Sugar is the new fat
« on: January 10, 2016, 09:15:23 AM »
Hi everyone,

New US guidelines say we should stay away from sugar...cholesterol and fat....not so bad after all!

http://us.cnn.com/2016/01/07/health/2015-dietary-guidelines/index.html

*************

The 2015 guidelines recommend a "healthy eating pattern" with limited sugar and saturated fat, less salt and more vegetables and whole grains.

1. Extract that sweet tooth

2. Dietary cholesterol not so bad.

3. Your mother was right about fruit and veggies

4. Fat is back, kind of

5. Eat less salt

6. Eat American, Mediterranean or vegetarian

besides few others.

**************

For information.

Cheers.

I have written about the Cholesterol Controversy and the myth of cholesterol link to heart disease many years back.

Here is a recent article on this.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4513492/

************

The cholesterol hypothesis links cholesterol intake and blood levels to cardiovascular disease. Because cholesterol is considered a risk factor for atherosclerosis many believe that lowering cholesterol in the blood is the best way to prevent CHD.

Reducing cholesterol blood levels by reducing dietary saturated fats is commonly recommended, but an exhaustive review and meta-analysis of 72 dietary studies concluded that reduced consumption of saturated fat does not reduce cardiovascular mortality.

Thus, the hypothesis that lowering cholesterol lowers mortality from CHD is not supported by many clinical research studies.

Early statin trials reported significant mortality benefits, yet serious concerns have been raised in some studies regarding biased results, premature trial terminations, under reporting of adverse events, high numbers of patients lost to follow-up and oversight by the pharmaceutical company sponsor.

Curiously, statin trials conducted after 2005 have failed to demonstrate a consistent mortality benefit[10].

Coronary heart disease is an extremely complex malady and the expectation that it could be prevented or eliminated by simply reducing cholesterol appears unfounded. After twenty years we should concede the anomalies of the cholesterol hypothesis and refocus our efforts on the proven benefits of a healthy lifestyle incorporating a Mediterranean diet to prevent CHD[2-4,41,42].

I came off statins, which I was taking for my very high familial cholesterol levels, as they were damaging my liver! Statins can do more harm than good!

My late father had high cholesterol levels, so do my three sisters and two of my daughters. My sisters refused to go on statins, two are retired nurses. One of my daughters has refused statins as well, I wish I had done so too now I realise the problems they can cause! >:(

I read that doctors also prescribe statins to thin the blood, but they also can prescribe rat poison( Warfarin). I sold a lot of Warfarin to people with mice infestations, when I ran an office for a pest control company in Edmonton.

Sugar is the old fat.  Everybody used to know that.

The fat scare was started by an American journalist arount 1970.  He knew nothing about nutrition, but he caught the Zeitgeist.

It was especially music to the ears of the corn syrup industry, which promoted it hard, because manufacturers reduced fat in their products by adding fructose instead.  So now they sell us low-fat yoghourt that is basically syrup with a bit of milk powder stirred in to make it white.  More calories than real yoghourt.

And of course we're fatter than ever.
