Glasgow Pubs

Please excuse this indulgence but seeing as there are a few Glaswegians in here I thought I'd start this thread. 

I hail from sunny Paisley and although my heavy bevvy sessions are in the past, i have fond memories of my old Glasgow haunts.  Most are long gone but they include....

The Burns Howff, Dial Inn, Pot Still, The Amphora, Maggie, Blenheim, His Nibs, Griffin, Curlers, Aragon, Exchequer, Rubaiyat, Tennants, Outside Inn (at the back of the Kelvin Hall) and The Rock on Hyndland Road.

Out of town pubs included Sammy Dows, Jean Armour, Doune Castle at Shawlands.

That'll do for starters - there are plenty more.

Some of them are still around - in the mid 70's the Amphora was a favourite of mine, for the live music mainly, as was the Maggie. I think a band called Sneaky Pete were regulars at the Dial Inn.

Don't know the south-side pubs at all - back in the day it was Byres Road for me, with occasional ventures to Sauchiehall St.

The Byres Road pubs are still there I think, as it the Rock - next time I'm in the area I'll have a look.

Babbitys in town is worth a mention - several wise men are known to meet there.

Curlers, is that the one on Byres rd, my favourite haunt when I worked at the University.

Burns Howff, I got arrested on my 21st birthday outside that one.

Smeaky Pete were one of the pub bands that played the west coast area.  My faves were Paris but I also liked Chou Pahrot, Cochise and finally the Dead Skunk Band.

These bands played at places like the Dial Inn, Burns Howff in Glasgow and further afield we had the Heathery Bar (Wishaw), Victorian Carriage (Greenock), Abercorn and Bungalow Bar (Paisley), Golden Pheasant (Linwood) Royal Hotel (Largs).

Was often in the Maggie and Amphora circa 1975/76. Great days.

Dial Inn on a Saturday afternoon was a good session.  Also the Red Parrot (I think that was what it was called) on West Nile St.

And a St Mirren fan too.  Life is hard.

I fell foul of the bouncers at the Howff once.  Then later the same night I got chucked out of Clouds Disco upstairs atbthe Apollo.

Never went in there but I think it was on St Vincent Street.

Aye, me to, big F***** would not let me finish my pint at closing time, spent a nice night in Pitt st, the polis thought it was a funny way to celebrate my 21st, I did not appreciate their sense of humour
