Technically he is the first pilot to fly supersonic in a controlled way. Other planes of the period could probably get supersonic in a dive, but, if you were the unfortunate pilot of such a plane, it was career limiting.

I heard on the radio today that Chuck is in the film about breaking the sound barrier and he's the barman, or (American English, Bar tender), take your pick.

I think the film dates from somewhere in the late fifties to the early sixties.
