I liked him greatly.

Despite appearances he was a troubled man - it was only a few years ago that he tried to kill himself.
Pain, or damage, don't end the world. Or despair, or fucking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man, and give some back. - Al Swearengen, Deadwood.

And his chain of restaurants is one that has always served me good food, and magnificent meringues. You are right that appearances are deceptive about people. Too often we think that someone laughing means they are happy with everything

"For the first time publicly, Carluccio was forced to admit his ongoing battle with depression.

'It was something I hadn't spoken about before, with colleagues – even friends, really," he says. "I didn't want the burden of people asking me what I, a successful man, had to be depressed about. And so I concealed my real feelings, and I survived by telling jokes. I wanted people to know that I was jolly. Because that's how people who didn't know me very well always thought of me: jolly'."

He talked a lot about porcini (ceps; boletus edulis). Never managed to find any here around Bristol, though I've seen other boletus species.
