Labours Shame

Piece on the BBC this morning. Between 1996 and 2006 house prices in the UK rose an average of 151% while wages rose 39%.

The end of the recession before last, it was a terrible time and I remember it only too well.  People were losing their jobs and their houses left, right and centre and those who hung on had negative equity.  Things certainly started to improve by the end of the nineties though so I don't think it's fair to blame Labour.

Are we talking about the Blair period?  Well, Blair was in thrall to neo-liberalism, and in fact, Thatcherism.  Hence, the selling of council houses continued, and the inability of councils to build more, was continued.   This inevitably led to shortages and price rises.

I benefitted financially from both of these situations , what does that say about me?

I don't begrudge anyone benefiting from council house sales, and rising prices.   I suppose the young may feel bitter, that property may be out of their reach, because of government inaction, and also action.   I don't know if Labour feel ashamed, but they did follow Thatcher in some ways.
