In theory I don't care if Tesco sponsor my local police so long as they are around to stop old ladies getting mugged. But the problem is that sooner or later police will need to investigate a 'major sponsor' for fraud or manslaughter due to negligence or something, and impartiality will be compromised.

So it ain't gonna happen.

Really!

Must be my age but is nothing sacred, what next, doctors walking about with billboards advertising the latest pharmaceutical.

The first thing that happens when you get pregnant is that your doctor or midwife gives you a pack to keep your notes in. Three quarters of the material in it is advertising and free samples. Throughout the pregnancy you get 'Bounty Packs' - ditto. Then when you are in hospital you are pestered to sign up with the 'Bounty Lady' and go home with a carrier bag full of chemical- laden crap that no-one in the right minds would let near a newborn.

The police are well behind the game.

In my GP's waiting room there are loads of information leaflets on managing problems from dermatitis to arthritis. Just about all of them are provided by a manufacturer of treatments of one kind or another, many of them available OTC.

Tesco could sponsor the police the way the rest of us sponsor the police.......through taxation.
