the last quote before the answer is not indented - or rather the answer is not further to the left. It's not really a problem as such, and I can sort it out, but it would be interesting to know.
-
Susan
In Gonnagle's post above yours, the nested quote is in a pale blue box and the reply box surrounding it is a slightly darker blue and beneath it is his reply to you in standard colours.

Better do an intro. I posted as myself for many years on the BBC, but then I went away for a time and came back as realgonecat, and he was okay for his time, however there were never enough groovy cats and chicks to justify his posting existence, so I'm back as this guy, which is really the most basic and descriptive of monikers, and will appear at the top of every post I put up. However, those of you who know me, and like me enough to be that personable, can still just call me Jimmy. All others please take the long walk off the short pier. :)
So there's no confusion, although there still will be, I am not an atheist and I am not a theist---I am a SKEPTIC, that's how we spell it here in America, and, no, I am not stupid and you are not extra smart just because I'm a Yank. I know it's tempting to think that, and I'm not saying you wouldn't mostly be right, just not in this case. I fully expect most of you to be boring and stupid, you know, just like back at the old BBC boards, but many of you will not be, and I want to thank you in advance for your message board fellowship, and for the many times you will make me think, make me laugh, and every once in a great while, bring a tear to my eye. One last thing!--- to all of you who have been and will become sparring partners, I must warn you I have very tender feelings, a truly delicate flower, or so most women tell me, but I also have a savage left hook, but only men tell me that.;D
Cheers,

I'm not sure it really is Luther. Going to have to set up the Noah's Ark thread so we can put it to the test.

Karma is a heathen idea I can't accept it as God wouldn't approve.

Hiya flyinghigh here, just joined.
A bit about me, a woman, non-believer, not in the first flush of youth. I heard about this forum on another one where I post.
I look forward to the discussions.

Hi flying high. I wonder what the male/female numbers are here. I've just been to a Humanist Group meeting this afternoon, which was an end of year debate proposedand opposed by members (plus a cream tea afterwards) and there is a preponderance of males. Also I went to a JREF two-day conference in London in 2009 and at a rough guess I'd say it was three-quarters male! Unfortunately, I must have been almost the oldest there... ah, such a shame!!

Hello!
Keturah, aka Ketty or Ket, here. Outgrew the CTMB several years ago. 8)
-
Hi, Keturah
Nice to have you with us.
BTW, your Username sounds vaguely familiar - anything to do with Egyptian mythology?
( There's a minor Egyptian deity running through what's left of my mind, and it has your username )
-
Welcome Ketty! ;D
-
Thank you Jim and hiya Floo! :D
Jim, Keturah bore Abraham six sons. That is the source of my choice for a board name.
I'm trying to get to grips with how this board works - can you tell me how to 'ignore'? Not that I want to use it just now, you understand. 8)
-
Hi, Keturah.
It's just that 'Ket' and 'Ketty' are Egyptian names. ( Ketty or Khety was the name of four ninth dynasty Kings...sorry, geek mode, need a mars bar.)
You need to go into your profile settings; it should be there.
I don't use it - the only thing I ignore is spam.
And I'm not that up on Genesis names. I have enough trouble with Scots.
-

And I'm not that up on Genesis names. I have enough trouble with Scots.
I did use "Khety" as a nom de plume on a site once, simply because the relatively obscure Ninth Dynasty rarely gets mentioned, and I felt that using a name such as Menes would be frankly rather pretentious. I like to think that at least one of the Khety's would have appreciated the tribute :)
-
You mean I'm not the only geek on here?
I thought I was unique...
Well, nearly as daft as Gonnagle, but I haven't been on as long as him.
Just give me time.
Seriously, HWB, I've been fascinated with Egypt - no, I'm not a pyramidiot - most of my life.
I studied Egyptoligy at uni, but had to drop out for health reasons. I still keep in touch, though.
-
Got the 'ignore' thing - thanks! :)
Interesting about the Egyptian thing - perhaps the Biblical Keturah's name is connected to the Egyptians' use of a similar name in some way: one being the derivation of the other, maybe?
-
I doubt it; the ninth dynasty was probably several centuries before Abraham's time.
BTW; useless fact of the day;
Did you know Sheshonq 1 ( Biblical 'Shishak', 1 Kings 5 ) Who invaded Israel in Rehoboham's time, had a gold death mask?
The wealth of Nubia had long gone; so it's interesting to speculate whether the gold came from the Jerusalem temple.
end of useless fact of the day.

Hi floo,
Went into the BBC earlier this week and found it was locked. They locked me out some time ago after keeping me on premod for what must have been a record amount of time.

Hope all is well with you and yours. H.

So Atruster isn't Atruster? :o
Well perhaps the admin should now consider banning Shaker and Atruster.
That way we would be able to post in peace without the insults taking place.
I think they want to bring the site down because of the competition with nglreturns.
The problem with nglreturns is that being banned is a personality contest and telling lies.
If they don't like you the mod insists on leaving if they cannot ban you.
Ignore them...

Who knows what the real truth is, but I have gotten nothing but fair shakes from wigginhall and jakswan to this point, hopefully that will continue, since I am no good at sucking up to the folks running things. :)
Name calling will persist no matter what, but identity molestation should be squelched immediately. As far as nglreturns goes, they created the competition by preventing posters from posting there and then lying about it. Now acrimony prevails, and invective flies, but like all things, if just left alone, it'll pass. Let natural selection take it's course. I think this shall be the last time I even post about it.

Well currently my mirror is on a tilt and all I can see in it is your avatar.
Is that you, really?
Anyway, coming from I assume a world's leading expert on arseholes, having spent your entire life with one, I shall take that as a compliment.
BTW. My powers of observation lead me to believe that you are as funny as a fart in a spacesuit.
But lets put that all aside shall we, I don't want to get on the wrong side of you so I will change my name and avatar just to be a good little suckup.
Does that receive your approval?

Hi everybody. I'm a nearing 60, fat smoker. I've have a long suffering wife . I'm strongly atheist, a financial conservative and a social liberal.
Used to post on HYS and the Big Questions sites until the Beeb decided that letting the unwashed speak was too much democracy for too little license fee.
Im totally incompetent with this kind of tech (when I click a smiley, I just get the dots & commas version :) ).
Well done Jakswan for getting this up and running.

Hi - I just saw this Introduction page so apologies if I posted a few days ago before introducing myself.
I used to post on the BBC MB for a few months until it closed. I like this one - thank you Jakswan - as it is open in the evening and early morning. I'm Muslim BTW. I'm also female, married, 2 kids. I've met many different kinds of people - university, the army , work, Hajj, in various communities, read many books and been involved in various humanitarian political / charitable events that I think now I'm virtually unshockable - really it's amazing what goes on behind closed doors but eventually comes out into the open. But please don't take that as a challenge to try to shock me though :) The only thing that still shocks me is some people's willingness and capacity to inflict physical pain on others far weaker than themsleves :o. Looking forward to contributing when time permits.

Realized I had not been on BBC board for months - sometimes good debate dries up and same old arguements increase :( Was startled to see it BBC was closing.
I was tedferg on BBC as I am here. 73, Liverpool born, California since 1967. Once Catholic, now Atheist, but less militant than before, with strong Buddhist sympathies.
Happy to stumble on this board and delighted that I will be able to post late in my day :)

Atheist eh! have you read the six hundred page manual regarding posting on this new site, mandatory I am afraid.
Gonnagle.
-
Welcome, tedferg,
I hope you find these boards as lively as the old Beeb ones. :)
-
tedferg
Welcome, indeed. I'm afraid my colleague is wrong about this, as atheists have to memorize the 500 page document, and recite it perfectly. Christians simply have to mention baby Jesus, and they are in.
-
OK working my way through the 500 page manual !
Atheist but no longer anti-theist. Recently told persistant JW callers that we are Buhddist - they smiled and said 'have a nice day'. Don't think they'll be back.

Greetings an welcome to the mostly harmless "mad" house

Hello there!
I see an introduction is the etiquette.
Found you when on the tinternet for five minutes looking for info on something ... you know how it is two hours later .... mmmm Started off with wondering why the actor who plays Henry V111 in that TV series didn't wear body padding for the later episodes > to what do we really know about said King > what woud Britain be like if he hadn't fallen out with the pope > wouldn't it be handy to time travel and ask him a few questions > if I could do that why not go back to the so called Holy Land 2000 years ago and see if I could find this Jesus bloke (if he existed even) and see for myself what he was really like > why are so many people so sure they know ... well you get the drift.
Anyway fetched up here and have had a fascinating time reading through all the threads .. well not ALL of them lol
Lantana as I one read a novel set in OZ where the characters threw stuff into the Lantana thicket and thought yeah that sounds a bit like me. I'm a good listener and people are forever throwing stuff I'd really rather not have onto me (know too many secrets!!!) ... too damn nice for my own good. So I may well be bemused by others beliefs but I'd not rubbish them (well not to their face anyway).
Having said that maybe I can practise being more outspoken on here?

Hi Lantana, and welcome!
Also to tedferg and the other new members! Tedferg, I was also RC and am now atheist!
Nice to see you here!

Welcome - we're pretty outspoken on here - but not for the sake of it
Many of us are refugees from the old BBC Religion site
Enjoy

Many of us are refugees from the old BBC Religion site
So I gather ... I did actually find you from a link on there posted by Floopowder (who I see can is pretty outspoken on here)
Enjoy
Well so far I've been finding it very interesting. I don't know whether to laugh or cry at some of the posts. I just can't believe that some people still insist on the reality of a global flood for instance. I've just found out that a good friend of mine is going to do a theology course now that she's retired .. much to my surprise even though I knew she was a church goer. Reading the threads on here, and having a pre-think as it were, will hopefully help in any discussions we might have ... or at least help to to understand where she is coming from!
I can understand the need for a belief in a god as a way of finding 'the meaning of life' but what I don't understand is why the Abrahmic one? I suspect that the original believers in said deity would be quite astonished at the following he now enjoys.

Hi, Jamie;
Good to have you with us.

Oh what a mess! I simply meant the Julie who used to post on the original Sparrows board. :)
Sparrows Board! :o
Brings back some unpleasant memories. I quit that board in a huff and then the "gentleman" who ran the thing comes on and melodramatically declares he banned me. I got like ten e-mails, leonard, from posters there telling me they would have believed him had they not already known I had quit the board. That was probably the worst posting experience I have ever had, the guy was a total dick, and in charge, bad combination. That board was a mess, but Julie was the one saving grace, having converted to Christianty from paganism at that time. She and husband Mike used to be the backbone of the old pagan board, but you know all this. They are still Facebook friends of mine but I never use Facebook anymore. I do miss them.

Hello I'm also from the bbc boards. I'm a bit confused about how to use the site. I can't see a 'reply to this message' button. How do you reply to a specific message?
I'm also an atheist who was raised Catholic. Questioning what I was raised to believe to be common sense was at first confusing but my life was improved by it. I enjoy having my beliefs challenged. Particularly those I'm suspiscious that I was conditioned to hold.
My interests change constantly but right now at this minute I'm interested in hearing challenges to merits of democracy and the belief that all humans have a conscience whether they choose to listen to it or not. I was raised to belief both were obvious and indesputable facts.
I read more than I post and enjoy hearing strong opinions that strike me as bizarre.
-
Hi Square-Eyes - each message has a quote function/button next to it

Dear Square eyes,
Atheist eh!! ah well never mind, the reply button should be at the bottom of each post, but hopefully with the help of other posters you will soon find your feet, anyway welcome and enjoy.

Thank you all. It seems to have been obvious to everyone but me. I'm sure I'll get used to it eventually.
I've been checking around the boards and they seem to be more active than the bbc ones were. More messages as a result of always being open? 6pm always struck me as an irritating time to close. I'm not sure whether I'll enjoy having more activity on here or find myself swamped though. I've been having trouble finding a thread to post on because there are so many messages on them to read. I'll have to keep checking so I can get in on new threads...

Would it not be wiser to encourage people to use Quote? That way we can all so who they are replying to as Reply doesn't provide that information. What do you reckon?

Dear Alan,
A wonderful suggestion, so over to you for a brief lesson in how to use quotes properly.

Yes, I gather there used to be people in Scotland who could play football. Has everyone up there now taken up curling or something?

I'm Betty. Some of you may remember me from the original BBC board. I used to post there a lot, but I couldn't get the hang of the format of this board, so didn't continue here.
Thing is, I came to realise that posting to you guys brought a lot of positive benefits. It made me think. It made me reassess my own ideas constantly. It introduced me to new ideas. I found that I was less 'sharp', less critical and less articulate. I want to get that good stuff back!
Bear with if I'm a bit clunky at first; I'm out of practice.

Hi, Vinde. Welcome to the boards!
What does your name mean?
Hi Betty, thank you.
I chose my name after the Star. It was one of the few star names I remembered from from my youth. As a lot of young lads did, we dream about walking amongst the stars. I think the Latin translates as 'grape gatherer' It always stuck out as I remember reading it was a Yellow Star which always reminded me of our lovely shiny globe :)

Greetings. :)

Hi folks
I'm a tax exile from Paisley who currently lives in Nottingham.
I don't believe in any of the gods that people worship but I wouldn't say I'm an atheists as I do accept there's a minuscule chance that I may be wrong. At times my views can be strong ones but I always respect the fact that people are just as entitled to their view as I am to mine.
I like travel and have been around the Far East a few times.
I still listen to Deep Purple, Jethro Tull, Wishbone Ash, Rory Gallagher, etc, That's because I never really got out of 1972

Hi Khatru. I hope you like it here.
Strong views are all more than welcome here. Sometimes people get carried away but the moderation is good and broadly speaking so the posters.
I don't believe in any gods either. While I also accept the possibility that I may be wrong, I do identify as an atheist. I found the term 'agnostic' misleading as people assume you do believe in something, you just haven't found the right faith.
-

I will also expect to travel first class on the train as the sheep does.

Hello everyone 8)
Michael, is that you finally returning to the forums? ;D
-
::) Hi TLW. I hope you are keeping well.
-
Hello everyone 8)
Greetings Dove. :)
-
I don't believe in any of the gods that people worship but I wouldn't say I'm an atheists as I do accept there's a minuscule chance that I may be wrong. At times my views can be strong ones but I always respect the fact that people are just as entitled to their view as I am to mine.
Don't associate with that atheist lot. I heard they eat babies.
I love babies, but I couldn't eat a whole one.
-
Greetings folks - Long-time lurker - decided to actually contribute to conversations. Don't know what else to write here, perhaps should mention I am an ex-muslim but still a cultural muslim or as I like to describe myself (some say an oxymoron) an athiest muslim.
-
Arch Stanton;
Lurk no more!
Jump in and join the madhouse.

Atheist ! They eat babies don't they ?

Thanx for the welcome splashcuba and anchorman.
Only babies I have ate are the jelly kind.

Welcome Arch
Always good to 'meet' new people :)

Wow an athiest muslim, you don't often see thiose two words side by side in then same sentence.
Welcome aboard

Nearly Sane - I was never a poster on the old religion ethics BBC forum - I used to post on a different BBC forum - more ethnic than ethic. But was familiar with the religion ethics BBC forum.
BK Baracus - Thank you.
Cymrudynnion - athiest muslim or muslim athiest, not quite sure. Perhaps it works if the word muslim is used in a political sense rather than a religious sense.
-
Welcome, Arch! Many will say you don't exist, but you have provided clear, irrefutable evidence. Hope you enjoy posting here.

Welcome Arch Stanton.
Do you bite the heads off first, or just nibble at the toes?

Ahhh - in the same way we have atheist Jews - people who are ethno-culturally Jewish but don't believe in the religion part?
Gotcha

Now we are still talking about jelly babies aren't we ?

So Arch, why now?
Long time lurker and suddenly now you are posting.
Why did you become an atheist? Would be good to start a thread about your journey to disbelief.
Welcome on board.... ;D
-
Yeh Arch tell us of your road to reality ;)
-
Dear Arch,
Another atheist, great, just what we needed :-\
Yes I would love to hear all about your fall from Grace :P
Oh sorry, welcome to the forum ;D
Gonnagle.
-
Thanks to all above (Betty, FSM)who have offered me a warm welcome. I will try to tackle some of the points raised.
Yes, BK Baracus - you indeed have got it - though some will say that jews are a race not a religion - so they can be athiest and still be a jew, whereas muslims are a religion but not a race - I say that there are black jews from Ethiopia that I have heard of, surely they are not of the same race as European jews and also on a religion(ethics) board my identity stemming from religion is one of a muslim. Otherwise my identity is British Pakistani.
Yes Prof, sometimes it is difficult to tell them apart, after all most of us have brown skin. Seriously though it is a bit like asking someone who you meet who hails from Northern Ireland whether they are protestant or catholic (usually one of my first questions) and if they reply neither I am an athiest, my follow-up question would be is that athiest catholic or athiest protestant (or more accurately non-catholic). Also I would say the emotional mind lags behind the rational mind.
For instance, I don't eat pork, hardly drink, pray once a week (fridays - so that is once out of the possible 35), keep fasts but dont believe in the divinity of Islam or the existence of God. Possibly a mass of contradictions. Perhaps I describe myself as a athiest muslim and not just an athiest because I am proud, so to speak, of my cultural upbringing, of being a Pakistani - others in the same position are perhaps embarrased by their cultural upbringing - have identity crisis - hate Islam because of specific reasons. I as a heterosexual male have not a lot to fear from Islam as manifested in my culture.
The Lord's Way - I lurk on a few forums - some I visit once a day to others once a month - the reason why I decided to post now, is that I 'usually' post in one forum, and last week I banned for 3 months from a muslim forum(they are so thin-skinned)and needed a forum to fulfil the itch. Not that I am a prolific poster, usually a week on- a week off etc.
Also both you and Gonnagle have asked about my fall from grace. Not that interesting really, was about 11 when I asked my mother if Allah made us who made him, to be met with 'we shouldn't really ask those sort of questions'. Hmm. Plus the fact that I hail from the more puritanical end of islam the 'wahabis' it wasn't long before my natural rebelliousness and inquiring mind overcame the indoctrination.
That was more than twenty years ago. Not enough time now to go into further detail.
Kenturah - re jelly babies - I pop them in whole.
-
Hi! Arch Stanton, did you pick your name from the Clint Easwood film? the name on the grave next to the unmarked grave where the gold was buried?
-
Thanx for the welcome splashcuba and anchorman.

There was a poster on the BBC boards who used the same moniker, but he usually posted on the Jewish board.

I was referring to the distinction between political and purely religious Islam, if such a thing exists.
Some say politics is the new religion.

Dang, and there was me thinking I was being creative and individual using that for my username. My apologies to all those who knew the original Arch Stanton of BBC forum fame.
Hi! Arch Stanton, did you pick your name from the Clint Easwood film? the name on the grave next to the unmarked grave where the gold was buried?
Yes Dajjal. One of my favourite films. Did you know that the cemetry was built in 3 days for the movie. I had actually thought it would have been in existence anyway. It is in Spain.
-
Some say politics is the new religion.
No, football is the new religion.Politics is "showbusiness for ugly people".
There speaks the voice of personal experience. Break a leg professor. You are a Star of show business. ;D ::)

Welcome, we are a strange lot. My take is have a poke around, see if you like it, nice as many of us are, it's not a board for just the religious there are many baby eating atheists like me so see how ypu feel before sharing personal stuff.

Hi Quent!
I'm a lapsed - in fact I lapsed so far I am now atheist!!
Welcome, lots of great peeps here, enjoy!

Well, I have heard Rhyll being described as a Hell on Earth, but that's presumably not what you were referring to... 8)
Welcome to the boards. It would be interesting to hear about your religious experience. You'll no doubt receive perspectives from both the believer and non-believer point of view so, if you are interested in hearing both, please fill your boots and see what people have to say.
Cheers - GM 8)

Welcome Quent
As a fellow Catholic (I prefer the term 'unorthodox' to 'not a very good one' ;) ) might I suggest you have a looksie at some of the threads to get an idea of the way things run around here - its not for everyone, especially, for example, those with a thin skin.
:D
-
I born into Catholic family but my mum only took us to church at Christmas and Easter. When the priest called my mum would hide behind the door pretending to be out if she spotted him walking to our door. My dad told him to buggar off once.
We come up to the north of Wales quite a bit as I have a mate from school who lives near Holywell. I like Prestatyn but Rhyl is a bit of a dive, sorry I hope no one here lives there?
-
Hi Quent80 and welcome!
I hope you'll stay and feel at home. :)
I tend to dip in and out here. Some of the threads I haven't got a clue what they are talking about ...... but I've found it's a good way to pick up some clever phrases to impress my friends! 8)
I have my favourite posters and the others I like less I ignore .... the scrolling button on my mouse gets a lot of use!!!

Welcome, Quent
Check out the threads before you dive too far in. Get to know us all a little.
I'm a non-believer. I don't believe in gods, healing crystals, homeopathy, feng shui, lucky charms or fairies. I'm an equal opportunities non-believer!
I'm interested in how people maintain and use their beliefs rather than the beliefs themselves. Sometimes believers find me annoying because I always want examples and evidence, and I need to know how things work. I'm a practical kind of person.

Splash, there aren't enough hours in the day to disbelieve all the stuff that isn't true in the Universe. It's quicker to sift out the relatively small number of true things in the Universe and accept them.

Hello everybody
A bit about me: father, husband, son, part-time musician, part-time scientist, part-time armchair theologian and philosopher, part-time gardener, and full-time human grappling with all that it means to be human. In all these things I walk with (and perhaps sometimes away from) Jesus Christ.
I'm always interested in seeing more of the story of which I am part - either the story of how we came to be just here today, or the story of what is around me today and what may come to pass in the future.
I enjoy hearing different theological views, or non-theological views, of who we are and what is our story.
Anyway, I look forward to have my thought provoked!
Hello, Monk, and welcome.
A scientist and a Christian, eh? Interesting!
I hope you enjoy posting here. Take a look at the ongoing threads, if you haven't already done so. You'll get an idea who we all are from reading our posts.
I'm a part-time mother (teenagers mostly need me at mealtimes) part time wife (husband is a contractor, working away) part time teacher (that's what my contract says!). I'm a secular humanist, from a Christian background. I'm interested in why and how people hold beliefs, rather than in the beliefs themselves.
If you need to know anything about how the site works, just ask on a thread and someone will help you. It's a friendly place.
-
Greetings Mr Monk. :)

Hello, officially, Monk,
I hope you find the threads stimulating, and the daft ones amusing.

Hi Everyone,
I have just registered so I thought that I should introduce myself.
My name is Jasmine. I am a Christian and have been since I was sixteen years of age. I am not a bible puncher and will always listen with interest to other peoples opinions.
I am a scientist in virology living in London and working from one of the University there. I am quite busy there so will only be popping in when time permits. I do not like confrontation but I do enjoy reading peoples opinions.
I hope to enjoy my stay

Welcome Jasmine
Virology - how interesting!
It is at the moment. Keep an eye on the News, we are getting very close to developing a cure for certain types of cancer by using a well known virus. That is why we are very busy right know. Sadly, I can say no more than that right now.
If you want a good example of the work of God take a good look at a virus, any virus, and see what a maximum of three genes can do in a very short amount of time. That is why I have remained a Christian.
I digress, sorry. Thank you all for your welcomes

What you have stated is a non sequitur. What makes you think that what a virus can do has anything to do with 'God'?

Welcome, Jasmine. Whilst reading up to this post I was thinking that I would post something on the lines of, welcome and I hope you will be interested in telling us why you believe in god, and what about evolution, so I'll be keeping an eye on this thread and the other boards. :)

I've never really considered viruses to anything more than the enemy so this is fascinating.
I understand you can't speak about your work but when you get the time it would be great if you could explain more about how you work influences/strengthens your faith.
You can carry on chatting here or ideally start a new thread in one of the boards. We've only just opened the science board so there aren't many thread there yet and I think this would be a great way to get it started.
You're very welcome Jasmine :)

Hi Jasmine
Welcome to the board, hope you have fun here.
Interested to see you are a virologist. My son in an undergrad at Reading doing BioMed and is thinking of specialising in virology. Feel free to PM me if you have any advice for him. Or, if you were in a position to be able to offer him a summer work experience placement in your lab. Ahem. ;)

Interesting - I had heard about some scientists testing venoms from various animals like scorpions as treatments for cancers, but not viruses.
Sadly the cancer-killing venoms seem to have gone the way of crocodilin, the antibiotic derived from crocodiles - not heard anything about it in the last couple of years :-\

Leonard James
I have a very simplistic response to your question. We, both of us, see through different eyes. Through yours it might be a non sequitur, however, through my eyes it is as relevant as anything I know.
You see, if you are atheist than you will never see god in a virus, or anything else, for that matter, why would you, god is as real to you as unicorns are to the world. Your mind will never make such a fallacious connection; however, you must understand that I am a Christian and therefore believe in divinity.
I associated all of my sensory experiences with a living god; therefore, the beauty that is involved in a culture in a petri dish is as God given as photosynthesis or evolution is. I do not expect atheists to see the world through the same eyes as mine and very much understand that I do not see the world as the atheist does.
Therefore, the fundamental answer is that we are looking through very different eyes.
Jasmine

Very well put!

Interesting that you should say that. I think that most people do see viruses as the enemy, amazingly, only 1% of all deaths can be attributed to an infectious disease.
Not good news for us as finding vaccines and treatments for viruses has become a mundane and ordinary task. Science has done such a thorough job that we have done ourselves out of a job. Since I have been a virologist the focus has changed from killing viruses into modifying them to our benefit.
I understand you can't speak about your work but when you get the time it would be great if you could explain more about how you work influences/strengthens your faith.
I will do my best.
It is not the virus that we are using that is not open to discussion it is the modification of that virus that is top secret, until it gets to the patent office. You would be surprise to know that the virus is called a retro virus and has been in the media now for 27 years. A possible killer into a life saver. It is all very exiting stuff,
You can carry on chatting here or ideally start a new thread in one of the boards. We've only just opened the science board so there aren't many thread there yet and I think this would be a great way to get it started.
I would suggest that the topic would be best found on a science board. I will do my best to set up a relevant thread for debate.
Jasmine

That would be great.
I found a link about HIV curing cancer and posted it on BK's "Great Potential" thread about medical advances like this http://www.religionethics.co.uk/index.php?topic=4916.0

Hi Jasmine,
Thank you for your detailed reply. Yes, I understand well how you see the world, because I was a Christian in my younger days.
I couldn't see the connection between God and the virus because for me there isn't one ... but I quite understand that you can see God in everything.
Leonard.

Greetings. I'm not an atheist. :D

Aww that's a shame as you are missing out on so much - you don't have to help old ladies across the street, you don't have to feel any guilt about taking the money someone has left in a self service checkout, you can throw the Vs at obnoxious kids. Stuff like that. :)

Hi T'orb
Welcome to the madhouse - there are a few us us athiests here.
I see you are from the 'North' (but speaking like that you are still south of civilisation) :)

Hi, T'orb;
I'm not an atheist, but I like being helped across the road.
And I'm north of t'north as well as Gordon....in civilisation.
Welcome to the house of fun.

Welcome t'Orb. I'm also from t'North, and I'm also an atheist.
Keep an open mind. Not all the theists here are bigots!

Yes scepticism and doubt is what I try to cling to. I would suspect that there could be some atheist bigots too.

It seems I am invited back. Best thing for me to do now, concerning the unfortunate moderation of the past six months, is to just let it go. The current moderation has my full confidence, although never an ass kisser, I.
I'll just peruse the current threads and post where I have something worthwhile to post, same dang thing I've always done. I look forward to posting with most of you again, and all you others, we can still find a way to get along, even though i think you are wrong about everything all of the time, because I will no longer have fun at your expense, although i still intend to have fun. :)

Thank you all for your welcome, and especially thanks to you Anchorman for the gracious post. Let's you and I have a go on religious matters now and then but just remember, most of the people I love and respect in this world are Christians, so it is never meant as anything but lively discussion. You have your belief system and I have mine, and although I will go to great lengths to creatively and unflatteringly scrutinize arbitrary belief systems, please never take it to heart.

Hi Jimmy,
Good to see ya back. I missed your gritty posts. :)

The problem with you and me, Leonard James, is we agree on too many topics, so we seldom have an exchange, which is sad, because there is no poster, all the way back to the early days of the Beeb, I have enjoyed posting with more than you.
Now about the grit, I have decided to redirect the grit mostly to the topic at hand and not the poster, forums are supposed to be a non contact sport, but I tend to leave figurative bruises and lacerations on certain posters. Change comes grudgingly later in life, but I am optimistic about my chances.
Tomorrow, LJ, I intend to really let my hair down, and, yes, ladies, I am grateful i still have my hair, and start a thread about a topic that genuinely interests me, and on which, I must modestly admit, I am expert. In all my years posting, I've never nailed this topic down satisfactorily; the posts generally got knocked down on the BBC for being off topic and I never could find a category where the thread would not be off topic, or so the mods determined such, and later, on this forum when i could post on the topic, I was too jaded from past BBC experience to bother.

A big "hello" to Helen, our first new member since April.
You join us at an interesting time for the board.
-
Hello Helen, pull up a chair, settle in and I hope enjoy yourself.
-
Being the sceptic I am it seems a little strange that just after Phil/Ralph is permanently banned again, a new poster pops up, especially as there has been no new ones for a couple of months. If Helen is a genuine poster then I humbly apologise for my scepticism!
-
floo, you're a cynic!
Welcome, Helen.

Problem is surely when a new member joins, cynicism openly expressed is never the correct response since in the case of being wrong it is far more costly and unpleasant than the fleeting joy of being right if one's cynicism was correct?

In this case it would appear that scepticism was the right response!

No, I'm unhappy if when someone joins they are immediately portrayed as a sock puppet. I'd rather be wrong most of the time and get a few more new members because of that than right most of the time and chase posters off because of some sad need to prove my 'foresight'

I agree with NS. Considering how few new members we're getting these days it isn't very welcoming if we treat everyone who joins as if they are a clones or sockpuppet of a banned member without any evidence to indicate that they are.

Hi Summerhawk, glad you made it here in the end! :)
I have had great difficulty trying to get onto this forum in the last 24hrs, and have just managed to do so on my laptop, but can't on my main computer or ipad. I believe Ketty is also having problems!

Hello everybody . . .
Just wondering - 'cos I'm nosey like that - why did Mr Monk become Placidus? But good to see you starting to join in. :-)

Thanks again! I chose that one about 20 years ago. It's symbolic, and now...I even answer to it in the "real" world.

If anyone else wants to join us on FB, the ex-BBC group is here...
https://www.facebook.com/groups/BBCReligion/
To get in, apply, and respond to the PM you will receive (to make sure you are a real person, not a 'bot).
The Secret Forum is, of course, behind the Secret Door in the ex-BBC group...

What if we set up a Yahoo group, or something similar, with email updates?

That's a plan - I'm already on a yahoo group.

I'll put it to the membership on FB.

EDIT - have now done so. Waiting for responses.

Ok Darth I accept that but to be a member of the Facebook group my name, employer and sporting life is revealed. There are some, yourself included, who have sworn to get me removed from sport and sacked from my job due to the views I hold. How do you reconcile that situation?
-
Clean up your life?
Just a suggestion, you understand. After all, if you weren't a homophobic bigot who is on record as saying he would burn down gay clubs, discriminate against gay children and look the other way if they were bullied and attacked, you wouldn't be in this position, would you?
Really, the solution is on your own hands, isn't it?

I don't wish to my life is clean.
Firstly I didn't say I would burn down a gay club. I did say a number of us back in the 1970's (40 years ago) did say let it "burn down" that is a sign of those times. As for the rest if your group cannot stand criticism from someone who is prepared to stand up for their own beliefs, fair enough, yet another clique is born
-
Well, you are only worried because you have been posting about doing things which are illegal - if you hadn't done that, no-one would have known about your predilections, would they?
You live by your actions, words and opinions, and if you think that other people knowing about those actions, words and opinions will damn you in the world of work and so on, that's your choice.
No-one forced you to proclaim your views to the world.
-

No they didn't but as I have said in the past I will always answer a question honestly as I can. In some cases that means offending the poster.
-
Then that's what you live by, and have to live with, isn't it?
No-one's made this problem apart from you.
<shrugs>
-
Darth I would go further. From your comments to me you are running a clique or a Private Members Board/Club.
A person may hold views similar to me, yet, because they do, they are prevented from airing such views because your group will not accept them and will report as they seem fit. As I have said before I can coach/teach who I like'wish, where I like, when I like. It is up to me and NO i don't have to give any reason for turning ANYONE down

You could of course create another facbeook profile just for this group? Just remember not to put any real personal information in it!
-
Thing is, Cym, the ex-BBC FB group actually existed BEFORE R&E got started. So if anything, THIS is the clique :)
-
What's a clique anyway? Sometimes it seems it's a word thrown as in insult by those who would otherwise want to spoil the fun and camaraderie enjoyed by a group of friends who enjoy each other's company. There's essentially nothing wrong with a Private Members' Club. Cymru, if you think there is a club which doesn't want you as a member, then start a club of your own. You and Faces of Eve could be the founder members ::)
-
Dear Josteyn,
Am I in our not, I tried yesterday but facebook is another planet to me, I simply want to read Monty's rantings.

I forgot Darthy has that, wet old hens, FB flock. Now I don't get why dear Darthy felt the need to start that, who's an asset over here. Darthy, surely you don't want to turn R&E into another of your wet old hen clubs? lol

Powwow as an impartial observer over all of that, there are members of that FB site who do not (for whatever the reason) post on here. Surely we're allowed to gather with same friends and different friends in more than one venue?
-
Absolutely Ketty, did I suggest one shouldn't? But that one seems to get a mention here from time to time and I never have mentioned it unless it is being talked about. Surely I can add a comment or two on it? I recall the talk about it being a place where you go to bitch about people over here. lol

I didn't read anything into it. :D ;D :D

Oops, where ever did I get such a notion?

But to be honest, I often talk about some of you with my sisters. They love my sense of humour, just not being the target of it.

I didn't start it. The mods include mods from here. The members include people who no longer post here, or never posted here. It's for the ex-BBC posters (the clue being in the name) and it is primarily a social rather than a discussion area.

Sorry, Gonners, now I know it's you, you're a member :) Like I said, replying to the PM would have speeded things up, we don't let in blank profiles (to keep out spam-bots) without making sure they are human :)
-
Dear Josteyn,
OYE!! who you calling a blank profile :P :P :P
Just to say my reason for it being blank is that I don't trust facebook, to big for its own boots, I do have another profile on facebook with roughly about 500 people wanting to be my friend and I do not have a clue who 90% of them are, just a gut feeling but I am waiting for facebook to collapse under its own weight.
Gonnagle.

Well I am in and I was right, facebook is scarey, although I think I saw a picture of our Horsethorn or it was that guy who does Bargain Hunt, same taste in waistcoats ;D ;D

Greetings in the name of Yah Shua Messiah.
I wanted to use the name Truster on the BBC, but it had been taken. I them opted for a truster which simply means ''a truster'' as in a fly fisherman'' and not, without trust. Unfortunately due to a typo it came out as atruster and could not be corrected as the good old Beeb did not have the facility.
Trust is the abandonment of self into the care of another. Truster is simply one who exercises the trust he has been given.
Does miles still drop in? Does anyone remember Steve. I can't remember his tag, but he often agreed with me to a point it was suggested that I was his or he was my puppet.

Good grief, you're still alive! Welcome. I'm not sure if you will remember me. I was Alan on the BBC boards and am now Black Dwarf, a nickname that Athanasius is (wrongly) reputed to have had. Many of the old BBC people are still here, though miles sinclair hasn't been here for ages and ages.
I'm sure we'll soon discuss something :).

Hi Alan,

I doubt it. (A)Truster doesn't "discuss" anything - he only proselytises (usually morally contemptible) nonsense and calls his pronouncements "facts". In his long and inglorious presence here before he never once I think actually managed to discuss anything.

Heck! Is it really Persecuted? I have been a fan of his for many years ... long before he became Percy, but I'm afraid my old brain refuses to recall his original name on the Beeb. What was it?

Looking for help from imaginary gods is falling for make believe.
Who told you that we (Pagans) look to imaginary Gods/Goddesses for help.
In my belief the deities gave humanity the power of free will thus allowing us to make our own decisions based upon our experiences and view of the World.
If we make the wrong decision so be it and we learn from our mistakes.
Imaginary gods? In your belief they are so, in mine they are not and, until someone trustworthy comes back from the Other Side to tell us what is there after death, my view has exactly the same validity as anyone elses, including yours.

Who told you that we (Pagans) look to imaginary Gods/Goddesses for help.
Nobody ... I was simply replying to Gonners remark that atheists need help.
In my belief the deities gave humanity the power of free will thus allowing us to make our own decisions based upon our experiences and view of the World.
And in my belief the ability to choose between options simply evolved as a survival behaviour.
If we make the wrong decision so be it and we learn from our mistakes.
Quite! That's the whole basis of evolution ... trial and error.
Imaginary gods? In your belief they are so, in mine they are not and, until someone trustworthy comes back from the Other Side to tell us what is there after death, my view has exactly the same validity as anyone elses, including yours.
Well I would advise you not to hold your breath while you wait ... because nobody will "come back" after they die. They never have so far in the whole of human history.
-

I do not see rthe connection. Gonnigle did not state what kind of help. He did not say the help of any deity or deities, or of doctors or any sort, police officers, the armed services etc.
Why assume that he meant Gods or Goddesses?

Are you reading these posts?
Ah, Steavey. Whatever happened to the Beeb's favourite Moonie? Always made me chuckle that you weren't allowed to post the word Moonie on the Beeb
Heck! Is it really Persecuted? I have been a fan of his for many years ... long before he became Percy, but I'm afraid my old brain refuses to recall his original name on the Beeb. What was it?
No idea if he is posting here or not, but Percy was Steavey on the Beeb before becoming Persecuted.
I think he was the only Moonie on the Beeb or at least the only memorable Moonie

Yes, you are right ... and if my memory serves me correctly his original name was his own Steve ******** but I'm damned if I can remember the surname. It was back in the days when it wasn't dangerous to disclose personal details.

Hello all,
I am a Muslim Ex-Revert, which, if you twist your head around twice, means I converted to, participated in, and then left Islam. Dizzy yet?
I was a very religious hijaabi, which for those of you who are not up on your Arabic, means I covered my hair and followed the Sunnah. Oops. More Arabic. Hard to get away from it, isn't it?
I spent years in Purdah (phew, not Arabic!), which means I never left the house without express permission or a chaperone.
If this sounds like abuse, or a violation of human rights, you would be correct. It didn't help to have an abusive spouse, which makes Purdah a living hell. But that was his right, his culture. Islam is very supportive of a man's rights.
When I escaped with the children, I found myself safe, but so culturally confused that even I can't make heads nor tails of it. I moved to a monoculture area, Muslim-free, to get a handle on my Stockholm syndrome and reintegrate myself and my family into the mainstream society. Fear is a habit, though, it seems it has come with me.
Now I force myself to speak in English as often as possible, but every time I get a little stressed, I regress and use the languages I spoke in my home for the past two decades, which, to make it even more pathetic, I am not even fluent in. It's a short circuit, a stress reaction. Probably a symptom of PTSD. It positively creeps me out. I can't seem to help it.
This is where I reassure everyone that I am in therapy. This is where I make it clear that the children are, too. Only one of my children is still in therapy for PTSD.
Let's not talk about the damaging effects of long term gender segregation. Not right now, anyway.
I left everyone, my reputation, my possessions, a few years ago. I had a lovely reputation in my former community. I mean, "such a nice lady, to never leave the house! Every wife should be so good! Do you have a sister, for my son?" It was addictive, the attention. Now I know what they are saying. They are saying, everyone I ever loved, that they always knew I was bad. They always knew I was not a good person. That I will get the hellfire. These lovely people, who I gave my sweat and tears and cookies to, despise me now. Never mind that I left the community, leaving Islam is a death sentence. Those who leave, must be killed. It's Shariah, Islamic law for those of you sitting through all the Arabic.
I don't want to be good anymore. I want to be right. I am now doing the right things, not the "good" things I used to do.
I find myself in a time warp. Suddenly I am back in a culture and using a language I have not used since high school. It's disconcerting.
Just two months ago, I was much, much worse. Finding love and conversation with Arch Stanton has helped me immensely. So has conversing on forums. Free conversation with intelligent people, no babysitters required. Much appreciated. I used to be on Ali Sina's forum, years and years ago, doing dawah (Arabic!) to keep Muslims in the faith. My apologies to him. No one here need fear that from me, anymore.
Thank you,

Wow! You really have been through the mill! Glad you are managing to shake off all that nonsense.
Remember, your life is your own to live as you feel you should ... so don't let anybody dictate rules to you that you consider unacceptable.

Hi Sassy
http://www.religionethics.co.uk/index.php?topic=7596.msg390936#msg390936
I asked what it meant on the ask about Paganism thread.
Just to save Matthew repeating himself.
:)
Julie
But it does NOT explain him using the BB? You see that does not make sense. I was not referring to just the )0(
I was asking why he was using that and the BB. No two poster would add the same BB.
So I asked him why he was using it when it is ONLY Oak King who used it with the initials BB.

How did you leave. How would you get a passport when it would be out of date?
Surely your husband held the purse strings?
I find it interesting can you tell us what you had to do to leave and how? Were you not scared for your children.
How did you get passports for them as they are not British citizens and that would require the embassy's help?

I did not need any passports. Everything happened in my own country.
Of course he had the purse strings. I was not allowed any strings at all.
What I had to do to leave was go with the police when they came, then go to a safe house and jump through their hoops while the criminal case progressed to a point where I could be relocated.
Of course I was scared for them. Luckily they are mostly better. I can get them care now that I could not access before.
I am not British, neither are any of the children. But I am in love with a Brit. So much so, I could almost send flowers to the British embassy. But that would be interpreted as baksheesh... I don't know the laws on that. But here bribery of government officials is an easy conviction.

Where is 'here'?

As Oak King is still a member it isn't right for him to use his signature.
As a point of pedantry: It isn't a signature. It's just a couple of parentheses and a circle making merely a clinical diagram of an anus - as it looks to me, at least. And that apart, there is no law against using the same signature as somebody else, but we do have rules against using the same (or similar) user name.

It sounds as though you had an awful time Three, but I'm glad for you and the children that you're all now safe.

Dear three
<I don't know the laws on that. But here bribery of government officials is an easy conviction.>
Where is 'here'?
Nick
Nick, please ask these questions and the follow-ups, I beg of you. I have and I am none the wiser, when I use the term cosmopolitan, you will know what I mean. I have heard 3 accents so far. At one stage I asked the 3 online if the 3 that I speak to me on the end of the phone is the same or person, or are there two/three of you.
Like a teenager on a phone lol, then this formidable brain on the forums, it did/does not compute.
I await with bated breath, I will have someone else's pov.

In the US. Where I am in the country there is much less corruption, but in places like California the bribery issue is so prevalent that the social workers are only placed for a year and then they are shuffled to another office. You cannot even give a police officer a donut, I think pretty much everywhere.
-
I did not need any passports.

I don't think having different accents in different languages or situations would make one cosmopolitan. In my honest opinion, that makes one definitely crazy, don't you think so?
The children asked me over a year ago to speak in English only, and that was when they could still answer in another tongue. They have forgotten, now, how to speak another language, but they understand me still. We all had a crash course in culture and language in the last few years.
I did tell you that the way I speak and the way I write are not the same. It is true, and now you know it. Also everything is dependent on how much coffee I have had, how fast I drank it, and whether I ate with it or not. I think you are right about that, I probably have a real addiction going on. Maybe it becomes a living thing inside of me. Perhaps I am experiencing possession. It is not me, it is the coffee. That explains everything.

Welcome back BA!!! Hope you plan to stick around.

I've been an existentialist since my teens, as much because it just 'feels right' than for any deep philosophical engagement, but I value above all things the need to confront the consequences of personal freedom and to accept fully the responsibilities and burdens that it brings.

A nice statement of pagan pholosophy.

Are you taking the piss?
. . . the need to confront the consequences of personal freedom and to accept fully the responsibilities and burdens that it brings.
Not in the slightest!
The statement above is one of the basic tenets of pagan philosophy - taking personal responsibility for your decisions, actions and the consequences of those decisions and actions upon both yourself and others rather than blaming some anthropormorphic personification of evil.
-
I don't need a plethora of water or seasonal deities to comfort me thank you very much. Can you imagine what it means to confront one's aloneness without a safety blanket? I guess not. I'm not belittling you or vour tradition in any way, indeed it sounds to have solid morality, but don't imagine for a moment that your notions of 'freedom' have anything in common with mine.
I don't really like to be labelled with any 'ist' or 'ism', but existentialism is a useful contrivance if people ask. People might assume I'm atheist, agnostic or whatever, but in truth I just accept the mystery at the centre of my life and live it as best I can. Surprisingly, I could even accept notions of an afterlife and indeed I have had some very odd 'psychic' events in my life both as a child and an adult as I expect many people have. These are perplexing, but unlike Carl Jung, I'm too sensible to go down some unlit road chasing them into insanity as he did.
Matthew, the one overriding sense I gained from these psychic events was the absolute sense of 'aloneness' in the sense that a deity might shoulder. If there is a 'top' deity, pagan or otherwise, we can be sure that She is lonelier than any of us.

You have my sympathy for your situation; however, I was in total ignorance of it (being a pagan and a witch but not using a crystal ball) when I made my comment which was not a judgement, or a suggestion that you are pagan or anything else it was merely expressing my agreement with your philosophy and giving my reason for my agreement.
It was not in any way, shape or form intended to offend.
If it did I will just have to take responsibility for that consequence, won't I?

Elevenses actually made a quite brilliant observation about a TOP deity being alone etc.
How WOULD one feel if there was 'nothing' above you & nothing like you????
Might one presume that's WHY we all exist in the first place so that 'upper' deity might know itself ??? I've read/heard this before.
Sensible replies please, IF THAT'S possible HA HA HA ;)

Nick,
How WOULD one feel if there was 'nothing' above you & nothing like you.
Doesn't this define our uniqueness, something that seems to scare us so that we reach for mummy's skirts?
what I have experienced has been reported by others who have meditated or taken some narcotic and felt themselves 'losing it' and feeling like David Bowie's Major Tom drifting away. I never felt any of that - just the 'aloneness' bit. They just happened to me, but I'm open-minded enough to accept that they were just bio-chemical events. They seemed coherent, but the sub-conscious is a powerful component and can probably dramatise our psyche's contents in startling ways. I certainly wouldn't make too much of it, but interesting nevertheless.

Well, my libido is much more quiescent than it used to be, but still lifts its head occasionally. ;)

Well tell him to start posting again! Clearly he's missed (and not just by Len ;) )

I'll remember, if he hasn't read it first. :)

Hello everyone, I’ve been asked to introduce myself so here goes. I’m an ecologist, now more or less retired, and happily married with grown up children. I was born into a Christian family but none of that seemed to rub off on me and I’ve come to suspect that I haven’t a religious bone in my body. The nearest I got to any of that kind of thing came when as a postgraduate student I was introduced, perhaps oddly by my zoologist supervisor, to meditation and the writings of Alan Watts. This led to a rather unhappy period of ‘seeking’ before it eventually dawned on me that nothing was actually missing. Alan Watts had already pointed this out, of course, but sadly I think one has to discover it for oneself. My worldview seems to be essentially animistic and if I have a 'spirituality' of my own it is probably the intense feeling of belonging I experience when out of doors and amongst wild things, rather than in the human world. These days I like to like to indulge my love of walking, idleness, haiku, strong coffee and weasels (of all kinds).
-
Dear Bramble,
Welcome to our happy little band, the strong coffee may be needed but a nice wee whisky might be needed to help you swallow some of the more, well just the more.
Anyway happy posting, oh! and weasels are trousers involved.
Gonnagle.

Welcome Bramble, nice intro, great to have diversity in our mix.
-
Thanks everyone.
Gonnagle, yes, weasels (of the ferrety kind) have often been down the trousers, as a matter of fact, at least when I was younger. And a teenager I commonly had one or more about my person, usually asleep in a warm, dark spot somewhere. If they got restive I could usually send them back to sleep by singing to them.
horsethorn, very good! I expect you know this one:
'Writing a poem
In seventeen syllables
Is very diffic'
-
Dear Brambles,
You sing to weasels :o :o Mods make our newest recruit a hero straight away, this is what we want :P :P
Gonnagle.
-
Hi Bramble,
Welcome aboard.
Ecologist? That should spark some interesting POV :)
I'm glad you joined :)
I thought it was ferrets people put down their trousers ;)

Greetings. Thanks for approving my membership request. I am a 65 years old man living in Hemel Hempstead, U.K., a liberal anglican (Paul Tillich/John A.T.Robinson type liberal), a postal worker, a pipe smoker, a cyclist sometimes, a real ale lover, divorced, and a member of the Labour party. I have in the recent past been a member of the Green Party, and stood for them in the local elections in 2011, and if Labour gives Jeremy the boot, I'll be back off to the Greens like a shot. I was told about this forum by a friend on another forum who there is called Lyn, but I don't know whether that's her user name here.

Welcome SteveH - there is someone who posts here who some of us know as Lyn - but whether it is the same Lyn we will have to see if she confirms this - either way welcome to this little forum, I hope you enjoy it here.

Hi SteveH
Welcome :)

Thanks for the welcomes.

Hi, SteveH. I think I know you from another board, there I'm known as flying finn. Good to see you.

Dear Steve,
Welcome to the Thunderdome, ( Okay! maybe whimperdome but it does have its moments ;) ) Paul Tillich and John Robinson, God as the ground of being, sounds interesting, may be we could have a wee thread on that once we have all shut up about all the political shenanigans we have had to suffer.
Gonnagle.

Thanks, Gonnagle and Flying Finn. Yes, FF, I do know you elsewhere!

I think you were thinking of Lynne.

I doubt Trent was thinking of Lynne, she doesn't post on the same forum as Steve and I or hasn't for a very long time but, having said that, it won't be the first time people have got the 'Lyn/Lynne/Linda/Lyndas' mixed up. Yes Trent, my name is Lyn but I only use that on St Thads. I was Victoria Plum for many years but reverted to my given name because of the TV advertisements for new bathrooms :D.

Yes! Though he would probably prefer real ale. I hope he breathes a bit of life into the CHristian topic and the Religion and Ethics sections, we've been so bogged down in politics recently (understandably). It's good to see some of his poetry though.

Thanks, all. Hi, Lyn/Brownie.

Welcome to Angrydad!
Love your name, did you borrow it from Homer Simpson?
Hope you like it here.

Welcome to SwordOfTheSpirit! Good to see you, another Christian poster - I am making an assumption that you are the same SotS who posts on St Thad's sometimes (you will tell me if you are someone else :). So do I, I'm Lyn and Sprocket is here too, under his own name of SteveH. So is Flying Finn only he is Ad_Orientum on here.
Look forward to seeing you post. I think it is good here, very stimulating; a real cross section which makes for some interesting discussions.

Revelation use to have a forum too but they closed it. Still have Mikes email not thought of them for some time. :D

My name is Walter, I've been reading your posts for about a year now and today I thought I'd join in the fun.
So just a little about myself.
I'm of a certain age, un-PC, highly self motivated, sexist, homophobic, misogynistic, misanthropic, with atheistic tendencies.
I shall try to incorporate as many of these virtues into each of my posts, however if I fail to do so, please don't hesitate to inform me. I wont be offended.
So, I hope we can all have fun together and I look forward to meeting you all,
Walter

Everybody is entitled to their own opinion ... the difficulty comes in deciding whether it is your true opinion, or if it is the result of religious conditioning.

Thanks each, I do try.
btw. I have many more virtues but modesty prevents......

Everybody is entitled to their own opinion ... the difficulty comes in deciding whether it is your true opinion, or if it is the result of religious conditioning.
What's a "true opinion?" as opposed to one arrived at through social conditioning and environment? Have scientists found our "true opinions" in part of our DNA?

I did have some hopes - now dashed, of course - that, as I spent some time before my taking my extended vacation from the Forum, I only look in on occasion, as the lone Pagan (a position now unenviably occupied by the Lady Rhiannon) you might be a second.
Never mind, I am sure that you will identify the Jokers, the Scottish Nationalists, the hard line Christians and equally hard-line atheists as you go along.
Welcome to the asylum and yes, it is run by the inmates!

Bright Blessings, Love and Light, and may the old Ones watch over you and yours always.

Hello all! So, is this the part where I pigeonhole myself?! ;-) I'm a non believer interested in personal freedoms (including freedom of religion). I am concerned by those who embrace ignorance (which seems to be a trend in my country currently). My goal is to hold views which can withstand criticism and pass them to others.
-
Welcome ScepticalOne, have fun here ;)

Always good to see a new member. Just wondering what your country is given your comment, SkepticalOne?

I hope the latest member will contribute to this forum.

Hello everyone!
I look forward to joining the discussions.
As you may have guessed from my username, my name is David Harris and I’m in my early 40s.
I almost couldn’t become a member because it asked me what the capital of the USA is and I answered Washington DC which was rejected..... ;D It accepted Washington though so I made it!
-
Hello David, welcome to the forum :)

Hi, David, good to see you posting. :)

Dear David,
Hello and welcome, now what's all this about having to pass a test before you can join :o

Nothing to do with us. David, Not aware of any such tests - at what point in the process was the question asked?

When you go to register it asks you some questions to prove you’re human. I found it funny that one of them required a wrong answer!

It's not something we control. Just to check was that pre or post your application being approved by the Mod team? If pre then somehow what appear to be spam robots pass it, And in some ways, a wrong answer is more likely to be found by a human than a robot. That said I think that's a daft question to ask for this purpose
-
It’s not a complaint, I just found it funny that I had to answer it wrong to get through!
And yes it was during registration, before approval.

didn't read it as a complaint. Fascinated by the approach

Yes it is to do with us. Before registration the forum asks three questions from a pool of nine. However, the answers we have all seem to be correct.
-
Oh right, it's the Washington one. I think we'll change that to something else because we don't want to discourage people who don't know there is Washington State and Washington DC.

Hello Flower Girl
-
Sounds like a made up name to me ;D
-
Always nice to welcome a new
inmate member.
-
Thanks so much for the welcome.
I'm sixty-four, married, mother of four sons, grandmother of five and live in Florida, USA. I've been a part of a forum that branched off the Beeb years ago, and have made good friends with more than a few.
Currently trying to maintain peace of mind in this terrible time of plague (yes, COVID-19, but the other one too that begins with the letter "T" :-\ )
Not a very good Christian either, even though my favorite person in all the world is Jesus.

It is bad enough a country having to suffer one plague, but to have two, as does the US, is much, much worse. I hope you enjoy posting on R&E. :)

Hi, Flower Girl, and welcome.
What IS a 'good Christian', though...I'm still trying to walk that road.
Adrian Plass, in his book "Why I follow Jesus", says
"One of the reasons I follow Jesus is that He's not as po faced as some of His followers."
Works for me!

Is a good Christian one that knows they're not a good Christian, perhaps?

Viciously sarcastic at times, yes.

Moderator As the thread is about introductions, further posting about the comparative 'viciousness' of the board will be removed as a derail.

It is good to see someone contributing who is not based in the United Kingdom. We have Sriram and Ad-Orientam giving us perspectives not necessarily originating in Great Britain. Welcome.

Thank you. Although, I should warn. Some family members here say I've changed, and they blame it all on me spending too many years making friends across the pond. ;D

Uh, I don't remember, actually. Probably just because I thought it sounded cool. I tend to be skeptical of the skeptical.

There seems to be, unfortunately, a trend of some sort by those who do not like being challenged by sceptics to call said sceptics 'pseudo-sceptics', a really cringe-making label in my opinion. I do hope our new member is not one of them!

There's nothing wrong with skepticism, blue, so long as it isn't expected to be above skepticism.

HI, TS;

Do you have a straightjacket?
Well, of course I do. I have a well worn straightjacket an open mind prone to independent thinking and a thick skin. The asylum is my home away from home.

To me, everyone is skeptical to a greater or lesser degree. I happen to be skeptical. I was an unbeliever for most of my life, only becoming a believer at 27. I'm 54 now. I've been debating the Bible and religion online since 1996 and it has always been my belief that no one converts anyone. The Christian should introduce accurate knowledge to those who are interested. For someone to reject that 'good news' is as satisfying as it is for someone to accept it. After that it's up to the individual and what they want to do with it. Plant the seed.
So I don't operate as a Christian when discussing and debating the Bible and theism etc. My purpose in debate and discussion in the theism vs. atheism arena is to explore inaccuracies held by theism as well as atheism.
Of course, everyone thinks they have the truth. The Bible as well as the interpretation of the believer and unbeliever are all infallible. So what it amounts to is hashing out what is most likely to be accurate information and what isn't.

This thread is primarily a 'hello' thread, and more detailed discussions that lead to on-going exchanges between members are beyond the aim of this thread should take place elsewhere, on one of the other Boards.

I'll be interested to learn what you think to be "accurate knowledge" and "inaccuracies", and why. Given Gordon's (quite correct) enjoinder not to have discussions here, can I encourage you to start a thread on either or both please?
-
Your hope has been dashed in this case, Susan. Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?
There is only one other poster I know who has that sig line so I have been reading all your posts with added interest. I have also taken a look at your web site, newly formed. I hope you will let me know if you are in fact the poster who has known me for many years on another forum! In the meantime I shall respond to the content of posts as is my wont on the four forums I go to regularly and not jump to conclusions!

Thanks to Gordon, I'm back.
My hard drive committed suicide in January; we couldn't recover the data, so I had to bite the bullet and install a new - inferior and, frankly, rubbish - screen reader. It's taken me yonks to get up and running, interrupted by a month's break in, well, you can guess.....

Hello all! My name is Darryl. I have become friends with Gordon on another unrelated forum. I have been invited to join your forum and look forward to a lot of reading material. I am from the U.S. in the State of Missouri.
I am not a diehard agnostic or atheist, mostly just a non-participant. I have a few family members who are VERY religious in what I would call a modern or Pentecostal church. They are always trying to SAVE ME. I have tried before to let go of doubts and immerse myself into it all because that ‘is the way’ to enlightenment I’m told. It all got a little crazy for me so I quit attending over 20 years ago.
I would like to know more of the talking points an agnostic or atheist might explore to counter the incessant onslaught of those trying to SAVE MY SOUL. They feel they are on a Noble mission from God so they will never cease! I am skeptical enough about the whole thing that I might truly be an atheist but I never worried much about a label.
It appears I have a TON (or a Kilo???) of Reading to do.
I struggle a bit with the ‘slang’ used in the UK but I usually get the gist of the point being made.
-
Welcome, Darryl!
-
Welcome Darryl - its great to see you here.
Yes you'll come across new stuff but I'm sure you'll also add stuff yourself, and we'll all look forward to that. It's been a while since we've had a genuine American here :)
In the For Attachements section there is a 'put face to the name' thread - maybe put a pic there so the members here can see your impressive beard.
-
Welcome Darryl.
Another beardo!
Hope you enoy it here.
-
Hi Darryl – just a quick hello and a warm welcome from me too.
Sounds like the only thing you need saving from is your family members! ;)
Perhaps one disappointment here is that over several years no theist has been able to make a case that hasn’t readily been falsified, so fear not – any rebuttals you might like to have to those who those who would “save your soul” are at your fingertips...
Best regards,
Blue
-
Greetings. I'm an active Anglican (Episcopalian in US terms), but, between you and me, I don't really believe much if any of it any more: it's just that, at 72, I think it's a bit of a pity to throw it all over on the final straight, so I stick with it, and call myself a very liberal-to-non-realist Christian.
-
Hi
Not really sure why I am here...
I am an atheist and have a very...how can I put this...alternative view of existence and the need for laws, ethics and morals...but I have a friend who is a very strict Presbyterian and is struggling with various thoughts and actions that they consider sins including merely being friends with someone like me.
I'm doing my own variation of bible study to try and understand them a little better. But as a kind person open to all people, who just sees the world a bit differently, its hard for me to understand how someone can see me as a sin just because I don't share their beliefs.
-
Welcome!
-
Welcome, Firefly. I doubt many of us would be able to say precisely why we are here. I'd hope that we have a diverse enough set of views, and I don't just mean religious, to help, and sometimes amuse.
Please feel free to post lots, little, or just watch.
-
Firefly,
Welcome aboard sinner! ;)
I look forward to hearing about your alternative views of existence in due course.
-
Welcome Firefly - I hope you enjoy it here.
