I have seen it said that religion and religious things are metaphors. Metaphors for what?

It's a puzzler right enough: my guess is either irrational superstitious beliefs and associated dogma/rituals or maybe underwater ballet dancing (though I suppose I could be wrong).

God is simply  Dog backwards . Does that help?
