How long has Cornell been well regarded? I can see why his stuff is interesting but I would have thought that not that long ago it would have been unthinkingly dismissed as twee.

He was reasonably successful when alive.   It is gentler than some of the art of the time but as part of surrealism it is within the pattern. I like found art as it ties in with an idea of serendipity that amuses me.

Yes, I've just been watching the video explaining that. Otherwise I think his work may have been lost - shadow boxes aren't exactly the coolest medium. It's interesting that he was a surrealist before surrealism - I wonder aware he was of what he was creating? I like the idea he said 'collage=life', because I think layering the everyday would lead to some pretty surreal results.
