Fluffy is oot
« on: January 13, 2016, 01:46:47 PM »

I have always found David Mundell quite personable even though I disagree with his politics. I do wonder when we will be able to move on from the whole idea of 'coming out" though.

I think that the concept of 'coming out' is wider than just one of sexuality.  I've heard it used in reference to attitudes to methods of defence and other political matters; traditionally it was used in reference to young women debuting in society, etc.  Not sure that we'll easily get rid of the concept.
Are your, or your friends'/relatives', garages, lofts or sheds full of unused DIY gear, sewing/knitting machines or fabric and haberdashery stuff?

Hopefully he will find that most people will treat his sexuality as being a private matter that is none of their damn business.

Being straight isn't a private matter. Surely we are heading for a time when someone being gay is a non-story.

Yes it is. Your sexuality shouldn't make any difference to other aspects of your life. I'm a left hander and there was a time when lefties were treated with suspicion in much the same way as gay people are (although I doubt the consequences were never as bad, nobody ever got thrown off a building for being let handed). Being left handed has no impact on my life at all excepting some tools are awkward to use.

A lot of people are already in that place. I look forward to the day when I can claim I am more discriminated against that gay people.

That was pretty much my point, Jeremy. The idea that something should be 'private' suggests it has some kind of significance by which you could be judged. I think what we want to see is that sexuality is considered irrelevant.

I want to think that you're right.

I actually think that we're not as close to that happy day as we ought to be.

Agreed. Heading for it, yes. Close, no.

I think many of us are. The problem is that the ones who aren't shout loudest.
