The more thus story has seen used by Tories, including as Andrew Neil points out here by the defence and security ministers, the more my already low opinion of this govt has sunk.

During the election, I wondered if this tactic backfires, as Corbyn looks tough and resilient, against the right wing smears. And the smearers look shifty.

Just to note that Steve, the walking shite stain, Baker's position is that if there is no real evidence then you can accuse someone of anything and it's not to be condemned. So if Ben Wallace thinks Corbyn is like Kim Philby and the puking poodle thinks he can't condemn that, then he must think it would be fine if someone were to say Steve Baker is like Barry Bennell.

As you know I am no fan of Jeremy Corbyn, but I can't see how this is going to work. The point being that the notion that he is from the extreme left and hung out with people that some find unsavoury is already factored in.

And for many people what happened in the communist era is so ancient history as to be completely irrelevant. Likewise in the election campaign when there was all the focus on him meeting Gerry Adams and Martin McGuinness - I suspect many people will have looked at that, looked at the peace settlement in NI and the leading democratic positions held by Adams and before his death, by McGuinness and think 'well of course he did - as did many others, jaw-jaw of that type was what was necessary to stop the killing'.

I agree with Prof D that many people will look at Corbyn's involvement in NI as part of the process that moved NI to the democratic process, and aren't by ng the terrorist friends support but I also think many of those would not support him if the allegations of actually being on the payroll of a Communist state for spying.

Possibly true - but I don't think many people would bat an eyelid at close ties between Corbyn and other hard left Labour figures in the 1970s and 80s and senior figures in communist regimes in eastern europe and elsewhere.

I partially agree, Czechoslovakia does not exist anymore & means no more to todays kids than East Prussia meant to us. If it had been Russian spies then yes.

True although I'm not really sure the money is the point. Actually I think people might be even more concerned were Corbyn to have passed over secrets out of pure ideology rather than for monetary gain.

We are talking about a different world. It is worth noting that nobody seems to want to remember Joan Maynard, the right wing press slagged her as "Stalin's Granny", but most people in the Labour & trade union movement in the seventies considered her as an eccentric aunt.

But then the lack of historical knowledge just means that you plaster Communist on the smear, and it becomes just one of the bad guys. It does have a vaguely 50s feel to the whole thing but were I to know that he had taken money, it would affect my thoughts and likelihood of voting Labour with him in charge.

All that said, that should not take away from the fact that this atrocity of shearing by the govt with no evidence is even for this collection of wankers disgusting

I don't disagree though I would be amazed to know what secrets they could have been. The money issue works two ways. Were it true then it's an easy piece of evidence that might remain. And for some on the far far left taking money for this would be a betrayal.

FWIW (one vote) what concerns me is not Corbyn, but Militant Tendency/RSL and their latest front "Momentum".

The Tory Party exists so as to be in power. They survived 1997, 2001, and 2005. They will receive a thrashing next time, but they will be back again after that unless the voting system is changed.
