It seems a pity they are supposed to be shut down for so long. Surely the workmen could wear ear protectors if the noise the bongs make them a problem.

Why is it a pity? It's a nineteenth century bell on a wedding cake crumbling eduiface which should have been rebuilt 'fit for purpose' in the 1940's - but was deliberately rebuilt with a debating chamber too small for all entitled to be there to actually sit down, and uin a style recalling a fourteenth century chantry choir. In what way is theis whole farce of a pile in any way significant?

Think it would take more than ear defenders to protect anyone close up, the noise would make a whole body vibrate.

2021 isn't that far off, doubt anyone will miss the chimes that much & it will be a novelty when they are  back on. I love the look of Big Ben more than its chimes.

The first option when dealing with H & S is to remove the hazard not issue PPE. Also ear defenders wouldn't be sufficient as has been said. Surely its no grwat problem to not have the bongs for a few years. All this mourning the loss is way over the top.

I'm sure they thought of that and deemed it not sufficient, especially if it is desirable for the workmen to be able to talk to each other.

I'd put money on them having had interminable meetings, reports, discussions and memos about how they could minimise the bong loss. If you think they said "bugger the public and what they want, we'll just shut everything down because it is easiest", you are almost certainly wrong.

These particular bongs are really of great importance to the Beeb so they can be used to start the Six o'clock  news on Radio 4. If the Beeb wants to use contemporary sounds these are available in Nottingham. If the Beeb decides to use recordings then why not try using a cuckoo clock instead?

I understand that several Conservative MP's are upset there will be no more bongs at Westminster and some are upset that Big Ben will not ring for the next four years.
