1 degree Celsius
« on: November 20, 2015, 09:44:31 AM »
Hi everyone,

I believe that in 2015 we have almost reached an increase of 1 degree Celsius in global temperatures, which is half way to the danger mark of 2 degree Celsius.

October 2015 is said to be the hottest Oct on record.  Seven of the ten warmest months were in 2015.  In 50 years time the countries in the Persian Gulf will be too hot for human habitation (many of the people there will migrate to Britain I expect! ;)).

****************

Looks like Earth is already halfway to the danger zone.

Less than two weeks before a crucial global climate summit in Paris kicks off, NOAA, NASA and other global temperature monitors released data showing that the planet is halfway to two degrees of warming, the much publicized limit of "controllable" climate change.

Global data from NOAA released Thursday shows that the average temperature across the entire planet for the month of October was a record shattering 0.98 degrees Celsius (1.76 degrees Fahrenheit) warmer than average for the month of October -- making it the highest average temperature reached compared to normal in Earth's historical record.

The list of superlatives for the month is staggering:

-- the warmest October ever observed (in 136 years of NOAA records),

-- the warmest month ever compared to average (out of 1,630 months),

-- the sixth consecutive month breaking a global temperature record, and

-- seven of the 10 warmest months have occurred in 2015.

******************

What exactly will happen when we breach the 2 degree mark is not very clear however.

Cheers.

It feels like the ice age this morning. It is quite a shock after the very mild weather we have been experiencing for the time of year.

That's local weather not global climate, though (and I'm glad of it - it's practically winter, it's supposed to be cold).

This is not 'science'!! This is about global warming....something 'general' concerning everyone!

The effects concern everyone but the fact that we know about climate change at all is a scientific matter.

So what?! We are not discussing the science behind it here....we are discussing its effects on climate and humans.

Must agree - it is more about politics and current affairs, or should be.

We will breach the 2deg target, but it won't have any sudden effect. All we will notice is the increase in conflicts, migrations and "natural" disasters. Population increase will pick up again, with loss of some animal and plant species, and a raft of new diseases, or existing ones spreading wider.
Ah, but I was so much older then ... I'm younger than that now

I supose it will depend on how you define 'sudden effect' Ud.  If somewhere that has never suffered from flooding suddenly finds itself submerged, that might be deemed to be a sudden effect.

That sort of thing has always happened. Everywhere had a flood for the first time. We'll just see an increase in the frequency.

At some point people will realise that persistent flooding in the fens and the Somerset levels is the result of a deliberate secret policy of not maintaining and upgrading the drainage systems.  Then all hell will be let loose.
