The 10 grand train ticket....
« on: April 24, 2017, 11:47:50 PM »
Does it take you round the world? No. Does it take you half way round the world? No. Does it at least get you to the continent? No. It gets you from Taunton to Trowbridge but not via Bristol

My grandson (15), who is train mad, can travel first class from time to time, perfectly legitimately, on a cheap ticket it if it booked well in advance.

Yes, if you are booking well in advance, it's always worth looking at the first class prices because you can sometimes get really good deals on them.

Another trick is, if travelling at the weekend on some lines, you can get a weekend first class upgrade which is substantially cheaper than just buying a first class ticket. For instance, at the weekend from Reading to London on GWR, a first class upgrade costs £7.50 (each way) on top of a ticket price of around £19 and you only have to pay it if the train manager comes through first class checking tickets.
