Thinking Allowed Radio 4 13/12/17
« on: December 13, 2017, 04:55:43 PM »
Did anyone listen to Thinking Allowed just now? (4:0 - 4:30 p.m.) Radio 4? I thought it was a very good programme and have e-mailed them to say so.

If this is in the wrong place, could a mod please move it.

It was about religious education in schools with particular reference to faith schools. I didn't hear it all, but there was a woman much involved with SACRE and a man who, I think, was an Indian moslem, but I didn't check that.

With mod hat on (they are red with fairy lights), i suspect this might fit better on T&A but what was it that you thought made it a good programme?

Well, I suppose it was because the woman spoke so sensibly about how SACRE should have a stronger voice, also about the backwardness of separating girls from boys, almost always in the way of making them inferior. So, yes, a biased view, I suppose!

Isn't SACRE an example of privileging religion, no matter how well a representative of them talks?

Don't  some studies show single sex schools work better for girls?

Apologies for delay in replying - I tried yesterday and the day before, but when I tried to post, it came up with the dreaded 'this page can't be displayed; screen.

right, I'll have another go - I kept a copy!

As far as I know from the Humanists, one of the  main things they had difficulty with was getting someone on to the SACRE so that the voice of non-belief could be heard. I don't know what the situation is now, but it was definitely not good some years ago.

Probably, but  if a particular faith is taught, then I don't see how that would be better.
