Anyone upgraded yet?

I upgraded last night as my Windows 7 fault had re-appeared, and I was getting fed up with the aggravation it was causing.

So far, I'm impressed.  No doubt I'll come across a glitch sometime.  In fact, I thought I had already - in the time display.  I hadn't realised that the h/hh option meant the 12-hour system and the H/HH option meant the 24 hour one.

I was also not overly impressed by the fact that the new Microsoft Edge browser (replacement for IE) is the automatic default - but changing the default to Chrome/Safari/Firefox is fairly straight-forward.

Very interested in seeing how it goes for you. Keep us updated please.

Still sitting on the fence myself waiting to see how others get on, I intend to go to PC WORLD in next few days to play with one of their Demos.

Still using Windows 7 but my wife has windows 8.1 on her computer and its horrible.

I upgraded my Windows 7 VM on Monday.  The automatic upgrade didn't work on account of the installer refusing to accept that the VMWare graphics driver was "Windows 10 ready" but I downloaded the full install disk image (4Gb) and upgraded from that. 

I'm not sure it is better than Windows 7.  In fact, the uis of a lot of the tools that come with the operating system haven't been made over leading to an incongruous look.

However, if you have Windows 8 or 8.1, I think this upgrade is a no-brainer.

Don't ever complain of download speeds on BT infrastructure.

I'm in SW France at the moment and having to put up with Orange (that's FT's trading identity). Even after leaving my Windows 7 laptop on all night on two occasions I still have not been able to download the Windows 10 upgrade. It seems to get stuck at about 89%.

I shall have to wait until I'm back in England. I shall be interested to hear of any interesting(!) experiences any of you may have.

Orange isn't all bad, though. With my Livebox modem/router I get VOIP free telephone calls to 120 countries.

Harrowby, if what Jeremy says, if you have Windows 8 Windows 10 is a no-brainer, stick with Windows 7. I'm on Windows 8 and it's been a nightmare. My computer techie says he's had nothing but complaints over Windows 8. For me '7' has been the best upgrade, so far.

I have a desktop computer in England with Windows 8.1 - which I rather like. So I missed out on Windows 8, for which, having heard comments like those of your techie, I am very pleased.

I upgraded a couple of weeks ago, download took about 2 hours and I spent a few more hours figuring out how to work it. Think they should have put an idiot friendly tutorial in a prominent place at start up.

Still have now got it working in a way I find acceptable and that is very like the old windows 7 set up I had before. I see no actual improvement over windows 7.

The one big glitch I have come across is the new Photo file. It will not upload photos from my Cannon DSLR. Neither will it allow me to export photos to files or emails.

So I would say if you have windows 7 and are happy with it stay there.

Windows 10 is however infinitely better than the Windows 8.1 on my wife's computer.

I downloaded Windows 10. Otherwise ok but the touchpad on my laptop doesn't work properly anymore.

I am thinking about it as I can have a free upgrade, but my daughter is concerned that any glitches should be ironed out first.

Many have, Floo.  Windows 10 underwent the most extensive pre-release testing that any Windows OS has.  Obviously, there will continue to be some - even Apple stuff has glitches during its lifetime, and it will be being addressed as and when.  Mind you, what OS have you got at present?

If, as has been said already, you have a perfectly working-order Windows 7, I wouldn't rush to upgrade.  You've got until July 2016 to use your free upgrade; if however, you've got Windows 8 or 8.1, most people I know are saying upgrade regardless of future glitches.

I have 7 on my main computer, and 8 or 8.1 on my laptop. I must have another chat with my daughter about it, as she will sort it out for me, if necessary.

I upgraded to 10 from 8.1 and couldn't see it was much better and where there were changes needed, as has said, some idiots guide on how to use them. Then programs and updates stopped working, couldn't get into control panel and started getting error messages appearing so have reverted back to 8.1, which I actually think is fine (8 was terrible). Not sure where to go from here.

So far I've upgraded:

  • Our desktop from 7 to 10 (no touch screen).
  • My Daughter's laptop from 7 to 10 (no touch screen)
  • My laptop from 8.1 to 10

All fairly straight forward. All seem to be fine.
