There is life after death but doesn't mean Heaven
« on: May 19, 2016, 06:01:32 PM »
If this topic has been covered before, sorry, I never saw it.  Just found it on MSN and it seems to tie in with the 'Consciousness' thread, so I've put it here.

http://www.msn.com/en-gb/money/technology/scientists-have-finally-proven-that-there-is-life-after-death-but-we-might-not-be-going-to-heaven/ar-BBtef9I?li=BBoPWjQ&ocid=mailsignout

I find it most disturbing and think I would like to lie in state for a week before being embalmed, never worried about such things before.  Spooky.

Yes this study has been covered here many times already. This is real sloppy hack journalism, they don't even cite their sources, but it is referring to Sam Parnia's AWARE study of a few years back, which found that some degree of consciousness might persist for up to three minutes post cardiac arrest, interesting in itself but hardly warranting the exotic 'afterlife' tag, most people believing in afterlife would be looking for a lot more than three minutes.  We already understand death is not an instantaneous event, any more than birth is, it is a process.  Following oxygen and glucose starvation it takes around 5 minutes for a nerve cell to die, so three minutes of some level of consciousness post cardiac arrest is not that surprising.  This study has been a gift to hacks looking to shift copy with eye catching headlines though .....

Nothing new about that really. The idea of heaven and hell  was developed probably because of such experiences.

Not my words ippy, I was quoting the title of the article which makes a lot out of the fact that there is consciousness for a short while after organs stop working.  A bit alarmist really on first glance but not anything we don't already know.

I'll go with you on that much, there was an article in the "New Scientist" a while back about the conciousness of those in the French revolution that had just had their heads cut off and still seemed to be aware for a while, morbid yes but sort of interesting, provided you're not actually there.

Not a problem, Vlad: happens now and then.

I removed an awful lot of the letters you used, but I think in deciding how many to leave I managed to retain the sense of what you originally said!

Say what now?

Surely some mistake.

I wouldn't draw attention to that though Vlad.

It is a well-known fact that some blinked for up to 30 seconds after death to confirm their brain still conscious.
