Music and dancing are of the devil
« on: June 16, 2016, 10:08:57 PM »
Just lately the whole world seems to have gone potty.

I know some Muslims think music, which can create spiritual feelings should be reserved for serious religious occasions, but this is ridiculous.

We don't know who produced the leaflets, Rose.  Extremist stuff but I can't imagine the school would have been involved in that, they have their reputation to consider.  Might have been a youngster, being bolshie.  We may never know.

I found the article interesting because there is a Darul Uloom school near where I live and, unlike the Birmingham school in the article, it is highly regarded from an academic point of view.  Their website is under construction at the moment so I can't post pictures but I found this:
http://www.educationbase.co.uk/Darul-Uloom-London-Islamic-School-Chislehurst,CC1802

and a Daily Mail (yeah I know, whatever) article which I found interesting, being local to the school:
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1288053/Inside-Muslim-Eton-Their-day-starts-3-45am-goes-disciplined-20-hours-Their-aim-produce-Muslim-elite-leaders-.html

They don't do music or theatre studies or go on theatre trips and whilst they do share some activities with other local schools, that doesn't include the performing arts.  There is also a St Trinians type boarding school in their vicinity and I have no idea if they have involvement with them  :D :D

The attitude towards music is an odd one but as you say, not all Muslims feel the same way.  When my son was at school he had Muslim friends who did piano, violin etc, and took part in plays.  Danced at parties.

I went to a Muslim wedding reception once where there was a band.  It was only drum, different types of drum but extremely effective.

I doubt I'll see any Darul Uloom boys at 'Chislehurst Rocks' tomorrow.

Don't recall anything in the Quran saying keep away from performing arts.
NOW The Hadith or sayings of the 'prophet' is another matter & many muslims say they aren't reliable !?!?!??

That's probably why they differ on this issue trippy.  It's not a basic issue and we have our own Yusuf Islam formerly known as Cat Stevens to prove it.

Quite.
It's only a big issue to a minority.  Fair enough, they can do without music if that is their wont.
Orthodox Jews don't believe in dancing except for traditional dance that the men do together - no women involved.  They say, "You won't see an Orthodox ballerina".

I heard the women do dance but behind a screen so the men don't see them.

You do.  I dread to think what your scale is.  Why not play another tune, you might find you like it.

Very sad indeed Rhiannon.  Poor soul, and his family.

All these Islamic ideas like  banning music, harsh sharia laws & terrorism and other extreme ideas seems to have its roots in Wahhabism

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/03/29/what-is-wahhabism-the-reactionary-branch-of-islam-said-to-be-the/

Not all Muslims are into that sort of Islam.

Lots of religions go through these kinds of repressive phases. Eg. what about English Puritanism?
Ah, but I was so much older then ... I'm younger than that now

That's very true Udayana, people often forget how austere religion used to be in our own world, affecting not only worship but how people dressed etc.

Yes you are right, all the religions seem to have repressive groups.

Even the Catholic Church has its own repressive sects.
