Hi everyone,

Tomorrow and the day after are celebrated as Deepavali (meaning- Row of lights) by Hindus in India. Also called Diwali for short. 

We light lamps, fire crackers, eat lots of sweets and other goodies, wear new clothes, socialize, exchange gifts and generally celebrate.  Traditionally, we celebrate about 42 festivals among Hindus through out the year.....some celebrated more in some regions and less in other regions.  Deepavali is the biggest and celebrated uniformly throughout the country.

There are many mythological stories associated with the festival. It is believed to be the day Lord Rama returned to his kingdom with his wife Sita after killing the demon Ravana.  Some celebrate it as the day that Krishna killed the demon Narakasura. Some celebrate it as Lakshmi Puja (prayer to the Goddess of wealth and prosperity).

Regardless of the reason...its a time for celebration, being positive, happy and together.

3 am last night - still awake - fireworks started in the gardens of two houses on one side of us and three on the ither an two backing on to us as soon as it got dark - about 5 pm.

They finally exhausted the entire worlds's production of fire works ay 4.15 am!

The makers of headache pills must be absolutely chuffed.

It's going to be bonkers as usual in Leicester, one of the (and possibly the) largest Diwali celebrations outside of India.

My tiny village nevertheless had its Diwali fireworks going off last night.  :)

Happy Deepavali for tomorrow, Sriram, as I won't be on the forum. I shall be heading along the motorway this evening to spend a few days grandchild-minding, and there are no fancy 'phones round 'ere to access the internet.... which actually is quite good.

Do you not think it's more likely that that was the last few stragglers from Bonfire Night?  :D
