Robots and sex!
« on: September 15, 2015, 01:06:31 PM »
Hi everyone,

It had to happen, I suppose. Robots designed for sex!  ::)

Some people are calling for a ban on such robots.

***********************************************************************

A campaign has been launched calling for a ban on the development of robots that can be used for sex.

Such a use of the technology is unnecessary and undesirable, said campaign leader Dr Kathleen Richardson.

Sex dolls already on the market are becoming more sophisticated and some are now hoping to build artificial intelligence into their products.

Those working in the field say that there is a need for such robots.

Dr Richardson, a robot ethicist at De Montfort University in Leicester, wants to raise awareness of the issue and persuade those developing sex robots to rethink how their technology is used.

"Sex robots seem to be a growing focus in the robotics industry and the models that they draw on - how they will look, what roles they would play - are very disturbing indeed," she told the BBC.

She believes that they reinforce traditional stereotypes of women and the view that a relationship need be nothing more than physical.

*************************************************************************

What do you think?

Cheers

Actually this seems to reinforce stereotypes about men if anything.

I was just reading this story on Twitter a moment ago!

What is the problem with having sex with a robot if you aren't getting it with a human? A robot can't reproduce, or give someone a sexually transmitted disease!

In a way this thread matches my thread on Common Sense in that that thread is exploring how the imbuing of robots with common sense will be a requisite for the development of general AI.  As was said on this morning's BBC Breakfast, we are currently decades away from being able to provide robots with the means of displaying common sense, and therefore the type of meaningful relationships that one could have with a robot are equally decades away.

.. or give someone a sexually transmitted disease!
Perhaps it could if it was being 'used' by more than a single person, and not properly cleaned between uses.  :(

You guys do know about sex toys, right?

I suppose the big ethical issue would be to create something programmed to enjoy deviant sex and/or for the purpose of being raped. Would that be a healthier outlet or would it normalise such behaviour?

What happens if a robot loses control due to some virus or malfunction or something?  The woman could die!

Del and Rodney's blow up dolls nearly finished off my father-in-law, I haven't seen anyone laugh so much, what a treat it was to see someone laugh so much, it still makes me laugh when I think about him.

I'm sure there will be some comedian that will pick up the baton with this new wave of robots.

My 9 year old loves OFAH, the look of bemusement on his face when I explained what the dolls were for...

What about feelings, tenderness etc?  Some things cannot be programmed.  I wonder who is actually going to fancy a robot, very few I imagine.  The very idea gives me the creeps.
