It is so very sad that some people resort to alcohol and drug abuse when unhappy for whatever reason. :o

I am so very fortunate that when I did drink alcohol it was always in strict moderation, and I have never taken any illegal drugs in my life.

Illegality doesn't really mean much in the context of drugs.

As is often pointed out if alcohol was a new drug just introduced it would be a Class A drug. So I don't think any of us have an excuse to pat ourselves on the back (unless someone is teetotal, in which case pat away).

Tobacco though heavily regulated is still a legal drug but is arguably more addictive than other illegal drugs. Although addiction is but one component when considering the complexities of drugs and how to legislate in this area.
