Depressing isn't it?
A lot of people don't believe that the loch ness monster exists. Now, I don't know anything about zooology, biology, geology, herpetology, evolutionary theory, evolutionary biology, marine biology, cryptozoology, palaeontology or archaeology... but I think... what if a dinosaur got into the lake?

Depressing isn't it?

For a pessimist, yes! But an optimist knows that we just have to accept the fact and do our best to sort the mess out!  :)

#23 Sam, when I lost my faith one of the most liberating moments was when I realised that I was responsible for saving myself. The more people that realise this, the greater the hope is.

Shaker is wrong of course. What a person writes will not show you their heart, it could all be deception. One can be a darn good deception spotter. To do that I would want to look at Shaker as he talks. Now after that I would have a better take on his heart but still I could not claim to know it.

Hell Matty, my number one fan!

Then your post is total bull!
Why's that, Matt?  For all you know, I'm a deeply racist, Black-American lesbian trying to pass myself off as a White, Anglo-Saxon, Protestant heterosexual.  Without seeing each other in the flesh we cannot 'know' that what is written is actually true.  I'm not the first alternative above, but I have the skills and techniques to make myself sound very different in my writing to what I really am.  This likely applies to everyone on this board.

We too easily forget that we are animals.
Forget? Some people don't even acknowledge the fact.
No, some don't because some of us believe that we are, as humans, more than a mere biological entity.  At the same time, I think most of us would also agree that, at least metaphorically, we are less than animals.

How can an animal be less than an animal?

Indeed, how can anything be? The scale of nature, which is what you're implying with this "less" nonsense, was rightly consigned to the dustbin of history a long, long time ago - didn't you know?

"It's just incomprehensible that human beings can be so evil to innocent, fellow human beings. What a mess of a species we are!"

Pity the twat didn't say the same about Blair and Bush, Guantanamo, Cameron and Sarkozy in Libya cheering the people on in their fight to democracy and how we are now working with Sisi in Egypt after backing the people there in their fight for democracy. We know who the real threats to our live are!!!

I think perhaps the mess is necessary for us to see the best of ourselves. When elements of humanity does its worst, the rest responds with acts of kindness, fortitude and love, large and small.

Of course it would be better if we could live from a place where we don't need the bad to push us into the good, but we don't seem to be capable of that. We seem to forget what we are capable of, we go to sleep.

Right. We become complacent...

If you don't know where you are starting from, how can you move forward with any sense of direction?

But you missed the context of my post; we go to sleep when things aren't so bad. We shouldn't need suffering to wake us up into the best we can be.
You need contrast to 'wake' one up. You can't create that, that comes from the vagaries of life.

Actually I think the problem is exactly the opposite.

Politicians are required to wear far too many hats!

Canada is not immune - it has had more than a few "incidents" of its own, not all Islami related, but it can not afford to be complaceent.

Yeah, but in the case of politicians it is the electorate that get the pain not the politicians.

That's because they never learn that the real threat to them is from their own politicians. See my #31

It seems a bit unfair just to single those four out from all the others.

Just to note in this case the General was positing that if the electorate decided against his view, it was wrong.

I think I know what you are saying - though I'm still pretty convinced you're smoking dope.

Perhaps I should have said our world leaders.

Be as convinced as you like - being told that one more cigarette (of any sort) will kill you tends to stop you smoking anything ever again! And damn quickly.
