I suppose though he has 'retired' before and there isn't much left for him to do.  Good, as opposed to Hollywood roles, must be rarer for him.

Tbh I generally found him more an actor to admire rather than anything else. There seems often a performance as well as acting.

This is very true - in fact I seem to recall that a few years back he gave up acting and went off to be a cobbler in the middle of nowhere in Italy.

True in some cases - There Will Be Blood for example. But he was astonishing as Abraham Lincoln, and My Left Foot is a once-in-a-lifetime performance in anybody's book, surely

Gangs of New York was another where I felt the performance, also Last of the Mohicans. But I'm being picky, I agree about Lincoln and My Left Foot, and I will remember watching My Beautiful Launderette fairly close to Room With a View and being stunned it was the same actor.
