Temple Sex!

Hi everyone,

Some of you like discussing India?!  Well...here is something you might enjoy.

http://www.bbc.com/travel/story/20150921-indias-temples-of-sex

***********************************

This extremely conservative country was once home to the world’s first sex treatise and the erotic art on display is perhaps more shocking now than when it was created.

India has been a particularly conservative country for the last few hundred years, influenced by the puritanism of several groups, including Islamic dynasties, British overlords and the country’s own Brahmin priestly caste. But India was not always like this. Sexual norms were far more liberal before the 13th Century, giving equal importance to the secular and the spiritual. Sex was taught as a subject in formal education, and Kamasutra, the world’s first sex treatise, was written in ancient India between the 4th Century BCE and the 2nd Century.

India's most graphic example of erotic temple art However, the best-preserved and most graphic example of erotic temple art can be found in the small town of Khajuraho in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. Its elegantly carved Hindu temples were declared a Unesco World Heritage site in 1986. Built by the Chandela dynasty between 950 and 1050, only 22 of the 85 original temples remain.

these carvings were of an intensely erotic nature, featuring men, women and animals. There were depictions of threesomes and orgies, homosexuality and bestiality.

There are various theories about the existence of such graphic erotic motifs. One of the more exotic ones propounds that since Chandela kings were followers of Tantric principles, which dictate the balance between the male and female forces, they promoted their faith in the temples they created.

Other theories have to do with the role of temples themselves in those times: they were considered places of learning as well as worship – especially of the finer arts, including the art of lovemaking. In addition, some believe that the depiction of sexual activities in temples was considered a good omen because it represented new beginnings and new life.

Hinduism has traditionally considered sex an essential part of life, which could be why the carvings are casually interspersed between others that portray activities as varied as prayer and war. The fact that they are set in plain view and not tucked away in an obscure corner seems to suggest that their creators meant for them to be seen by all.

I found even more interesting than the explicit carvings and the history behind them was the fact that entire families were quietly engrossed in the guide’s speech as he analysed the spicier carvings high on the walls of the magnificent Kandariya Mahadeva temple. No eyebrows were raised, no embarrassed looks were exchanged, no giggles escaped young lips.

************************************

Cheers.

Sriram

Well I don't go for that spin of yours Sriram. Especially since the Devadasi system is still going on in Hindu temples and the authorities turning a blind eye. And don't believe that the Brahmin priests were spouting a conservative puritan line. Talk about whitewashing Hindu history!!

I've been several times to Khajuraho & a most wonderful place it is too. Beautifully kept gardens & everything in full light. !!!! ;)
I don't need to defend Sriram but how many of you armchair critics have actually been to India.???
Not the nearest bloody takeaway or a Bollywood film on telly ?!?!!?!!?

I would say practically NONE.
Devadasi system in Indian temples??? Do you know what the devadasi system involves? Or even what the word means ?

Read that article too. What a load of bollox !!!!! In all the decades of me being involved in Indian culture I NEVER read or seen anything that justifies this kind of action but some here just roll it off as if it's true regardless !!!
It was from a SIKH SITE who shouldn't be succumbing to this kind of religious arrogance anyway !! This twerp for instance....

@#1: I think the Sikhs should put a fence around themselves so we can be isolated from the rest of the barbarians in Hindu-stan, and that fence should be called "Khalistan", where we can live in peace and practice "our way of life" ...

Please do !!!!!!!
The start of this article should've been a dead giveaway too....

In Koppal, an impoverished district in Karnataka, India, virginity is for sale.

When girls dedicated in local Hindu temples under the illegal devadasi system hit puberty, their virginity is auctioned off to the highest bidder.

Well Johnny...as usual you have nothing positive to say at all!  You had to dig up something negative to say. I am surprised HH and others haven't joined you in this circus.  :D

Never mind. I'll explain this briefly.

Devadasis were prostitutes. Nothing more. The devadasi system was an organised and legalized prostitution system which the rich people normally patronized.  I have clarified many times that unlike western societies...Hindu society was one of gradation. Rules were different for different people, expectations and  duties were also different for different people.

All people were not expected to behave similarly since their inner motivations were different. So...it was not about puritanical expectations. Only some people were expected to be pure, monogamous or celibate. Other sections of of the society were allowed their indulgences.

The devadasi system, instead of treating prostitutes as as fallen women who were to be stoned and relegated to hell for eternity...were actually treated as 'gods servants' who performed a useful service to society. Quite unlike today's prostitutes in India and elsewhere!

These women were usually educated and could converse with the men on many matters including politics, commerce, arts, music, dance and so on.  They were usually wealthy since they were patronized by the landowners merchants and others.

They were attached to temples because the temple was the centre of community activities and all arts, dances, music  were practiced there in huge community halls.

So they were akin to Japanese Geisha rather than prostitutes.
Does Magna Carta mean nothing to you? Did she die in vain?

Another spin from you Sriram. And what do you mean "were"? Your own Supreme Court makes it clear the evil practice is still going on.

HH,

I don't know much about the Geisha system. Maybe they are similar.

Johnny,

What do you mean 'evil practice'? Never heard of prostitutes before... Johnny? Coming from the land of Ashley Madison and household women  working for the porn industry....professional prostitutes should be like saints to you... IMO! They are just doing their job after all!    :D

Additionally, devadasis were usually linked to specific wealthy individuals who looked after the needs of those women .....unlike today's prostitutes who are slaves to pimps and are forced to service 10 clients a day!

It is if you have been forced into it against your will, or as a child, and are being abused and exploited by, basically, criminals. Even if the system that Sriram describes was acceptable in principle, and it surely was common in all early temple cultures, it is a sure bet to become corrupted and degenerate at the first chance.

12 or years ago I visited quite a few rural Karnataka temples and can't believe this is a major problem.

The BBC broadcast a programme on a similar case a few years ago (http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00xyzjy) - possibly there is a recording elsewhere - from memory this was basically coercion and exploitation of a girl at puberty - forced to support a mother who had lived under the same exploitation.

I don't think it is particularly relevant to Sriram's OP. It is true that Hindu's treated sex as just a normal human activity (why would they not?), but would expect temple carvings are likely to have mythological and symbolic reference - just as they do in Greek and Roman temples and architecture.
Ah, but I was so much older then ... I'm younger than that now

Sacred prostitution has been a part of many cultures around the world including Judaism, Greece etc.  Sexually explicit carvings and paintings also seem to have been a part of many cultures.

Maybe it is Christianity and Islam that brought rigid sexual norms to many parts of the world.
