Gravitational waves?!
« on: February 11, 2016, 08:52:16 AM »
Hi everyone,

Here is a CNN article about possible discovery of Gravitational waves.

http://edition.cnn.com/2016/02/10/us/gravitational-waves-announcement-feat/?iid=ob_homepage_deskrecommended_pool&iref=obnetwork

***************

On Thursday, scientists are expected to declare they have detected gravitational waves. Not only will such a discovery support a prediction that's essential to Albert Einstein's general theory of relativity, but it will also add to our understanding of the universe, said Szabolcs Marka, a physics professor at Columbia University.

"The discovery of gravitational waves is, I think, the most important breakthrough in modern science," said Marka, leader of the Columbia Experimental Gravity Group, a member of LIGO, the Advanced Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory.

"We will be able to study not just Einstein's general relativity -- we'll be able to find objects we only imagined would exist.

LIGO is described in a statement as"two identical detectors carefully constructed to detect incredibly tiny vibrations from passing gravitational waves," one located in Louisiana, the other in Washington State.

Marka said to think of it as a "cosmic microphone," an incredibly precise listening device that can detect distortions in space-time, the fabric of the universe. It's so precise it can detect changes the size of a soccer ball in the entire Milky Way galaxy.

Indeed, black holes are a holy grail of the gravitational wave concept. To date, we've been able only to see their aftereffects -- black holes themselves remain a conjecture. Discovery of gravitational waves would confirm their existence.

Ironically, Einstein -- who suggested some of these concepts -- didn't think gravitational waves would be discovered.

"He thought gravitational waves are a beautiful construct, but they are so small nobody would ever be able to actually measure it," said Marka.

**************

Cheers.

Will their discovery add weight to the theory?

Hope not, as it is already heavy going. Still, looking forward to swimming in space :)

The opportunity here is to finally establish that atheism equals science since theoretically all atheists should give out a little groan simultaneously whenever a gravity wave passes.

Not at all, Vlad - I'd just wave back (which is the polite thing to do).

According to quantum mechanics it is possible for Dawkin's The God Delusion to spontaneously disappear from the popular science section at Waterstone's where it doesn't belong and reappear in The bargain bucket at The Age UK shop where..........

Could this be a proof for your version of quantum mechanics, Vlad? 'Cos Age UK is exactly where I got my copy from!  :D

what are the chances of that then?

Here we have an explicitly science thread on the science and technology board and the usual suspect (Vlad) is trying to turn it into an anti-atheist discussion. I wouldn't comment on it, but he's trying to do the same on the NHS thread too.

Can one of the mods please tell him to put a sock in it.

Hi everyone,

Here is a CNN article about possible discovery of Gravitational waves.

It looks like we may be able to drop "possible".

http://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-35523676

It's ironic that this is more evidence that Einstein was right and yet we already know that the General Theory of Relativity is "wrong" on account of it not being a quantum theory.

Yes... gravitational waves have been detected and an announcement has been made. That's good.

About your second point...maybe QM is wrong because it is not Relativity!  ;)

Actually both QM and Relativity could be correct though we don't know how exactly they both fit together. The world is so complex and our logic is so limited that many aspects of reality could seem at odds with one another while still being real.

Spirituality and materialism are a case in point.....but let that point not hijack this thread away from Gravitational waves.

Why didn't the gravitational wave affect the laser beam?

In addition to being gravitational wave detectors, these machines must also be the worlds most sensitive seismographs - so how the hell do they separate the signals they are looking for from the constant shudders and groans from the Earth?

A friend was telling me just now that, apparently, the man who invented the laser machine detector has dementia and therefore does not know about the latest news. that is really sad.

That's right. It was one of my blaster farts that actually did it.

Sorry guys!!!  :-[
