The pain of a dog dying

It seems to me too easy to judge here both from a dog lovers viewpoint and from the viewpoint of someone who 'doesn't get' pet ownership.

We have had a number of dogs in the past, but I can't say their deaths were more than a minor regret.

It hurts like hell when you loose a dog, I would be extremely concerned about any dog owner that conveyed, 'so what it's only a dog', on loosing a dog.

We ensured all our many animals were treated humanely, but animals of other species should not be treated like humans.

No. Animals are generally deserving of better.

My dog saved my sanity. He is a constant big furry bear to hug, endlessly patient, uncomplaining. He keeps me safe when I've felt threatened. I've spent countless sleepless nights on the sofa with his soft head in my lap, making the moment ok.

He means the world to me.

My words on this still stand for myself and certainly reflect the feelings of my fellow dog owners here, I couldn't and don't understand anyone that has had a long relationship with a dog without shedding many a tear when they go.

We all see things differently. Animals should not be ill-treated, I have contacted the RSPCA several times over the years when I had reason to believe someone was abusing their dog/cat. However, I could never get attached to an animal as one would to a human.

I'm surprised Floo, while I can appreciate a. dog is only a pet and I certainly wouldn't put them before their owners or most other humans but I have to admit your stance sounds a bit on the cold side to me.

You really have surprised me Floo.

People who do not understand the relationship some people have towards their dogs should Watch the Lori Anderson film HEART OF A DOG. Trailer attached.

It is a sort of "philosophical" film where she tells her life story and comments on the meaning of life using her dog Lula-belle as a metaphor. It is incredibly moving and full of beauty. "The purpose of death is the relief of love".

My dog became one of the family, so yes I was upset. After all you have got used to each other's funny little ways over the last 14 years or so.

We have another dog now, and he too is part of our family, but he has never replaced our old dog because he is so different in many ways. Different, but very lovable.

It's so sad,  that you spend years forging a special relationship, and they only live about 14years.

The closer you get, the harder it becomes.

It's not really about treating the dog like a human, but he becomes such a part of you.

When they die, there is this hole.

You miss walking with them, you hear them rattle the door to go out, there is no one to greet you with a wagging tail when you return.

Sometimes, you can love a dog, more than some people.
